Influence of the Sunday School.
"I organized the first Sunday school in this county and ran it myself," said a shrewd but dissipated Wisconsin lawyer. A few of us Americans came here early. We wanted to get in decent, industrious settlers, and keep the rowdy out. So I said 'A Sunday school will draw the folks we want. It will be the best and cheapest way to blow for the settlement.' They all agreed to it. There wasn't a soul of us that pretended to have a grain of piety. So they pitched upon me to carry out the plan. I did it, sending to Mr Rice of the American Sunday-School Union for a library, and ran the school all summer. It did the blowing for us splendidly. Several Christian families came in, and as they had a better stock of piety, I handed the Sunday-school over to them. It was a grand thing for us. We secured a good moral settlement. In fact, sir, it got to be so pious that I couldn't live there myself."
Psyche. — Psyche, according to ancient mythology, was a princess of wonderous beauty. Altars were consecrated to her that properly belonged to Venus, which kindled the anger of that goddess against her. Venus in her rage commanded her son, Cupid, to inspire Psyche with a passion for some frightful monster, out "the rosy boy with a cherub wing," fell in love with her himself and bore her away to a delightful place, where she was visited every night by the young god, who loft her at dawn. Venus in her rage commanded her son, Cupid, to inspire Psyche with a passion for some frightful monster, out "the rosy boy with a cherub wing," fell in love with her himself and bore her away to a delightful place, where she was visited every night by the young god, who left her at dawn. Psyche was persuaded by her sisters that her lover, who visited her only in darkness, was some loathsome and repulsive creature, and endeavored to incite her to destroy him while he slept, but when, by the light of a lamp, she beheld his marvelous beauty, her joy at this discovery rendered her incapable of motion, while a drop of hot oil falling from her lamp awoke him and he fled from presence. She then in despair endeavored to destroy herself but in nature nothing would injure her. At length Venus caused her to fall into a deep sleep from which she was finally arroused by Cupid, who touched her with the point of one of his arrows. She arose "purified through suffering" and was united to her beloved by Jove himself.—Our Fireside Friend.
CALIFORNIA WINE GROWERS. Speaking of the visit of Secretary Delano to California, the Vallejo Independent says: "It is stated that this gentleman, during his recent visit to this State spent much of his time among the wine growers and wine-makers to inform himself of the operations of the laws which affect these interests. It is understood that he will recommend, among other measures for the benefit of California, an important reduction on spirits distilled from fruit—a most important subject to this State. There are several other matters to which Delano's attention was called, which he has promised to look after. The Secretary's visit will result in more advantages to the industrial and productive interests of the State than many people would suppose, who form their opinion from the unostentatious manner of the Secretary."
DEAF AND DUMB DEAD-HEAD. Not long ago two boys between eleven and twelve, were loafing around one of the traveling minstrel halls in Quincy, Ill., trying to get in. DEAF AND DUMB DEAD-HEAD.—Not long ago two boys between eleven and twelve, were loafing around one of the traveling minstrel halls in Quincy, Ill., trying to get in. At last one of them went up to the doorkeeper, and by signs made him believe he was dead and dumb, so that the doorkeeper let him in. The other seeing the success of his partner, went up and made the same sign. "What!" says the doorkeeper, "are you deaf and dumb too?" "Yes," said the forgetful boy. Then, as he received a taste of sole leather, he remembered his part.
Extracts from the papers of rejected schoolmaids in Ohio: "The food is first masticated and then passes through the phalanx." "Respiration is the sweating of the body." "The chest is formed of two bones, the sternum and spinal cord." "Emphasis is placing more distress on some words."
Charles Francis Adams said one day to his son, John Quincy Adams (John was a boy then)—so the story goes—"My son, do you think you know enough to be Governor of Massachusetts?" To which the young gentleman replied "Well, I probably shall by the time I am elected."
There is no action of man in this life which is not the beginning of so long a chain of consequences as that no human providence is high enough to give us a prospect to the end.—Thomas of Malmesbury.
It is curious to note the old sea margins of human thought; each subsiding century reveals some new mystery; we build where monsters used to hide themselves.—Longfellow.
