Southern California. Chas. A. Gardner...Edr & Prop'r SATURDAY.....MAY 11, 1872 Deep Artesian Wells. That of Grenelle bored for the use of the slaughter houses of Paris, is 1,771 feet deep. Water ascends 91 feet above the surface, which shows a prodigious hydrostatic pressure somewhere, to drive a column with suction into the air. At Neusalzwerk, near Minben, there is an artesian well 2,394 feet deep out of which pours salt water. One was bored some years since for a sugar refinery in St. Louis, Mo., deeper still, being 2,624 feet in perpendicular depth. The water in those deep recesses rises in temperature the further down below the level of the sea. In some of the geysers on this continent and in parts of Europe it is believed it may be heated in the bowels of the earth to 600 degrees, but in its ascent toward the surface it cools rapidly, rarely being 200 at its escape. Where does the water come from in these lower regions? It gathers on mountains and indeed everywhere, and trickles down seams and dislocations of rock, porous strata, &c., till reaching incandescent matter in a state of fusion, it is converted into steam forced where there is least resistance, becoming condensed into water again, but pushed on by steam behind. A Whopper. The legal agent of the Central Pacific Railroad company, Mr. Sargent, who is now showing his true colors in Congress, in a recent debate said "the people of California were almost unanimous in favor of A Whopper. The legal agent of the Central Pacific Railroad company, Mr. Sargent, who is now showing his true colors in Congress, in a recent debate said "the people of California were almost unanimous in favor of the Bill giving Goat Island to Stanford and Co." Sargent deliberately lied, for he had seen a petition against the measure signed by over 25,000 names, secured in San Francisco alone. There is not one voter out of twenty in this State in favor of relinquishing Goat Island for any commercial purpose. Sargent very well knows that he was made a Senator against the will of the Republican party, and he is determined to bring the organization down to his own level.—Santa Cruz Sentinel. A Scandalous Play.—The Washington Critic of the 16th say: In "Black Friday," shortly to be produced at Niblo's, New York, Mr. McKee Rankin will impersonate Stokes; Miss Pelssy Mordaunt; Mrs. Josie Mansfield; Mr. J. Collier, James Fisk; and Mr. Harry Pearson, Boss Tweed. There is something very scandalous in placing such a piece before the public, and we trust that New York has got sufficient decency to hiss it from the stage. Unjust.—The Chicago Tribune says of the stringent law recently enacted by the Legislature of Illinois; "It's a nice law, this new temperance statute. You can get drunk, larrup your wife and knock smithereens out of the furniture, and then make the man who sold the virus pay all the damage." It is very mean after one has had so much true enjoyment to make another man pay for it. All over India sweetmeats are considered as a substantial article of food. A native, when travelling, seldom eats anything else; and between the two great meals, at all times, he whiles away the long noon of the Indian summer day by sucking lollipops or candy between the whiffs of his hookah. When a Hindoo wants to be very dissipated he simply eats candy enough to make him sick. The eighth of a grain of strychnine will kill a dog. One-fourth of a grain will produce powerful symptoms of poisoning in a strong man, food. When a Hindoo wants to be very dissipated he simply eats candy enough to make him sick. The eighth of a grain of strychnine will kill a dog. One-fourth of a grain will produce powerful symptoms of poisoning in a strong man, and less than a grain will in most cases kill. It is the most powerful poison known. The Boston Globe wants young men to cut out and paste in their hats this piece of information: That the law fixes the price of solemnizing and certifying a marriage by a minister at $125, while to get a divorce costs $50. The king of Dahomey is said to have received the Italian scientific commission, seated on his throne, his body profusely decorated with blue, gold and green labels carefully peeled from medicine bottles bro't into his country by Europeans. A St. Albans lawyer has discovered that "when we look back in the untroddden paths of the future, we behold the footprints of an Almighty hand." A printer's devil in an Omaha newspaper office was bitten by a dog some days ago. After lingering several days death put an end to the sufferings of the dog. The Texas Pacific Railway is to be 1,515 miles in length. For 250 miles the road will be an air line, and in a stretch of 815 miles there will be but six bridges. They have no old maids in Japan.
