SATURDAY JUNE 4, 1872
LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
Another Artesian Well—We have the pleasure of announcing that another splendid artesian well has been successfully completed at Westminster on the farm of Mr. Robert McPherson. Mr. M commenced operations soon after the completion of Mr. David well last week, and on Wednesday last, at a depth of only 70 feet, struck one of the finest streams of artesian water that has been found in the country. It completely filled the creek pipe and flows over the top with great force upon the ground. Mr. W. A. Vale of San Bernardino visited the well last Thursday and pronounced it superior, in volume and force of flow to any one of the many fine artesian wells for which San Bernardino is noted. The entire cost of this well is said to have not exceeded $100. We congratulate Mr. M. upon his good fortune.
A TIGHT PLACE—Thomas Shelly found Mr. McPherson by a night place a few mornings since. At a place where a continuation of Point Street intersects the telegraph road to Los Angeles, Mr. Shelly discovered the little fellow in the road with a fallen horse lying on him, the brute being evidently unable to get
The Picnic.
The picnic of the Leiderkman on Sunday last, was a brilliant success. Early in the morning, gay teams, with prancing horses and elegant marriages, dashed out of town, through the cactus to the Santa Ana and out over the rolling plains of the Santiago, to the Santiago Caion.
It was a happy crowd, with care banished from their minds, and plenty of lunch in the baskets, besides sundry bottles and kegs that had been taken along well filled, to be used in the case of snake bite, or that the water in the creek might give out.
The grounds selected were about eight and a half miles from town and by 11 o'clock, some twenty teams, with about one hundred persons, had arrived. The time was pleasantly passed in a variety of ways. The Anaheim Band was there, and to the inspiring strains of music a dance was soon under way. Games were indulged in; leap frog, Copenhagen, and others whose names we are unacquainted with; swings were made, lunches spread under the trees, and a general good time enjoyed by all. It was generally understood that the farmers needed the creek water for irrigation, and so, with a prudent deference to the agricultural interests of the country, the party refrained from drinking it up, but quenched their thirst in other ways. A TIGER PLACE.—Thomas Shelly found a McGinnis bay in a quiet place a few mornings since. At a place where a continuation of Palm street intercepts the telegraph road to Los Angeles, Mr. Shelly discovered the little fellow in the road with a fallen horse lying on him, the brute being evidently unable to get up and release the boy. Mr. S got the horse off and found muchache uninjured. He had been down about half an hour.
For Whistle Beerd — A fog whistle on the point near San Pedro would save the dreamers much trouble as well as the public a deal of anxiety, and lost time waiting for them when over duo: Mr. M. T. Goodman informs us that the Orizabar arrived near San Pedro at half past 4, last Monday morning; but was unable to find her anchorage until 10 o'clock, when the whistle of the steam-tug guided her in.
SAFE AT HOME.—We are glad to see by a late number of the Erie (Pa.) Observer that our pleasant visitor, Dr. Germer, who traveled extensively through Southern California last spring, has gotten safely back to his home at Erie. Come again Doctor, and stay longer.
LABORERS WANTED.—Farmers inform us that they have great difficulty in getting men enough to work their ranches. One man says he offered as high as $50 per month and found, for a good man, but failed to get him. It is estimated that 150 more men could find employment here now.
ARRIVED.—Following named persons arrived here by Orizaba, 27th ulb. A Langeberger, M. L. Goodman, Mr. Greenleaf, Miss Greenleaf, Mr. Webb, D. C. H Rothschild, Mrs. Dorette Rothschild, Henry Rothschild, Louis Rothschild, Regina Rothschild.
STREAKER VAQUERO — This little steamer is announced to leave San Diego or Newport to attend to the names we are unacquainted with; swings were made, lunches spread under the trees, and a general good time enjoyed by all. It was generally understood that the farmers needed the creek water for irrigating, and so, with a prudent deference to the agricultural interests of the country, the party refrained from drinking it up, but quenched their thirst in other ways. In the afternoon a little impromptu address was made by Mrs. Parker; after which the company departed one by one for the homoward drive.
We improved the opportunity of visiting the residence of Mr. Squires a mile and a half further up the canyon, and found that gentleman very comfortably located, indeed. Sheltered by hills from all harsh winds, with a fine large dwelling, erected last year at a cost of several thousand dollars, a good orchard and vineyard started, and plenty of field and garden produce coming on finely, he has a home in many respects one of the finest in the county. The soil and climate is excellent for fruit. One two-year old peach tree has fourteen peaches. Other produce thrives equally well Homp, not over eight weeks old, is already at least seven feet high. The Santiago creek which runs near Mr. Squires house, doubled its volume of water on the occasion of the great earthquake this Spring. Game is abundant. Mr. S showed us the skins of two California lions, which his son had killed a few weeks previous.
Small Matters.
The frame of the Masonic Hall was completed, and the green wreath hoisted at the mast-head last Wednesday.
Prof. Dean has received from Los Angeles Extures for his new bath house.
George Miller's new store is completed and ready for occupancy.

ARRIVED.—Following named persons arrived here by Orizaba, 27th ult., A Langerberger, M. L. Goodman, Mr. Greenleaf, Miss Greenleaf, Mr. Webb, D. C. H Rothschild, Mrs. Dorette Rothschild, Henry Rothschild, Louis Rothschild, Regina Rothschild.
STREAMER VAQUERO.—This little steamer is announced to leave San Diego or Newport "to attend to the lighters of that place for a short time." She is to make regular trips between San Diego and San Pedro as soon as her business at Newport is completed.
CHARGE OF RESIDENCE.—Dr. J. S. Gardiner has temporarily changed his residence to the dwelling of Mr. Alexander Gardiner, two miles northwest of town where he may be found except during office hours. Office same as here told.
JAW BROOKS.—Charles Benbrook, of Gallatin, was thrown from a buggy last Wednesday evening and sustained a fracture of the knee. Dronton Rewards and Reeves, and the patient is doing well.
GOTHING ARRAY.—We learn that two of the workmen on the Willington breakwater engaged in a cutting affray in a saloon in that place Wednesday evening. One of them is severely injured.
SOUTHERN DISP. AG'L ASS.'S announced to be held at Los Angeles to-day, at 12 o'clock.
MASONIC.—The attention of Braisons is called to the announcement at a meeting of the Lodge this evening:
Prof. Dean has received from Los Angeles Extures for his new bath house.
George Miller's new store is completed and ready for occupancy.
Mrs. Metz's new store building is nearly completed, and will be occupied next week.
Header wagons have made their appearance.
A large quantity of hay is being cut at Tustin City.
RETURNED.—Mr. M. L. Goodman, of the firm of Goodman & Rimpan, returned from San Francisco this week, with a large and fresh stock of dry goods including a full assortment of the famous "Dolly Varden" patterns. See their new advertisement.
RAFES OF FARM.—Having heard a rumor that the San Francisco steamers had raised the price of cabin passage to $25, we made inquiries and ascertained that it was unfounded, only $15, the usual price, being charged.
At Richland the farmers are busy irrigating their corn land. The land is sold cheap, and on easy terms, with water right. It is thought to be the best vine-land in the country.
TREOGRAPHIC BLUNDERS—In the Call's telegraphic report of the proceeding of the Los Angeles Railroad Meeting, the name of our respected fellow citizen, W. R. Olden, appears as "S. Olson."
DEED FILED—Jacob Keller to W. A. Vale, lot 6 in block E Anaheim city, for $150.
