Southern California. SATURDAY... MAY 28, 1872. A Famous Quack.—Count Cagliostro sold at an enormous price the "Balm of Life," and declared he had attained the age of 200 years; and that with the uses of this wonderful medicine he was entirely insensible to poison. When descanting one day at Strasburg before a large audience, he made the statement that he was invulnerable to poison. A physician who was present left the room privately and obtained two pills. Coming back to the hall where the Count was haranguing the people, he approached him and said: "Here, my worthy Count, are two pills; the one contains a mortal poison, the other is perfectly innocent. Choose one and swallow it, and I engage to take that which you leave. This will be considered a decisive proof of your medical skill, and enable the public to ascertain the efficiency of your extolled elixir." Cagliostro struggled with the situation, made many apologies, but would not touch the pill. His opponent swallowed both, and then proved by the apothecary that they were simply common bread. A VART UNDERTAKING — It appears that the project of cutting a submarine tunnel between England and France is now being seriously considered. One hundred and fifty thousand dollars is first to be expended in an experimental drift way. This amount has already been raised by subscription. The English capitalists do not ask for government subsidies, and the work is to be vigorously prosecuted. One hundred and fifty thousand dollars is first to be expended in an experimental drift way. This amount has already been raised by subscription. The English capitalists do not ask for government subsidies, and the work is to be vigorously prosecuted. The French have not, thus far, responded with money, though they are quite anxious for the enterprise to go forward as are the English. Crossing the channel in rough weather is always a terror, and this great tunnel will obviate its pains and penalties. The Jollet (Ill.) Republican has the following at head of its column of reading notices: "Some men are born mean; some men achieve meanness; and some men have meanness thrust upon them. The first class take their county paper without intending to pay for it; the second class get it a year for nothing and then refuse to take it out of the post-office; and the third class won't subscribe for it because generous neighbors loan them copies." The Cincinnati Times records the following conversation through a medium, as a touching triumph of spiritualism: "James," said the weeping Gould, "where are you?" "In hell," said James. "How are you getting along?" said Jav. "Bully, old pard," replied Prince Erie. "You see I've put the fire out, and now I've got a 'corner' on brimstone." The cultivation of the Chinese bamboo in California is exciting some attention. It can be put to many uses. Its appearance is beautiful, its shade is most grateful. The Chinaman sits under it and upon it; he sails in it and by it; he is rocked in it; his furniture is made of it; he clothes himself with it, and spanks the young ones with it. In fact the graceful bamboo is as useful as it is ornamental. Fishes breathe through their skins, as well as by means of their gills. So says M. Grehaut in the Revue Scientifique. His experiments also show that fishes are able to live in the water after they have exhausted, by breathing, nearly all the oxygen which it holds in solution. The tests as to these points were made upon gold-fish. Fishes breathe through their skins, as well as by means of their gills. So says M. Grehaut in the Revue Scientifique. A colored poet of Memphis has reduced the Fifteenth Amendment enforcement bill to rhyme, as follows: "It is a sin to steal a pin, A crime to cut a throat— But a darned sight bigger to stop a nigger From putting in his vote." Bits of iron will prevent water from becoming putrid. Sheet iron or trimmings are the best. The offensive smell of water in vases of flowers would be avoided by putting a few small nails in the bottom of the vases. Emerson preached a whole discourse in a few lines thus: "The accepted and betrothed lover has lost the wildest charm of his maiden in her acceptance of him; she was heaven while he pursued her as a star—she cannot be heaven if she stoops to such a one as he." A wag, observing on the door of a house the name of two physicians, remarked that it put him in mind of a double-barreled gun—if one missed the other would be sure to kill. On good authority it is pronounced abroad that two drops of turpentine oil in a little milk is a complete antidote to phosphorus poison. "Hair manure" is what a young May inquired for in one of the Keokuk drug store last week when she wanted a bottle of hair renewal. ANAHEIM HOTEL, HEARY MORRISHAW, Prairie.
