LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
The "Southern California Semi-Tropical Fruit Co."—They buy land and locate at Anaheim.
Many of our readers have doubtless heard of an association called "The Southern California Semi-Tropical Fruit Co." which was organized at Healdsburg, Sonoma Co., July 20th, 1872, for the purpose of cultivating semi-tropical fruits and nuts in Southern California. The company have ever since its organization been investigating the relative merits of various portions of our Southern counties for the purpose of deciding intelligently upon some locality which should prove most conducive to the objects of their enterprise. It was at first intended to locate at Riverside, in San Bernardino Co., but before any definite steps were taken Mr. R H. Gilman, Superintendent of the Co. was sent on a tour of observation, and in that capacity has travelled extensively, during the last six weeks, through San Bernardino and Los Angeles Counties, and has at length we are happy to say settled upon Anaheim as the most desirable spot in all respects which he has been able to find. He has purchased for this Co. a fine tract of land.

A PUBLIC.
A woman was walking, and a man looked at her and followed her. The woman said, "Why do you look at me?" He answered, "Because I have fallen in love with you." The woman said, "Why are you in love with me? My sister is much handsomer. She is coming after me; go and make love to her!" The man turned back and saw a woman with an ugly face. Being greatly displeased he went again to the other woman and said "Why did you tell me a falsehood? The woman answered "Neither did you speak the truth; for if you were in love with me, why did you go after another woman?"
VOTE OF CALIFORNIA.
The latest estimate of the result of the election in California gives Grant and Wilson over thirteen thousand majority. In this statement some counties have been included whose returns are not complete, and the figures will be somewhat modified when the official vote is received; but it is believed that the general
He has purchased for this Co. a fine tract of 160 acres of land (from the Land Co.) situated 24 miles northwest of town, and adjoining the land of Mr Olden, on the west. Mr G. will erect a dwelling and begin operations at once. It is the intention of the Co. to put out during the coming season a large nursery of orange, lemon, lime and other trees.
Mr L N Chapman, a stockholder of the Co. also accompanied Mr. G. in his visit. These gentlemen came here with preconceived opinions, unfavorable to Anaheim, thinking that the climate was too cold, etc., for their purpose, but after seeing for themselves, and giving the matter a fair consideration they come to the sensible conclusion that this is the very best place they can stop. We think they have made a wise decision. Very little attention has ever been paid here to the class of fruits which the Co. proposes to cultivate, because the original settlers came here on purpose to cultivate grapes and make wine; and this object has been consistently kept in view ever since. But in a few instances, oranges and olives have been put out and have done exceedingly well, growing almost without care and producing the very finest fruit. One tree on Mr Watson's place, 4 miles southeast of town is estimated to have borne this year the enormous number of 5,000 oranges, worth $150,000. There is also on the same track the largest and first olive tree we have seen, and at the time of our visit perfectly loaded with fruit. Lemons are grown plentifully by all our vines yardists. We welcome this new accession to our ranks and predict for them a prosperous future.
COLLECTING TAXES.—Under Sheriff
Vote of California.
The latest estimate of the result of the election in California gives Grant and Wilson over thirteen thousand majority. In this statement some counties have been included whose returns are not complete, and the figures will be somewhat modified when the official vote is received; but it is believed that the general result, as officially ascertained, will vary but little from the majority above stated.
The San Francisco Chronicle, in an article on the imprisonment of the Brotherton forgers, says:
They possess a secret in the art of erasing writing without leaving a trace of their work that is said to be known to them alone: but should it ever become the property of the community at large, it is safe to say that it would necessitate a resolution in our modes of conducting business. No legal instruments could be made binding were it possible to erase any part of them and substitute whatever might be convenient. Contracts, wills, deeds, would lose the efficacy. And in financial and business transactions the letter of credit, the bank check, the bill of exchange, add the promissory note would be merely so much waste paper. Inventive minds might have to labor for generations in search of some fitting substitute for the written instrument or some check against the art of altering it. This art the Brothertons possess, and it lay in their power to reduce merchants, bankers or brokers from wealth to stark poverty in a single day. This power they have used, too, to marked purpose.
A Good Chimney.—The Scientific American gives the following hints to those who would "build a chimney that would not smoke." The chief point is to make the throat not less than four inches broad and 12 long; then the chimney should be abruptly enlarged to double the size and so continue for one foot or more; then it may be gradually tapered off as desired.
A Good Paper.—Our Fireside Friend is one of the best family paper we know of. In the issue of Nov. 16 which has just reached
Collecting Taxes.—Under Sheriff Albert Johnston arrived in town yesterday on his round of tax collecting and will remain over to day for the same purpose. Those who chose can now save themselves the trouble and expense of a trip to Los Angeles, by calling on Mr. J. at Justice Kohler's office. The taxes will not become delinquent until the last of December. Mr. J. informs us that the people generally are not paying up now, but put it off to a later day. To-day will be the last chance of paying without going to the county-seat.
Back Again.—We invite attention to the announcement of Mr. Peter Richards. Mr R was formerly the popular proprietor of the Enterprise Saloon and now he has resumed the management of the same, and invites all his old friends to come and see him.
Always Successful.—While others of ten fail, Mr A. E. Putney almost invariably succeeds in finding a good artesian stream the first trial, without extra expense to his employers. This is partly owing to his long experience and peculiar knowledge of the business and also the superior power of his boring tools which nables him to go through strata that are impenetrable to others. His address is Anaheim.
A Good Paper.—Our Fireside Friend is one of the best family paper we know of. In the issue of Nov. 16 which has just reached us, is commenced a new story on one the most interesting and absorbing topics of the present time, African adventure.
It is entitled "Wrecked on the Coast, or with Livingstone and Stanley." Published weekly by Waters & Co., Chicago, at $3 per year.
School Examination — The Richland public school, taught by Mr McPherson, of Westminster, held its first examination yesterday. We were, unfortunately, not able to be present, but we learn that a large number of visitors attended, and that the occasion passed off in a manner creditable alike to the diligence of the pupils and the fidelity of their teacher. The school numbered 42 scholars.

Beverage Man., July 19, 1889.
Dr. RADWAY: I have had Overton Tumor in the upper jaw and browls. All the Doctors said "there was no help for it." I tried everything that was recommended; but nothing helped me. I saw your resident and thought I would try it; but had no faith in it because I had suffered for twelve years. I took six bottles of the Hemorrhoid Kills and one bottle of Radway's Pills and two bottles of your Doctor's Kills and I felt better, smarter, and happier than I have for twelve years. The worst tumor was in the left side of the bowels over the groin. I write this to you for the benefit of them. You can publish it if you choose.
