Southern Californian SATURDAY...OCT. 5, 1872 LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. GREELEY & BROWN. Another Enthusiastic Meeting. Elequent Address by Col. Q. S. Sparks, Hon. Edw. Evey and J. A. Martin Esq - Twenty-one New Members. The meeting was called to order by Judge Evey. The minutes of last meeting read and approved. The report of the Invitation Committee was received, and letters read from Messrs O'Melveny, Lyon, Granger and Dolland; and ordered placed on file. A report of the Finance Committee was received. Twenty-one new members signed the roll making 98 voters to date on the roll. On motion the Sec'y was appointed a committee of one to wait on the Dem. County Com. at Los Angeles, and transact the business of the club. Mr.M.O.Boyle here arose and stated that some action should be taken on the part of the club to effect the resignation or removal of Wm. M. McFadden Esq from the Democratic County Committee, upon the ground that said McFadden does not represent the sentiments of the Democratic party from this section of the County but, on the contrary, is us ing his best and most service. The Texas Pacific Railroad Survey. It will be remembered that on the 17th of last month an engineering party in the employ of the Texas and Pacific R.R. Co. passed Anaheim, running a preliminary line through Santa Ana Canon to San Gorgonio Pass. They were also to examine a route leading more directly toward Arizona from San Diego. The following dispatch from Las Flores throws some light upon their present whereabouts, and the result of their observations thus far: Las Flores, Oct, 3d 1872. Ed. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. The engineers of the S.D. and L.A. Railroad have just completed the preliminary examination of a route leaving the survey of January east, between Buena Vista and Guajome, passing directly through the rancho Santa Margarita, and connecting with original survey between this place and Onofre. They make a very favorable report in regard to the new line, stating that they have shortened the distance several miles, reduced very materially the heavy grades descending into the valley of San Luis Rey, and have done away with the trestle work necessarily used should the road be constructed along the beach between the valleys of San Luis Rey and Santa Margarita. Artesian Well Ed. M. McFadden Esq from the Democratic County Committee, upon the ground that said McFadden does not represent the sentiments of the Democratic party from this section of the County but, on the contrary, is using his best endeavors to misrepresent us and otherwise injure our prospects and imperil our success. On motion of Philip Davis, Esq., a petition from the club was prepared to be presented to the County Committee, praying the removal of said McFadden from that body and the substitution of some other gentleman who will faithfully represent the political status and sentiments of the Democrats of this section of the County upon said Committee. Following named gentlemen signed the roll of the club: Patterson Bowers, Louis Wartenburg, N D Harwood, Capt W T Glassell, J J Johnson Esq., D R White, Jesse Davis, T B Johnson, J S Damron, J B Damron, H P Pankey, D F Webb, Jno Y Anderson, Jno J Johnson, David Taylor MD., G L Russell, Mahuel Abila, E W Champlin, Dallas Lane, D E Schmidt, Anton Struck. An out doors meeting was now held when an audience of about 100 persons were most eloquently addressed by Col Q S Sparks, of San Bernardino, Hon Edward Evey of Fairview, and J A Martin, Esq., of Westminster, which addresses we much regret that from a want of space we are unable to report. The band furnished music in its usual good style, and the old flag, which is ever the rallying point of all good Democrats, waved its signal to the breeze. The meeting then adjourned to Thursday October-10, at the usual hour. Charles G. Johnston, Sec'y Greelev & Brown Club. A correspondent of the California Agriculturist writes from Anaheim as follows: At Anaheim, the noted German settlement, the beautiful twenty-acre farms are inclosed with live fences. The Grant & Wilson Club. Only a small attendance greeted the last meeting of this Club. Thirty-five persons were present including ladies, children and several members of the Greeley & Brown Club. President Guinn presided, and Mr. E G Beebo acted as See'y protem. Of the four speakers appointed, Mr D R Payne Jr. was the only man who "came to time." He read from manuscript a rambling and disjointed address burlesqueing the Liberal Republicans and their meetings here. Had it been intended as an argument, its strength would have been materially impaired by the unfounded statement that Mr. Greeley is trying to buy himself into office, and that he has already promised twice as many post-offices as there are in the Union. A Kobler Esq., S J. Davis Esq., and Mrs. Kate Parker, were appointed speakers for the next meeting. The President announced that eminent speakers from San Francisco might be expected on Tuesday evening 15th inst. Adjourned to Wednesday, Oct. 9th 1872. A United States law repealing stamp taxes went into effect on the 1st inst. It appears that no stamp on a deed of sale is now necessary. The bill "repeals all the stamp taxes except those imposed on bank checks, proprietary medicines and preparations, perfumery, and cosmetics, friction matches, wax tapers, playing cards, and cigar lights." The rates on the above enumerated articles remain the same as heretofore. SUIT AT GALLATIN—Oute an ina puzzle to receive the information. Chas. G. Johnston, Sec'y Greelev & Brown Club. A correspondent of the California Agriculturist writes from Anaheim as follows: At Anaheim, the noted German settlement, the beautiful twenty-acre farms are inclosed with live fences. These Germans, with their twenty-acre farms, show much thrift, and I am told that many of them have become rich upon them. If more of our farmers in California would profit by the examples so plainly demonstrated, and go and do likewise, it would be better for them, I am sure. THE CHAMPION BUNCH OF GRAPES — We have in our office the largest bunch of grapes we have ever seen. It weighs exactly six and a half pounds and is not a double bunch, but a single stem. It is of the Mission variety and grow in the vineyard of H. Woorder Esq., one of the best vinoyards in Anaheim. If any editor knows of anything better than this, let him tell it. ARTESIAN WELL — An artesian well was successfully completed on Monday last by Wm McPherson, and assistants, on the farm of Mr H. Stephen in Westminster. The well is 97 feet deep and has a flow of 1¼ inches over the top of the pipe—half an inch more than most wells. A meeting of the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles and San Pedro Railroad was held yesterday, at which it was resolved that the Company would refuse to receive freight for through shipment to the East per steamer via San Diego News, 28th ult. Hon. J. H. Mitchell is elected U.S. Senator from Oregon. A good choice. The bill “repeals all the stamp taxes except those imposed on bank checks, proprietary medicines and preparations, perfumery, and cosmetics, friction matches, wax tapers, playing cards, and cigar lights.” The rates on the above enumerated articles remain the same as heretofore. SUIT AT GALLATIN — Quite an interesting trial occurred last Wednesday before Justice Ryan, at Gallatin, wherein one Reynolds sued the ex-Board of Water Commissioners for $138, for services as Water Overseer. Chas. G. Johnston, Esq., of Anaheim, conducted the defense, and after an elaborate argument achieved a complete victory for his clients. LATEST. — The Star says Delaware has gone Democratic, also Georgia by 20,000.—J. W. Clark, Esq., Oscar George, N. J. Walby, Jno Bush & wife and M. Classen & wife came from San F'co by Pacific yesterday. The Fulton (N.Y.) Times tells of tall corn, 10 feet high: that ain't a circumstance to corn around Anaheim: we'll have some measured and show you what we call big corn here. CLUBBING RATES — We will furnish the weekly Southern California (by mail) and the Overland Monthly, for six dollars per annum. Messrs Tiffany & Paynter have bought Mr Austin's interest in the Los Angeles Express, and thus become sole proprietors. CHARLES A. — We are too full to publish your poetry this time; probably can do so next week. Westminster. Artesian Wells—Grops—Politics—Hall roads, etc. Westminster, Oct. 1st 1872. Ed. Southern California. — At this time of year there is little of a local nature of interest to the general public. The few who had small grain are about through threshing. I am sorry to say, that the crops are not nearly as good as were expected, but we live in hopes of doing better another season. The corn crop, will be almost a total failure, but if the colonists continue to sink artesian wells successfully, few will ever fail hereafter in securing paying crops. There are now more than twenty flowing wells on the colony, and two sets of tools are constantly employed, sinking others. Messrs Andrew Johnson and Henry Stephens have obtained good flowering wells during the past week. POLITICS Does not seem to attract much attention, and I think it will be quite a puzzle to tell which candidate will receive the most votes in this section. Some find it difficult to tell whether they are Republican or Demicans, and so go traveling round in a hazy, misty sort of a way, trying to find some one to tell them what party they do belong to. There is one subject though on which all seem to agree; that is the RAILROAD. The Overland Monthly, for Oct. Inlets of the Amazonia, Part II.
