Southern California SATURDAY...JULY 12. 1872 LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. A Visit to Wilmington. A few days since, by kind invitation of Mr. Mitchell, of the Anaheim & Wilmington stage line, we enjoyed a visit to our neighboring seaport town. A ride in the early morning, in fine weather, with a good team, good roads and pleasant company is something to be enjoyed and we were accordingly in the best of spirits as we rolled out through the rich fields of Fairview, past the neatly ordered residences of that thriving district, into the open plain beyond. The road to Wilmington is generally very good, the most notable exception being a number of narrow, deep gullies within a few miles of Wilmington, which cause a violent jerking of the stage, and were the means of breaking that useful vehicle, a few weeks ago. One day's work would probably be sufficient to dig them down to a comfortable crossing condition. We found Wilmington looking about as usual; considerable activity about the railroad depot and wharf. By courtesy of Mr J G Holmes, Master Mechanic in the machine shops of the Los Angeles & San Pedro R. R. Co., we were afforded an opportunity of inspecting that big establishment where the iron horse lives when off duty, and the ponderous The Church Building—A Site Selected. Pursuant to adjournment a second meeting of those interested in the proposed church building was held after the close of service, last Sunday. It was decided to submit the question of location to ballot, and this being done the lot offered by Messrs Heimann & George received the highest number of votes and was declared the choice of the meeting. A committee was appointed to secure a deed of the same, within a limited time. The local subscriptions were found to have been augmented to $1,700, which added to the $500 from the Home Society increases the available capital to $2,200. It was resolved to make further efforts to increase the subscription to the desired $3,000, and active building operations will be deferred for a short time. No building committee is yet appointed. In the meantime if there is any man who has not yet pledged himself to a little pecuniary backing of the enterprise, let him do it at once and thereby do a good thing for himself and the home of his choice. Assistance may be afforded either in money, material or labor. The lot selected is just east (120 ft) of Los Angeles street, and 416 ft South of Sycamore street, and is a corner lot, fronting North and East on streets which are to be opened as soon as building is commenced; several of the neighboring lots in the vineyard being already sold and We found Wilmington looking about as usual; considerable activity about the railroad depot and wharf. By courtesy of Mr J G Holmes, Master Mechanic in the machine shops of the Los Angeles & San Pedro R. It Co., we were afforded an opportunity of inspecting that big establishment where the iron horse lives when off duty, and the ponderous machines are kept which do the gigantic work incidental to railroad machinery. Here are the playful little engines that take hold of great iron snails and hammer and pound and twist and gouge and bite them out of all countenance, as easily as a four-year-old boy puts his front teeth through a buckleberry pie. The largest of the Company's locomotives, the "San Pedro," was fortunately at home and we saw the huge machine to great advantage in its quiescent state, feeling sure that while the boiler was cold it could neither throw hot water nor run over us. This engine, we are told, is one of the largest made, and is capable of drawing a load of 200 tons. Everything about the works under the able supervision of Mr H., seems in perfect condition, every man quietly attending to his business without bustle or confusion—all in short conducted with that admirable system and good order which characterizes all the operations of this well managed company, and makes it one of the most prosperous in the world. One of the first objects the traveller sees as he approaches Wilmington from the sea is the vast series of government buildings, corrals, barn, sheds, etc., resembling outwardly an immense fort at the water's edge. The troops have all been removed and the buildings are deserted now. The tread of the warhorse no longer resounds within the great court-yard, and the only life seen in the whole establishment was that of a few vagrant cows, taking a free lunch from the hay still stored in the barn. A visit to the fine large store of Messrs N. & H. Jacoby was next self and the home of his choice. Assistance may be afforded either in money, material or labor. The lot selected is just east (120 ft) of Los Angeles street, and 416 ft South of Sycamore street, and is a corner lot, fronting North and East on streets which are to be opened as soon as building is commenced; several of the neighboring lots in the vineyard being already sold and will be improved within six months. This is a valuable site and the generous donors deserve the thanks of the public for their liberality. Personals. We are glad to hear that Mr Henry Bremermann, of the Anaheim Hotel, who has been for several weeks past stopping at the Springs at Warner’s Ranch, is much improved in health since his arrival there. We have had the pleasure of meeting Mr F. W. Shaw who has lately been traveling through our country as agent of the Scientific Press and Pacific Paral Press of San Francisco. Roy A. W. Edleman and Deacon M. Morris, of Los Angeles, were in Anaheim last Sunday and graced our sanctum with a visit. Don Juan Forster, of San Luis Rey, was in town Tuesday last, on his way home, from San Francisco Deeds Filed. Joseph and Ferdinand Backs to Odd Fellows Hall Building Association; a town lot in Anaheim, for $500. James McKinlay to Pablo Pryor; old Mission of San Juan Capistrano with buildings and orchards, for $500. Jos. McFadden to H. S. Harrison; 120 acres in the Santiago de Santa Ana rancho, for $1,560. B. A. Lewis to H. S. Harrison 20 acres in the Santa Ana ranch, for $260. More Robbery.—A case of boots shipped from San Francisco July 6 by str. Orriftamme, to Messrs Goodman & Rinnan of this city was water's edge. The troops have all been removed and the buildings are deserted now. The tread of the warhorse no longer resounds within the great court-yard, and the only life is found in the whole establishment was that of a few vagrant cows, taking a free lunch from the hay still stored in the barn. A visit to the fine large store of Messrs N. & H. Jacoby was next in order and here we found an establishment which for extent and variety of stock and elegance of fitting up took us by surprise. It is a credit to the town. The Railroad Hotel, well kept by Mr. S. G. Thompson, supplied material consolation for our inner man, and taking an ample store of good things from his table, as well as other matters usually charged in the bill as "sundries," we travelled homeward. A Soda Fountain—With commandable public spirit, Dr. Higgins has brought an elegant soda fountain all the way from the East to refresh thirsty Anabeim people. The drink, flavored by nice syrups, is delightful. It may be seen at the Post office. Arrived—From San Francisco to Anabeim, by Oriflamme, July 8th: Mrs. Jordan & child, of Santa Ana, Alexander Baily & wife, A J Salisbury. Detained for Postage—At the Post-office, a letter addressed to Forlbas Reyna, Altar, Sonora, Mexico. Departed—For San Francisco, Oriflamme, July 11, W R. Olden Esq., H E Boldt, John J Tay. Jos. McFadden to H. S. Harrison; 120 acres in the Santiago de Santa Ana rancho, for $1,560. B. A. Lewis to H. S. Harrison 20 acres in the Santa Ana ranch, for $260. More Robbery.—A case of boots shipped from San Francisco July 6, by str, Oriflamme, to Messrs Goodman & Rimpan of this city, was found on its arrival here to have been opened, and robbed of six pairs of fine boots. A wire quilted boy’s shoe was found to have been surreptitiously added to the contents of the box showing that somebody else’s goods were also robbed. We had occasion last week to record a similar robbery of goods shipped by same steamer and the recurrence of the thefts indicate that somebody is doing a regular business in that line. The Valuation.—According to a statement made in the Railroad meeting at Los Angeles last Saturday, the assessed value of this county, this year will be about $13,500,000. "Not for Joseph."—The Los Angeles News announces that the News, as a Democratic paper, does not support Horace Greeley, of the New York Tribune, for President. Preaching To-Morrow—Rev. W. W. Brier, of Alvarado, will preach for Rev. L. P. Webber tomorrow at 4 P.M. at Enterprise Hall. All are invited to attend. If you have a house you want painted, and want it done well go to Payne Bros. A Big Day's Work—In having been resolved at a meeting of the Water Co., on Saturday last, to clean out the main ditch between the Santa Ana River and town, the ditchmaster, Mr. Henry Knapke was ordered to advise every person interested therein to be present, or represented, and to turn off the water at sunset on Tuesday. Wednesday morning at 6 o'clock, nearly all were promptly on hand, and for those who failed to come the Company provided men. Eighty-five workmen were on the ground. Dr. Heyermann, with his stentorian voice directed the polyglot assemble in their various languages, and had them properly distributed along the work. The river rising, broke the gate which shut off the water from the ditch, and at once rent a flood down upon the workmen. The damage was however promptly repaired, and the cleaning finished by half past three p.m., the whole being a complete success. Important Steamer Movement.—By the following, from the San Diego Union, it will be seen that the Pacific Mail Steamers are here after to touch at San Diego and San Pedro, both ways: San Francisco, July 8, 1872. To C. P. Taggart, Agent P M.S. S. Co.: Commencing July 15th at New York, and July 18th hence, all steamers will touch at San Pedro and San Diego. Begin in August a tri-monthly service. OMISSION.—In the names of those present at the Picnic from Upper Santa Ana, we advertently omitted those of our very good friends Mr. Dan'l Kramer and family, which we hasten to add to the list of those who "Remember the 4th of July to keep it patriotically." If you want a sign painted—Well, you've got to go to Payne Bros., there's no place else. MARKET REPORT. Reported by Littlefield, Webb & Co., San Francisco. SAN FRANCISCO, July 3, 1873.
