SATURDAY... OCTOBER 5, 1872
THY WILL BE DONE.
We see not, knew not. All our way is night. With Thee alone is day.
From out the torrent's troubled drift,
Above the storm—one prayer we lift—
Thy will be done!
The Besh may fail, the heart may faint,
But who are we to make complaints,
Or dare to plead, in times like these,
The weakness of our love of ease?
Thy will be done!
We take with solemn thankfulness
Our burden up, nor ask it less;
And count it joy that even we
May suffer, serve and wait for Thee,
Thy will be done!
Though dim, as yet, in tint and line,
We trace Thy picture's wise design,
And thank Thee that our age supplies,
Its dark relief of sacrifice—
Thy will be done!
And if, in our unworthiness,
Thy sacrificial wine we press;
If, from Thy ordeal's heated bars,
Our feet are seamed with crimson scars,
Thy will be done!
If for the age to come, this hour
Of trial bath vicarious power,
And blessed by Thee, our present pain
Be Liberty's eternal gain.
Thy will be done!
Strike, thon the Master, we Thy keys,
The anthem of the destinies!
The minor of Thy loftier strain,
Our hearts shall breathe the old refrain—
Thy will be done! — Whittier.

Ballots for Congressmen
The statement made in several San Francisco and Sacramento papers, that ballots for Congressmen must be printed separately, appears to have been based upon an erroneous construction of the law. Governor Booth telegraphed to the Secretary of State, at Washington for information, and received the following despatch, which he has given to the press for publication as a matter of importance to the public:
WASHINGTON, D. C., Sept. 17th.
Hon. Newton Booth:—Your telegram to the Secretary of State has been referred to me. Votes for Representatives in Congress are to be written or printed ballots, but their names may go on the same ballot as the names of other persons to be voted for at the same election.
GEORGE H. WILLIAMS.
Attorney-General.
This would seem to be conclusive that the statements made as to the requirement for separate ballots were unfounded. Voters will therefore be saved much trouble, and the liability to loss of votes will be avoided.
THE DEEPEST WELL IN THE WORLD
—At about twenty miles from Berlin is situated the village of Sperenberg, noted for the deepest well that has ever been sunk. Owing to the presence of gypsum in the locality, which is at a moderate distance from the capital, it occurred to the Government authorities in charge of the mines to obtain a supply of rock salt. With this end in view the sinking of a shaft or well sixteen feet in diameter, was commenced five years ago, and at a depth of 280 feet the salt was reached. The boring was continued to a furthur depth of 963 feet, the diameter of this bore being reduced to about 13 inches. The operations were subsequently prosecuted by aid of steam until a depth of 4,194 feet was attained. At this point the boring was discontinued, the barex or bit being in the salt deposit which thus exhibits the enormous thickness of 3,907 feet. The boring would have been completed in order to discover...
A SUBSTITUTE FOR QUININE.—It is claimed that the medical properties contained in the Eucalyptus are of great value in the cure of fever and ague. Experiments in hospital practice tend to prove that it is superior to quinine for all purposes for which quinine is administered, besides being quite harmless in its ultimate effects, which cannot be said of quinine. As the Eucalyptus grows luxuriantly in California, while Peruvian bark is imported, the extract of Eucalyptus could undoubtedly be obtained at much less cost than quinine. A San Francisco firm has commenced its manufacture on a large scale, being satisfied from the results already obtained of its value.
ALWAYS SUCCESSFUL.—While others often fail, Mr. A. E. Putney almost invariably succeeds in finding a good artesian stream the first trial, without extra expense to his employers. This is partly owing to his long experience and peculiar knowledge of the business and also the superior power of his boring tools which enables him to go through strata that are impenetrable to others. His address is Anaheim.
