LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
Inequality or Time Growth.—The great disparity in the growth of trees of the same age and species, and in the same soil, is very well illustrated by the following: Mr. L. Jander, of this place, has two orange trees, 12 years old, which were brought from Los Angeles ten years ago. One of them was killed by frost clear down to the root seven years ago, the other escaping uninjured. Now the one which was entirely frozen down and the body of which has consequently but seven years growth, is a fine, vigorous tree, at least 15 feet high, with a trunk 4 inches in diameter, while its comrade, with 12 years' uninterrupted growth, is a small, puny looking switch, not over 6 feet high and not thicker than a light whip-stalk.
VEGETABLES.—It seems as though Anaheim ought to raise her own vegetables, yet the only regular source of supply, as far as we can see, is from a Chinese peddler, who comes two or three times a week and sells, at exhorbitant prices, a much poorer article than could easily be produced right here. With a rich soil, warm climate and every circumstance favorable, it is a great pity to pay to a stranger several hundred dollars a month for what we...
Anahim ought to raise not own vegetables, yet the only regular source of supply, as far as we can see, is from a Chinese peddler, who comes two or three times a week and sells, at exhorbitant prices, a much poorer article than could easily be produced right here. With a rich soil, warm climate and every circumstance favorable, it is a great pity to pay to a stranger several hundred dollars a month for what we could just as easily produce at home. Will some one go into the business and get rich? Nonsense to talk about hard times, when such a chance as this is thrown away.
Bad Print.—We apologise to our readers for the spotted appearance of our paper last week. It was caused by the hot weather, which melted the composition rollers out of shape, and made them so rough that the types could not be properly inked. The last was not discovered until we were ready to go to press, when it was, of course, too late to make new rollers for that issue, and we had to do the best we could with the imperfect ones. Accidents will happen in country printing offices.
Millinery.—Mrs. Flora Eldredge has just received by express, per Oriflamme, of Thursday last, a large and elegant stock of millinery goods of latest styles, which will be open to the public next week, in Mrs. Metz's new building, on Center street, adjoining this office. This is a new enterprise in Anahim, and a needed one, too, for with the advent of the warm season, will be wanted stylish and pretty hats to set off to advantage the many beautiful faces that appear upon the street.
Personnel.—Rev. Mr. Bennett, who left us several months since, to preach in Kern Co.; has just returned for his family who will move to their future home at Havilah. We learn that Mr. B has labored with great acceptance in his new field, and while we regret his departure from among us, we trust that he and his little family flock may find, in our sister county, a congenial home and pleasant fested in the election for city officers, on Monday, 6th, and a larger vote was polled than expected, considering the fact that many of our Citizens are opposed to a continuance of the city government and declined to vote. “La Cronica.”—We have the pleasure of welcoming a new contemporary, published at Los Angeles in the Spanish language, under the above title, by Teodali & Co. The “Co,” we believe is Mr. F. P. Ramirez, one of the most popular and courteous members of the Los Angeles bar, as well as a talented writer and an experienced newspaper man. “La Cronica” is about the size of the Express (6 columns). It announces itself as politically entirely independent. Terms $5 per year. It has our best wishes for success.
Richland.—Splendid crops have been raised this year at Richland. Grain five feet high, without irrigation and corn as fine as any in the county. The big canal is now flumed across the Santiago, by a flume 700 to 800 feet long, and supplies irrigating water to all purchasers on the Chapman Tract; who desire it. Crops there are entirely uninjured by frost, and experience shows that this locality is not subject to frost, not being visited by it at all.

PERSONAL—Rev. Mr. Bennett, who left us several months since to preach in Kern Co.; has just returned for his family who will remove to their future home at Havilah. We learn that Mr. B. has labored with great acceptance in his new field, and while we regret his departure from among us, we trust that he and his little family flock may find, in our sister county, a congenial home, and a pleasant path in life.
DR. GARDINER—We invite attention to the announcement of this gentleman in another column. The Dr is a graduate of the great University of Pennsylvania, one of the most famous American institutions of medical learning, and comes to us with the prestige of successful practice in the oldest states. He makes his home permanently in Anaheim, and we bespeak for him a fair share of public patronage.
COUNCIL MEMBER—The Common Council met on Wednesday last at 3 P.M. to receive the returns of the late city election, which being over, they adjourned to Monday next at 3 P.M.
ARRIVING—Following named persons arrived per Griffiths Thursday; SG Nye & wife, John Nye, Mrs C Rohm, H Wonder, Mr Bryan, WT Wallace & wife, D Monke.
Workmen have already commenced on the Masonic Hall buildings. It is to be 50 feet front by 60 deep with a front elevation of 35 feet.
If you have a house you want painted, and want it done well go to Payne Brog.
F. & A. M.—The contract for building the Masonic Hall building was let on Monday last to Mr. Stappenbeck for $3,350, that being the lowest bid. This includes all the work except the painting. Material is already being placed on the ground. Work is to be commenced at once and the building so far completed by the 24th of June that the Lodge may meet there on that occasion, for the celebration of St. John’s day.
I. O. or O. F.—The Odd-Fellows Lodge of this place have bought for $500, from Messrs F. & J. Backs, the fine lot on the East side of Los Angeles street, cornering on the small street on the north side of Enterprise Hall. Size 50 by 120. We learn that it is the intention of this flourishing Lodge to erect a fine brick edifice, at an early day upon the property.
PAINTING—Those who want their houses painted and finished in a style and manner that invites and delights competition will do well to call on Jasper Hill, who challenges any workman in the county to show more and better jobs turned off within the past four years.

BUSINESS NOTICES.
If You Die To Day Would your family have anything after settling up your estate? You can make sure that they would be provided for, by taking out a small policy in the Union Mutual Life Ins. Co. It works on the non-forfeiture plan. J. Carlin Los Angeles Agent, or Richard Melrose Local Agent for Anaheim and vienna.
LAFAYette Hotel — This popular house is deservedly a favorite with Anaheim people when they visit Los Angeles. The excellent beds, good meals, and above all, the genial, smiling face of Chris Fluhr, makes everything homelike and pleasant, while at the same time the charges are more reasonable than any other house of equal accommodations.
Had to Move — Business grown too large for the old quarters, all the result of doing so well by the public, that the old establishment became altogether inadequate to accommodate the increasing numbers. We refer to Eugene's Restaurant which has just been removed to a more commodious and centrally located building, corner Spring and Temple streets, Los Angeles.
THE LARGEST Wholesale store on the Southern Coast, is that of Hellman, Haas & Co., Los Angeles. Interior merchants supplied at San Francisco wholesale prices.
FINER CUT — Lovers of good chewing tobacco will find a new brand, just received, at Clark's. Also
