Southern Californian SATURDAY OCT. 12, 1872 LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. GREELEY & BROWN. BIG MEETING THURSDAY EVENING!! Twelve new members—Eloquent Addresser—Handles Anvil salutes—Ladies—Music—&c. The largest political meeting of the season was held last Thursday evening by the Greeley & Brown club, to hear the speaking by Dr. J. C. Shorb and Gov. Jno G. Downey. The latter was unfortunately unable to be present, but the former was promptly on hand and had a fine audience to address. About 200 people were present. Bonfires were lighted, anvils fired, and an immense hanging banner with the inscription "Democratic Head-Quarters, Greeley and Brown Club" stretched clear across the street. The audience was first briefly addressed by Judge Evey, after which Dr. J. Campbell Shorb, of San Francisco, late a surgeon in the U. S. Army, appeared upon the stand and was introduced to the audience. His speech was a brilliant effort, and elicited frequent and prolonged applause. He referred particularly to the San Domingo affair, and the great financial panic of New York known as the "Black Friday" horror; related some good stories, gave a most graphic illustration of the Arizona "peace rally." Greeley & Brown Club—Business Meeting. Meeting called to order by Prest Evey. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. The Sec'y as a committee of one appointed last meeting to confer with the County Committee, rendered his report. A communication from Wm. M. Meffadden Esq., defining his political views and endorsing the platform and nominees of the Baltimore Convention, was received, read and placed on file. A letter from Hon. Jno G. Downey acknowledging an invitation to address the club, and regretting that business matters made it impossible for him to be present, was received and placed on file. On motion ordered that notice be given in the Southern California that at the next meeting of the club, on the 17th inst., nomination will be made for the offices of Water-Overseer and Water Commissioners, and a full attendance of members requested. The following new members were added to the club: Wm. M Richter, Peter Doucelance, G M Teel, L M Morrill, J B Raine, A H McDowell, A C Mankins, Geo Yung, Isaac Hicky, Oscar George, James T Smith and George Axtel, making a total of 111 voters to date. Irs. Parker's Speech. geon in the U. S. Army, appeared upon the stand and was introduced to the audience. His speech was a brilliant effort, and elicited frequent and prolonged applause. He referred particularly to the San Domingo affair, and the great financial panic of New York known as the "Black Friday" horror; related some good stories, gave a most graphic illustration of the Arizona "peace policy" of the administration, and paid a glowing tribute to the memory of Lincoln. After the speeches, the Doctor was serenaded at the Anaheim Hotel, and congratulations and interchanges of social sentiment were kept up until a late hour. Henry Bremermann has returned from the Hot Springs, "Mimself again." The manner in which his hotel has been conducted is known to all Anaheim and the outside world. He is, and may well be proud of it. He has re-assumed the management of his own bar, and anybody complaining will find that he retails all modern remidies. Look out for that splendid lunch which will be spread this evening, and every evening. All are invited. The Tax Levy.—The Board of Supervisors have fixed the tax levy of the present fiscal year as follows: For State, 50 cents; for county 25 cents; for school, 25 cents; for hospital, 3 cents; for road, 10 cents; for jail, 6 cents; for salary, 39 cents; interest and sinking fund, 1861, 15 cents; do. of 1864, 5 cents; do. of 1869, 15 cents; do. of 1871, 5 cents; gopher and squirrel fund, 1 cent. Total tax levy, $190.—Star. Speaking at Los Angeles.—A grand Greeley demonstration is to be made at Los Angeles this evening. Speaking will be had in front of the Beila Union Hotel, where Dr. J. C. Shorb, Jno. R. McConnell Esq., Col. C. D. Bicknell and C. N Wilson Esq., will address the assembled masses. VINES AND TREES.—Those who are going to start orchards or vineyards the coming winter will do well to apply to Mr. Clark. He gets cuttings from the best stocks of the old vineyards of Napa Co., and knows the varieties to be just what he represents them. GRANT MEETING THIS EVENING.—Republicans will remember the following new members were added to the club: Wa M Richter, Peter Doncelance, G M Teel, L M Morrill, J B Baine, A H IcDowell, A C Mankins, Geo Yung, Isaac Hicky, Oscar George, James T Smith and George Axtel, making a total of 111 voters to date. Irs. Parker's Speech. A large audience was attracted to Enterprise Hall last Wednesday eve'g by the novelty of hearing a woman make a political speech. Mrs. Parker delivered an address of about an hour's length, making a very clever review of the political situation, and giving Mr. Greeley credit for some of the noblest qualities of humanity, viz: for being a kind father and a loving husband. The club changed its night of meeting back to Saturday; the evening originally selected. Messra Jao. Fischer. A. J. Brown and President Guinn were constituted a committee to receive Messrs Swift and Eastman, on Saturday, and provide for their entertainment here. Wood's Household Magazine is a neat looking periodical which reaches us from Newburgh, N. Y. It is published monthly at the cheap price of $1 per year, and has the attraction of Gail Hamilton on its editorial staff. The present number contains "Love Labor Not Lost" by Gail Hamilton, "An Adventure," by J. T. Headly; "Poor Blennerbasselt," by James Parton, and several other articles. LAND TO LEASE.—See announcement of Mr. Miles. He has a large tract, convenient to town, to be let on easy terms. CHANGE OF NIGHT.—The Grant & Wilson Club meet bereafter on Saturdays instead of Wednesday, evenings. Geo. B. McClellan.—It is stated that Geo. B. McClellan is coming to Anaheim, for the purpose of seeing the fine painting always to be found at Payne Bros. How a President is Elected. VINES AND TREES.—Those who are going to start orchards or vineyards the coming winter will do well to apply to Mr. Clark. He gets cuttings from the best stocks of the old vineyards of Napa Co., and knows the varieties to be just what he represents them. GRANT MEETING THIS EVENING.—Republicans will remember the speakers announced for this evening at Enterprise Hall, Hon's J. F. Swift and John G. Eastman of San Francisco. The hall will be seated throughout, so that all may be comfortable. FIRE AT GALLATIN.—We learn from yesterday's Star that a disastrous fire occurred at Gallatin last Wednesday, burning the stores of W.W. Standefer & Co and Frankel Bros, including the Post office and Telegraph office. DEATH OF JAS. W. COVFROTH.—The telegraph announces that this distinguished lawyer and public speaker fell dead at the breakfast table at Sacramento, 9th inst. THAT BEATS US.—The Alameda County Gazette tells of bunches of grapes, raised in Mr. Roder's vineyard, near Napa City, weighing thirteen pounds each. ILLUMINA OF MRS. CLARK.—We regret to say that Mrs Miriam Clark, wife of John W. Clark Esq. is quite ill from a neuralgie attack. Bar Peter Cartwright, the celebrated Methodist pioneer preacher, died at his home in Pleasant Plains, Ill., on Thursday, September 26th, aged 87 years. CHANGE OF NIGHT.—The Grant & Wilson Club meet hereafter on Saturday instead of Wednesday, evenings. GEO. B. McClellan.—It is stated that Geo. B. McClellan is coming to Anaheim, for the purpose of seeing the fine painting always to be found at Payne Bros. HOW A PRESIDENT IS ELECTED. Not all of our readers, perhaps understand the mode by which the President of the United States is elected, as we not unfrequently hear inquiries on the subject. Briefly stated, the plan is as follows: Each State is entitled to as many electors for President and Vice-President as it has Senators and Representatives in Congress. In each State the electors are chosen by a plurality vote. That is if there are three sets of electors voted for, those having the highest number of votes are chosen. But a candidate for President; in order to be successful, must have a majority of all the electors. If there be three candidates for President and none of them receive a majority of the electoral College, there is no choice; and the election then goes to the house of representatives. The House must confine their choice to the three highest candidates voted for by the electors. The representatives vote by States and each State has but one vote, so that the power of Delaware is as great as New York. A candidate to be successful, must receive a majority of all the States, or nineteen States. If the delegation is divided, the vote of the State cannot be cast, and therefore is lost. Card from W. M. McFadden, Esq. Ed. South's Cat'n.—Dear Sir—I saw in Monday's issue of L. A. Star that I had been charged with accusing M. O. Boyle, before the Central Committee, of being a Republican. I have known Mr Boyle for three years and during that time he has been an uncompromising Democrat. I write this in justice to myself, as well as to Mr Boyle. W. M. McFadden, HOTEL ARRIVALS.
