Southern Californian SATURDAY... JULY 13, 1872 FOR THE CHILDREN. The leaflets of the forest, The violets of the sod, And the birds that tune their raptures. Unite the sor of God, And the summer wind that bringeth The music of the sea, Have each a voice that singeth This song of songs to me: This world is full of beauty As other worlds above, Then let us do our duty, And make it fall of love. —Bright Side. Invention for Swimmers. A French inventor has patented an apparatus for swimmers; but we think that any frog might bring an action against the man for infringement of a device secured to the batrachians by endowment of nature. For the bands, he has a large membranous fin, which is held in its place by loops passing over the fingers, and a strap around the wrist. The surface presented to the water by these fins is so large as to add greatly to the effectiveness of the strokes of the arm, but not so long as to exhaust the muscular power. This effect is to reduce very much the effort required to swim without them. But the greatest ingenuity is displayed in the form and fitness of the fins of the legs, which are attached to the ankles, and are so formed that they act upon the water, both in the act of bringing the legs together and throwing them back. They act so finely in "treading the water," as swimmers call it, that one can easily walk, if not on the water, at least of the arm, but not so long as to exhaust the muscular power. This effect is to reduce very much the effort required to swim without them. But the greatest ingenuity is displayed in the form and fitness of the fins of the legs, which are attached to the ankles, and are so formed that they act upon the water, both in the act of bringing the legs together and throwing them back. They act so finely in "treading the water," as swimmers call it, that one can easily walk, if not on the water, at least in it. The difference between swimming with the apparatus and without is very much like the difference between rowing a boat without the handle and the blade of an oar. The old swimmer has no trouble in using the fins at the first trial, and is surprised to find at what speed he can swim, without exhaustion. He easily swims twice as fast with the apparatus as without, and he can sustain himself for hours upon the water, or swim miles with it. Methodist Preaching. There is such a thing as too much deliberation in religion. The game gets away while we are loading the gun. The Methodist Church, like the Presbyterian, and Baptist, and Episcopalian, has, of late, felt the tendency to settle back on its lees, and build granite churches, and whittle its old-time hallelujabs down to a quartette, and hand the people up to heaven with delicate kid gloves, which, at the least strain, split in the back. I would not give one of the backwoods Methodist meetings, where I used, in boyhood, occasionally to go and stand at the door, afraid to go in—for fifty persons were converted there in one night—for a hundred precise churches where they keep their religion from spilling by keeping it on ice. We now want a flashing up of the old-time Christian hories. So afraid is the Church of a sensation that it goes into stagnation. It costs from one hundred and fifty to two hundred and fifty thousand dollars to build a church in which to get a few hundred people to heaven, when those two hundred and fifty thousand dollars would build Gospel advantages for ten times the number. In addition to church history and the dead languages, we want a new professorate in our theological seminars, one which will teach our candidates for the ministry how to shoot on the wing. Saddle bags preached the Gospel very well in old times, but saddle-bags must be exchanged for railroads and telegraph wires and big tents. Instead hundred people to heaven, when those two hundred and fifty thousand dollars would build Gospel advantages for ten times the number. In addition to church history and the dead languages, we want a new professorate in our theological seminaries, one which will teach our candidates for the ministry how to shoot on the wing. Saddle bags preached the Gospel very well in olden times, but saddle-bags must be exchanged for railroads and telegraph wires and big tents. Instead of taking a whole day to whip up one fish from the water, we must swing out the great Gospel net, and sweep into the kingdom a whole school of them. He who is afraid of revivals had better die now, before nations are born in a day.—Rev. T. De Witt Talmage. Cure for Poison Oak.—A standing antidote for poison oak, ivy, etc., is to take a handful of quick-lime, dissolve it in water, let it stand for half an hour, then paint the poisoned part with it. Three or four applications will never fail to cure the most aggravated cases. Poison from bees, hornets, spiders' bites, etc., is instantly arrested by the application of equal parts of common salt and biscarbonate of soda, well rubbed in on the part affected. Before retirement at night, apply sweet oil. Sunstroke.—According to a late writer, sunstroke is due to the action of light upon the brain, exerted through the eye, and not, as generally believed, to an elevation of temperature; and it is asseried that if the eye be properly shaded from the glare of the sun, any extra or unusual precaution in the way of protecting the head and the back of the neck may be dispensed with. To obtain seed peas that have not bugs in them, sow peas for raising seed rather late—say in the fore part of June, which will be too late for the bugs. MISCELLANEOUS. MBER! established firm of R.
