Southern California. SATURDAY, MARCH 20, 1872. MOTELHERY AND LA ROCHELLE. A worthy man of Paris town, Came to the bishop there; His face, o'erlanded with dismay, Detrayed a fixed despair. "Father," said he, "a sinner vile Am I against my will; Each hour I humbly pray for faith, But am a doubter still. "Sure, were I not despised of God, He would not leave me so, To struggle thus, in constant strife, Against the deadly foe." The bishop to his sorrowing son Thus spoke a kind relief: "The king of France has castles twain; To each he sends a chief. "There's Montelhery, far inland, That stands in place secure; While La Rochelle, upon the coast, Doth seiges oft endure. "Now for these castles—both preserved— First in his prince's love, Shall Montelhery's chief be placed, Or La Rochelle's above!" "Oh, doubtless, sir," the sinner cried, "That king will love the most The man whose task was hard, to keep His castle on the coast!" "Son," said the bishop, "thou art right; Apply this reasoning well; My heart is Montelhery fort, And thine is La Rochelle!" The Dome of the Capitol. The dome of the capitol: Washington is the most ambitious structure in America. It is 108 feet higher than the Washington Monument in Baltimore, sixty-eight feet higher than Bunker Hill, and twenty-three feet higher than Trinity church tower at New York. It is the only considerable dome of iron in the world. It is a vast hollow sphere of iron, weighing eight thousand pounds. How much is that? More than 4,000 tons, or about the weight of 70,000 full grown people, or equal to 1,000 ington is the most ambitious structure in America. More than 4,000 tons, or about the weight of 70,000 full grown people, or equal to 1,000 laden coal cars, which holding four tons each would reach two miles and a half. Directly over your head is a figure in bronze, "America," weighing 14,985 pounds. The pressure of the iron dome upon its piers and pillars is 13,577 pounds to the square foot. St. Peter presses nearly 20,000 pounds more to the square foot, and St. Genevive, at Paris, 66,000 pounds more. It would require to crush the supporters of our dome a pressure of 557,270 pounds to the square foot. The cost was about $1,000,000. The new wings cost $6,500,000. The architect has a plan for rebuilding the old central park of the Capitol and enlarging the park will cost about $3,200,000. We give below a copy of a note that was sent to a writer, of the New York Commercial Advertiser, to attend a raffle, &c: New York, Feb. 1872. CHEMICAL CHANGES—Linen can be made into sugar; sugar into alcohol and carbonic acid; alcohol into other and water. Sugar can also be converted into oxalic acid, and likewise into pure charcoal and water. Alcohol will readily change into acetic acid or to vinegar; coal tar is transformed into dyes that surpass the Tyrian purple of old. Starch may be transmuted into gum, alcohol, sugar, vinegar, or oxalic acid; and these are but a few of the magical changes which modern chemical science has made "familiar as household words." There is a rich girl in Louisville, Kentucky, who is as much troubled with suitors as was Penelope. She however, gets rid of them in a way the wife of Ulysses never dreamed of. When one offers himself whose affection she has reason to think is centered upon her coffers and not upon herself, she begins to fire at him with a six shooter, telling him that if he is a true lover he will prefer to die at her hand than to live to offer his to some one else. So ar, no one has "preferred." MERCHANDISE. OLDEST BUSINESS HOUSE IN ANAHEIM. BERGER & CO.
