Southern California. PATURDAY...JUNE 6, 1812 LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. The Bath House — For a leading item this week, we have been taking a look at Mr. Dean's new barber shop and bath house, which is to be opened for business to-day. The building itself is very neatly constructed and is an ornament to the street and neighborhood. The front room is fitted up for the barbering department, and the walls and ceiling are pleasantly grained and colored. In the rear of this are two one-bath rooms, supplied with hot and cold water, where the long-needed luxury of a good bath can at last be enjoyed. In the yard in the rear of the building is the heating apparatus, water tanks, etc., whence the supply of "washing fluid" is kept up. The public are invited to call and inspect the arrangements which have been made for their comfort. THE SAVANNAH WELL — We regret to learn that the boring of this well has been abandoned in consequence of striking a stratum of quicksand at a depth of 288 feet, which it was impossible to penetrate the quicksand rising 24 feet in the pipe, and filling in faster than it could be pumped out. It is an excellent surface well as it stands, an inexhaustible supply of water rising. The School Examination. The closing examination of the Public Schools of this city, on Thursday and Friday of this week, was a grand success, and a most gratifying evidence of the completeness and efficiency of the school departments. VISITORS. A large number of visitors graced the occasion with their presence, among whom were Don Ang Langenberger, and the Misses Carlotta, Regina and Adelaide Langenberger; Miss Annie Bremermann, Mrs. C. Schmidt, Mrs. Flora Eldredge, Miss Mary Kuebel, Mrs. M Calisher, Wm. Higgins (Trustee), Theodore Rimpan (Trustee), and lady; H. D. Polhemus and lady, Mr. Mossman and lady, Mrs. H. E. Boldt, J. J Dyer and lady, Mrs. D. Strodthoff, Mrs. P. A. Korn, the Misses Woerder, J. P. Zeyn (Trustee), and Robt. N. White. THE SCHOLARS Acquitted themselves creditably in their exercises. Declamations were made by Misses Lydia Parker, Matilda Woerder, Matilda Rimpan, Clomie Schmidt, Emma Woerder, Fannie Higgins, Annie Fischer and Nellie Kuchel, and Masters Eddie Schmidt, Addison Dyer, J. R. Marcovich Jno. Langenberger and Oscar Luedke. The declamations of Eddie Schmidt, "I Can and Will," Addison Dyer, "Enology of Washington;" and J. R. Marcovich "Flynn of Virginia," were particularly good. COMPOSITIONS Were read by Misses Flora Luedke, subject "The five Sen- THE SAVANNAH WELL — We regret to learn that the boring of this well has been abandoned in consequence of striking a stratum of quicksand at a depth of 288 feet, which it was impossible to percute the quicksand rising 24 feet in the pipe, and filling in faster than it could be pumped out. It is an excellent surface well as it stands; an inexhaustible supply of water rising to a point 13 feet from the surface. At a depth of 280 feet they passed through a bed of sea shells. LOSS OF THE “W. H. MEYER.” — This schooner, well known to Anaheim people as the vessel which for a long time has been freighting lumber to Langenberger, Blochman & Co., Anaheim Landing, went ashore May 23, in the Straits of San Juan de Fuca, 8 miles below Port Angeles, W. T. It is reported that the vessel is a total loss and that Captain Martin and all the crew, nine in number, were drowned. NEW DIRECTORS. — The following is the new Board of Directors of the Los Angeles and San Pedro R. R. Co.; B. D. Wilson, P. Banning, Hugh Forsman, Win. Furguson, D. W. Alexander, I. W. Hellman, Mathew Keller, S. H. Mott and W. Woodworth. The now officers are: B. D. Wilson, President; P. Banning, Vice-President; I. W. Hellman, Treasurer, and James H. Lander, Secretary. HOME INDUSTRY. — We understand that Heimann & George manufacture here much of the clothing sold in their store, such as overalls, shirts, drawers, etc. Those buying therefore will be sure of getting a well made article, and likewise encourage home industry and spend their money where it will be put in circulation again here in Anaheim. FRESH CRACKERS. — Our merchants can get a much better and fresher article of crackers at the American Bakery, Los Angeles, than from San Francisco, and besides have the advantage of patronizing a local industry. — Try it. WOERDER, FANNIE Higgins. Annie Fischer and Nellie Kuchel, and Masters Eddie Schmidt, Addison Dyer, J. R. Marcovich Jno. Langenberger and Oscar Luedke. The declarations of Eddie Schmidt, "I Can and Will;" Addison Dyer, "Eulogy of Washington;" and J. R. Marcovich, "Flynn of Virginia," were particularly good. COMPOSITIONS Were read by Misses Flora Luedke, subject 'The five Senses,' very good; Rosina Allen, on 'The Parrott,' Minnie Hanna, on 'Truth Telling,' Henry Kuchel, 'The Fire Company,' Ettie Bremermann, 'Obedience to Parents' and J. R. Marcovich, 'Books.' All were good and deserving of great credit. The classes in history, algebra, arithmetic, geography and grammar were remarkably proficient. In the PRIMARY DEPARTMENT. Presided over by Miss D. C. Marquis, the little ones also did well in reading and geography they advanced careful training, while in declaration several very creditable little speeches were made. Altogether, the examination was a most happy affair—a successful victorious termination of the labors of the term. It shows how well the scholars have studied, how faithfully the teachers have performed their work. Freight List. Ex Oriflamme June, 3, 1872. Writing About Us. The Alameda County Gazette, of May 30th, contains quite a lengthy and accurate description of Anaheim and vicinity, from the pen of Judge Nye who visited us a few weeks ago. Blacksmiths. Messrs Crook and Sullivan are good workmen and prompt and reliable in fulfilling their promises for work. Call and see them at their shop on Center Street. Lecture This Evening. Mr. J. F. Manning, of Worcester, Mass., and a correspondent of the Spy of that place, proposes to entertain us this evening, at Enterprise Hall, with an account of his experiences in California travel. This lecture, entitled "To and Through California," has proved very popular at the East, and we doubt not will be exceedingly instructive and interesting. Mr. Manning is a brother of Mr. M. S. Manning, who was formerly agent of the Anaheim Lighter Company, at the Landing. He visited Anaheim on a former trip two years ago and has sent excellent descriptions of our town and country to Eastern publications, thereby aid ing us considerably in becoming known to the world. We hope he will be greeted with a good audience. The lecture commences at 8 o'clock, and the price of admission is fixed at the low rate of 50 cents. Well-Boring Company. We learn that a number of the residents of Westminster are organizing a company for the purpose of boring artesian wells for the members thereof. This is a cheap and easy method of doing this usually expensive work, as it furnishes the use of the machinery and labor on the co-operative plan at a trifling outlay of money to each individual. A well is now being bored on the farm of Mr. Goldsworthy, adjoining that of Mr. McPherson, where water was last struck. The flow of water in Mr. Davis' well is, by an accident temporarily stopped, but it is expected that the obstruction will be removed soon. Personal. We are glad to learn that our old friend L. G. Cabani of San Gabriel has been appointed a Notary Public. Ex-Gov Downey, of Los Angeles paid us a visit on Sunday last. The Governor is looking well and hopeful of the railroad. He was accompanied by Mr. Wolfson, also of Los Angeles, a prominent wool buyer. We have had the pleasure of a call from Mr. J. F. Manning, a nephew of the late Don Abel Stearns, and correspondent of the Worcester (Mass.) Spy, who, with his wife and mother, sister of the late Don Abel, are visiting Southern California. Mr. Manning lectures here this evening on the subject "To and Through California." Mr. M. J. Reilly, of Los Angeles, passed through on Thursday, going to Capistrano for a little country recreation. He was accompanied by Rev. J Mut, of Capistrano. Among the list of passengers to arrive to-day, we notice the name of Mrs. S. Olden, the amiable and accomplished wife of W. R. Older, Esq. Mr Bremermann, the popular host of the Anaheim Hotel, left us yesterday, accompanied by his son Henry, for Warner’s Springs, for his health. We hope that the climate and water may soon restore him to his old-time vigor, and send him back with all the youthful freshness and rejuvenation of the fabled Fountain. General Merchandise.
