Southern California. SATURDAY... MAY 25, 1872 LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT FARMING.—"Gentlemen may cry. Peas! Peas! but there are no peas." Nice country this must have been in P. Henry's time to warrant such a gloomy conclusion. That expression may have been all right then, but it won't go down, now—it's too thin—for we have just been the favored recipient of the nicest mess of green peas that any country ever shelled out. They came from the garden of Mrs Kate Parker, and she has our thanks. And if we were called upon to originate a new beatitude we would say from the bottom of our hearts. Blessed are they who do kindly remember the editor. For their days shall be long in the land. FARMING MACHINERY. — Messrs Hoimann & George are doing a regular missionary work in distributing those civilizers-farming machinery—over the country. We noticed, a few days since at the residence of Alfred Metcalf Esq., Los Coyotes Rancho, a splendid Hoadley's Engine, with a Russell Separator, looking as big as a train of cars, ready to travel. Also a world Mower and a Haines Header. All purchased of Messrs H. & G. Both sailer and purchaser deserves much care. Our Schools. Anaheim has good reasons to be proud of her schools. Though no fine buildings—no imposing structures mark the spot where "Education forms the common mind," yet the system of training and the teachers themselves are among the best in the land. We had the pleasure of visit there this week, and found everything progressing in fine condition. The schools at the present time are sustained by private subscription, the public funds having being exhausted last month. This term will only continue two weeks longer, when a ten-weeks' vacation commences. There are 32 scholars in the Grammer department who under the able supervision of Mr. J. M. Guinn, Principal, seem remarkably proficient and well advanced in their studies. The Primary school, taught by Miss D. O. Marquis has at present 83 scholars and everything connected with this department avances the careful training of a skillful kind and patient teacher. Personals. Mr. Thoa Talbert, of Green's Land Agency, and special agent for the San Francisco Examiner, paid us a visit last Saturday. Mr. C. M. Plumb, of Brooklyn, N.Y., and connected with the New York World, passed through San Diego on Sunday last going north. Like a sensible man he calls at all the newspaper offices, and The Millinery Store—Buying ladies' hats has become quite the rage since the opening of Mrs. Eldredge's new store. The married men are supplying their wives with all the elegant little fixings known to the profession, and as for the poor baconelors, there's a heap of trouble on their minds because those beautiful hats are likely to be all gone before they have any one to buy them for. Runaway.—Mr. Frank Parker's team ran away from home last Saturday with an empty hay wagon, burst through a strong board fence, came to town and went back again, with no greater damage than cracking the pole. Mr. Parker got off the wagon in a hurry when they started—in fact it was remarked by good observers that he made two revolutions in the air before he struck bottom. He is all right however, and still able to tell the story. Picnic of the Liederkranz.—Those who like to get away from business scenes and enjoy a day's sport, will have just the chance tomorrow, at Santiago Cañon, along with our famous singing club, the "Liederkranz," which holds one of its pleasant picnics there. Go and see how it is yourself. Smash-Up.—Capt. Wolf met with quite an accident last Sunday evening, in Los Nietos, by the fright of a team which he was driving home from Los Angeles. The horses broke the pole from the buggy and inflicted such serious injuries as Mr. Thoa Talbert, of Green's Land Agency, and special agent for the San Francisco Examiner, paid us a visit last Saturday. Mr. C. M. Plumb, of Brooklyn, N.Y., and connected with the New York World, passed through San Diego on Sunday last going north. Like a sensible man he calls at all the newspaper offices, and gets the most correct impression of the country from the style of paper it supports. He assures us that he knows the affairs of the Southern Pacific Railroad (32d Parallel) and that that road is certain to be built at an early day. He expresses himself as highly pleased with Anaheim, and we shall probably hear more from him through the columns of the World. Small Matters. The frame of the Masonic Hall is up and a good force of workmen pushing it ahead to completion. Prof Dean will occupy his new barber shop about June 1st. The weather has been pleasant all the week. New hay, loose, is sold for $5 to supermarket; baled, $8. Crops on the Upper Santa Ana are excellent. Santa Ana Store.—Who does the business at Santa Ana is very clearly shown by the freight lists Every steamer has a large consignment to W. H. Spurgeon, who evidently enjoys a monopoly of the trade south of the Santa Ana. We are glad of it. He is a gentleman, does the fair thing by his friends, and deserves their patronage. Large Freight.—We notice that Messrs. Langenberger & Co. received by last steamer 867 packages of merchandise. This is the best evidence of the very large business this popular firm is doing, and the high favor in which they are deservedly held by the public to warrant such importations. Arrivals.—Following passengers SMASH-UP. Capt. Wolf met with quite an accident last Sunday evening, in Los Nietos, by the fright of a team which he was driving home from Los Angeles. The horses broke the pole from the buggy and inflicted such serious injuries as to necessitate placing that vehicle on the dry dock on its arrival here. DOGICIDE. A large yellow dog put in an appearance, dead, in our main street Thursday morning, having evidently been poisoned. You can judge from this that items are very scarce, else we should not be reduced to the necessity of interviewing dead dogs. ACCIDENT. Our young friend Byron Clark had the misfortune to run a pitchfork time through his foot, last week, and came near having the lock jaw in consequence. He has recovered however and is again able to eat his regular rations. BOTTLED BEER. This excellent drink especially grateful in warm weather may be bad of F. Conrad of the California Brewery, whose wagon delivers it daily to families in any part of town. Try it. FOR ARIZONA. Our fellow townsman Pedro Blanco departed last Thursday morning on a trading trip to the land of the dandy Apache. COTTON-Mr. W. B. Olden is planting one hundred acres of cotton, a portion of which is already up and looking well. LARGE FEWIGHT. We notice that Messrs. Langanberger & Co. received by last steamer 267 packages of merchandise. This is the best evidence of the very large business this popular firm is doing, and the high favor in which they are deservedly held by the public to warrant such importations. ARRIVALS. Following passengers for Anaheim came down by the Oriflamme, Tuesday last; Alfred Metcalf, P. C. McKinnie, Mrs. Harwood & 2 children, Miss. Harwood and H Wehmeyer. BALL AT GALLATIN. A ball will be given at Gallatin next Thursday evening, in the splendid new school house there (the finest in the country). Go over and make our friends a visit and have a good time. SAVANNAR WELL. This well was down 236 feet on Thursday. They are now in blue clay and hope to strike flowing water by the time this stratum is passed. Rumor credits one wing of the Republicans with an intention to reward their new convert, Senator Pendegast, with a congressional nomination. GRAPES. Present appearances indicate that the branches of grapes will this year be much larger than usual. GRASSHORES. Have again made their appearance for considerable numbers in some parts of San Jose Valley. ANAMERICA ASSOCIATION. The general meeting of this Association is scheduled to be held this evening. GOOD NEWS! Artesian Well in Washington. Three men named Mr. J. Merritt are informed that a fine stream of artesian water has been extracted at a depth of only two feet on the base of the Leslie Dawn in Westminster Colony. Mr. Davis commenced boring on Saturday last and the following Tuesday, after only three days' work, a large figuring stream was reached, which now runs over the pipe, over four feet above the ground, and it is thought will reach a much greater height when the pipe is extended. This is good news, both for Mr. Davis and the whole Colony, for it demonstrates the practicability of obtaining artesian water, and with plenty of water, the prosperity of the county is assured. We learn that Robert McPherson and Converse Howe are willing to try their luck in the same way, encouraged by the success of Mr. Davis, and we doubt not, will be similarly rewarded. Crops in the Colony are looking well, corn especially, which is now two feet high. Freight List. Ex Oristamme May, 22, 1872.
