San Clemente Island.
San Clemente Island lies about twenty-five miles west of Catalina Island, and is about its equal in size. At present it is utilized as a sheep run, there being at the time of the last shearing from ten to fifteen thousand sheep browsing on its pasturage. In consequence of its distance from the main land, added to its isolated position, shepherds are dispensed with, and no attention is paid to the flocks by their owners from one shearing season to another. Strange to say, not a spring or stream of water has yet been discovered on any part of the Island. The sheep are supposed to obtain moisture to allay their thirst from the sea fogs with which the grass is almost constantly drenched. These fogs also sustain good pasture throughout the year, and the sheep are always in good condition. The wool season having fairly set in, sheep shearers are now on their way to the Island to ease the flocks of their fleece. The wool is brought away in the schooner that conveys the shearers thither. The number of sheep on the Island cannot be ascertained until the shearing, which will continue for three weeks or a month, has been completed. Unless some evil has befallen the flock, their number now is double that of last year.—Los Angeles News.

We once knew a man who opposed the location of a railroad depot on one corner of his farm, for the reason that its presence would soon make his land so valuable that he could not pay the taxes; but it has been reserved for Canada to cap the climax in the way of objectors to railways. A Dominion M. P. made a speech in Parliament not long since, in which he protested against each and every proposed line of rails, on the ground that the locomotives would frighten the cows; and so impair the quality of their milk!
A venerable Madagascar chief has made a wonderful discovery. "What," he has asked his countrymen, "do the Vagah (Europeans) want with India-rubber? Why, to make big ships! When they have got plenty they will make great India-rubber ships and come Madagascar to take it, and when our soldiers Tamatave fire guns at them the balls will rebound and kill our own men. We are fools to sell them the rubber, and this, I say to you all, don't do it."
This is the way in which a South Sea Islander settled a case of conscience:
The missionary had rebuked him for the sin of polygamy, and he was much grieved. After a day or two he returned, his face radiant with joy.
"Mo all right now. One wife. Me very good Christian."
"What did you do with the other?" asked the missionary.
"Me eat her up."
Samuel Harrimann, of St. Croix (Wis.), retired from military life with a brevet brigadiership. "Goodby General," were the parting words of his old comrades in the army. "How are you, Colonel?" was the salutation on reaching Wisconsin. As he approached home this began to come down to "How d'ye do, Captain?" and finally, when he came among the boys at home, he was greeted with "Hallo, Sam; got back again?"
Corundum is obtained of the best
Corundum is obtained of the best quality in the mountain region of North Carolina. It is identical in substance with sapphire and ruby, and is the hardest form of matter known, except o-the diamond, having a cutting power, compared to the latter of 90 to 100, while that of emery is only 57. It will consequently polish every substance but the diamond, and even that when rapid friction is applied.
Vice-President Colfax says that the happiest days of his life were when he was a printer. Come to our office, Schuyler, and you shall have the old familiar job at at twenty-five cents per thousand.—Lowell Courier.
Some idea of the vastness of St. Paul's Cathedral, London, is had in the fact that no fewer than 14,000 persons were under its roof on the occasion of the royal thanksgiving.
"The sexes are made for one another," was the text of a lecture by a young lady in California, recently. She appealed to the audience to prove truth of her wonderful discovery. [Great applause.]
"Don't trouble yourself to stretch your mouth any wider," said a dentist to a man who was extending his jaw frightfully, "as I intend to stand outside during the performance."
