Southern Californian SATURDAY ... NOV. 30, 1872 LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. The Thanksgiving Ball. The ball given last Thursday evening, at Enterprise Hall, was a most happy affair throughout, and was heartily enjoyed by a large and brilliant assemblage of ladies and gentlemen. The youth and beauty of the town were not alone in attendance, but many of our first citizens of mature years lent the additional charm of their genial presence to the general enjoyment of the evening. The arrangements for the comfort of guests seemed well made throughout; the weather was fine, the music good, and supper such as to add a fresh laurel to the already high reputation of the "Challenge." The hall, with its full complement of merry-makers, presented a pleasing sight. It is but just to our ladies to say that they dress with exceeding good taste, and a sensible avoidance of that "loudness" of color and style which too often prevails in ball-rooms, and detracts from the natural grace and loveliness of woman. Two charming young ladies, Miss Weil and Miss Hecht, were in attendance from the far-off city of Baltimore. Their dress, which was alike, and was generally admired for its beauty and simplicity, was of white, with ornaments of gold and A Free Lunch. We are very well aware that respectable Anaheimers are not habitual free-lunchers, and, as a general thing, would scorn an invitation to partake of hash that was not duly paid for. There are, however, exceptions to the best of rules, and the little affair coming off at the Anaheim Hotel, this evening, is one of these. Our young friend, Mr. Max Nebelung, the new proprietor of this elegant house, will make his maiden effort in the noble art of hotel-keeping, and desires to make the occasion a pleasant one by a general gathering of his friends. He will have a fine lunch spread and we hope that all who wish him success in his new enterprise may be on hand to give him their blessing. New Music. All among the Roses is an extravagant regro melody. printed with a beautifully illuminated title-page; price 40 cents; words and music by W. H. Delehanty. I'm Waiting, my Darling, for Thee, with brilliant variations and finale, by Chas. Grobe; price 60 cts. For the above we are indebted to M. Gray, publisher, San Francisco, who is also agent for Steinway & Sons' and other pianos, and Burdett's organs. Personals. Most of our citizens remember with pleasure Mr. Alonzo Coona. exceeding good taste, and a sensible avoidance of that "loudness" of color and style which too often prevails in ball-rooms, and detracts from the natural grace and loveliness of Woman. Two charming young ladies, Miss Weil and Miss Hecht, were in attendance from the far-off city of Baltimore. Their dress, which was alike, and was generally admired for its beauty and simplicity, was of white, with ornaments of gold and pearl, with roses and orange blossoms. Following is, we believe, a complete list of those in attendance: LADIES. Alonzo Coons formerly telegraph agent here, and now occupying a similar position at Bakersfield. Mr C. is a genial and courteous gentleman and we are glad to see by mention of him in the Havilah Miner that he apears to be thriving, having lately opened a store in addition to his telegraph business. We wish him success. Auction Sale—of a Horse. William Hartmann will sell a public auction, at 3 o'clock this afternoon, in front of S. "Yes," said he, his mind evidently running on something else, "nice toddy." Fly Poison.—Little Manna Schmidt, 6 years old, son of Mrs T E Schmidt, was very nearly "done for" on Thursday last by eating some liquid left on a plate to poison flies, and which the youth mistook for molasses. It fortunately made him sick at the stomrach and he vomited it up. He gives molasses a wide berth now. Only about $1,100 taxes was collected by Under Sheriff Johnston, on his late visit here.
