FROM THE FRYING-PAN INTO THE FIRE.—On Sunday last an Indian, named Jose Antonio, was locked up for a petty offense, in our city jsil. It appears that he entertained the idea of burning himself out. For he immediately commenced tearing down everything combustible that could be found inside of the cell, and ripped the same upon the floor as a The Picnic. The various picnics were well attended on the Ist, although many were deterred from going by the threatening appearance of the weather in the morning. At Tustin City the pleasant makers assembled near the school house and when the wind became too fresh, betook themselves to its shelter. The attendance was large and the building well filled. A varied and interesting programme was gone through, consisting of vocal and instrumental music, readings, declamations, recitations, etc. The entire force of youngsters from the Richland school were brought over, trained in singing exercises, and added laterally to the interest of the occasion. Short addresses were made by N. T. Harris, E. R. Nicoles and Mrs. Kate Parker. The Misses Tustin, Miss Kate Harris, and Mr. Walter Robinson favored the company with readings, and Miss Annie Casad contributed a recitation to the day's enjoyment. At Santa Ana the picnic was held under the beautiful trees near Mr. A. L. Bush's residence. A large company put in an appearance well supplied with lunch baskets, and passed a pleasant May-day in the sports and festivities incident to the occasion. A dance was in contemplation for the evening, but the weather proved a trifle too warm for such active exercise, and the project was abandoned. Our informant extolled: Ex Senator, Ap A R6, C W FS1, F & J B1 W2, H M8, H B & Co 40, J P R28, J K6, J J B9, J M2, J P L & Co 12, L & L P W20, M C S & H 90. FROM THE FRYING-PAN INTO THE FIRE.—On Sunday last an Indian, named Jose Antonio, was locked up for a petty offense, in our city jail. It appears that he entertained the idea of burning himself out, for he immediately commenced tearing down everything combustible that could be found inside of the cell and piled the same upon the floor as a good housekeeper would prepare to build a rousing fire. He even broke into the adjoining cell and robbed that of all the elegant furniture which the considerate benevolence of our city fathers had provided for just such dead—heads as he; and having added the door casing, water closet, etc., of cell No 2, to those of cell No 1, he did then and there, with a strong hand and with malice aloof thought, set fire to the afore-said plow, prepared himself to profit by the general confusion which might be expected to follow—to "fold his tent like an Arab, and silently steal away." But, alas for the uncertainty of human calculations things didn't turn out as he expected and, the fire being (fortunately for himself) soon discovered, he was met by the stern visage of Marshal Lehman, who marched him once more before Judge Kohler, where a charge, proportioned to the magnitude of the new offense, was entered against him and he was sent to Los Angeles to answer before a higher tribunal. And now he takes his hash at the Hotel de Routland and reflects mournfully upon the fact that he has made his condition far worse and chances for future liberty beatifully less than when he rested, under only a few days sentence, in the little jail around the corner. SCHOOL ELECTION.—The election for School Trustee on Saturday 27th ult. resulted in the unanimous re-election of the present worthy incumbent, Dr. W. M. Higgins. Only 11 voters tured out, which is a pretty fair sample of the interest manifested by the public in school elections. A large company put in an appearance well supplied with lunch baskets and passed a pleasant May-day in the sports and festivities incident to the occasion. A dance was in contemplation for the evening, but the weather proved a trifle too warm for such active exercise, and the project was abandoned. Our informant estimates the number of those present at about 150. Weather Record. Saturday April 27th. Morning pleasant—North-west wind sprang up about noon, which brought a light shower of rain in the afternoon. Temperature 60 to 70. Sunday 28. Pleasant all day, light North-west breeze. Payne Bros. ask no pay for work that don't give entire satisfaction. Damage by Fire.—On Wednesday last, 1st inst., a fire was started to burn dry cactus on the ranch adjoining the residences of Messrs. Frank Parker and Chas Counza, just east of town, when the high wind which arose that morning communicated the flames to the barley field of Mr. Parker and threatened destruction to the dwellings of both families. No one was at home except Mrs. Connza and her sister, Miss Eva Parker, but these ladies proved equal to the emergency, and gallantly fought the fire, against heavy odds, until after four hours hardwork, they succeeded in conquering it—as women always do succeed, when they make up their lowing: "The Southern nation (Congregating San Buenaventura day of June next), P.M. Only 11 voters tured out, which is a pretty fair sample of the interest manifested by the public in school elections. An occasion which promises neither whisky nor cigars is not likely to enlist the enthusiasm of the average American voter. In Fairview District no election was held, and an appointment will be made by the County School Superintendent to fill the vacancy. TUSTIN CITY SCHOOL ELECTION.—The Election held on Saturday last at Tustin City resulted in the unanimous election of Messrs Andrew Mills, John Rice and A. McNorton as School Trustees, for the terms of one, two and three years respectively. A tax was also voted for the purpose of building a $900 school house, and raising $800 besides, for general school purposes. Andrew Mills was also elected Assessor and Collector of the District.
