Southern Californian. SATURDAY, JUNE 1, 1872 Death of T. Buchanan Read. A sweet poet and an artist of no mean pretensions, a true American has fallen in the death of T. Buchanan Read. Just turned of his fiftieth year, the poet whose lines came from and go to the heart like Goldsmith's, has realized the "Closing Scene." Read was born in 1822 in Chester county, Pennsylvania, and there lived till at the age of 17 he entered the studio of Cleviner, the sculptor, in Cincinnati. He devoted himself principally to potrait painting, acquired some local reputation, went to New York and then to Boston, where he published a number of his lyrics. In 1846 he returned to his native State, to reside in Philadelphia, where he put to press a volume of his poems. Read traveled much in Europe, and lived long in Rome, from whence he has but just returned. Among the latest productions from both the pen and the brush of the poet-artist is the painting of "Sheridan's Ride" and the poem of the same title. Next is "Gray's Elegy," the "Closing Scene," which is like it, is one of the finest poems of the kind in the English language. "The New Pastoral" is a long, finished and most delightful poem, painting to the life most of the prominent events in the career of an American leaving his home and settling and living as a pioneer in the valley of the Mississippi. It is a perfect and charming picture of rural life, melow in tone and patriotic in spirit: The loss of Read is not easily filled Next to Gray Lodge, the opening Scene, which is like it, is one of the finest poems of the kind in the English language. "The New Pastoral" is a long, finished and most delightful poem, painting to the life most of the prominent events in the career of an American leaving his home and settling and living as a pioneer in the valley of the Mississippi. It is a perfect and charming picture of rural life, melting in tone and patriotic in spirit: The loss of Read is not easily filled in the world of letters.—Sacramento Union Where the Sun Never Sets. The following paragraph is from the description of a scene witnessed by Mr. Campbell and a party in the north of Norway, from a cliff 1,000 feet above the sea: The ocean stretched away in silent vastness at our feet; the sound of the waves scarcely reached our airy lookout; away in the north the huge old sun swung low in the horizon, like the slow boat of the pendulum in the tall clock of our grandfather's parlor corner. We all stood silent looking at our watches. When the hands came together at 12, midnight, the full orb hung triumphantly above the waves a bridge of gold running due north, spanned the waters between us and him. There he shone in silent majesty that knew no setting. We involuntarily took off our hats, and no word was said. Combine, if you can, the most brilliant sunrise and sunset that you ever saw, and its will pale before the gorgeous coloring which now lit up the ocean, heaven and mountain. In half an hour the sun had swung by perceptibly on its beat, the colors changed to those of morning, a fresh breeze rippled over the flood, one songster after another piped up in the trees behind us—we had slid into another day." Among others the editor received the following: "The hard that cannot colde a word To rhyme right pat with Conkling, May henceforth pass for a jackass. In other words, a Dunkling." This poet feels sure he has succeeded and calls loudly for "them brandy."
