Southern Californian. SATURDAY MARCH 23 1872 Grafting the Grape. We have promised to give some ideas about grafting grape vines; The policy of grafting vineyards of poor fruit to better sorts instead of rooting the old vines out and planting new ones, has been established beyond a question. The best time and methods for grafting is the only information generally required on this subject. The best time is when the buds are opening into leaf. This is generally some time in April. As the season is this year very early, perhaps the last part of this month will be the best time. We have known vines to be grafted when the buds were fairly opened into leaf, with as good success as at any previous time. On account of the liability of the vines to sucker below the scion or graft it is always best to graft below the ground, which will in most cases prevent such sprouting. And if the grafting is 6 or 8 inches below the surface, roots will often spring from the scion which is in every case desirable. Hence, it is best to remove the earth about the stalk some eight inches deep and to saw the stalk some six inches below the level of the soil face. Several different tools have been used to make the spilt or cut in which to insert the scion, as the vine does not generally split straight. Some use a double bladed saw which takes out a thin cut in which to fit the scion. The most common way is to make a straight split with an from the scion which is in every case desirable. Hence, it is best to remove the earth about the stalk some eight inches deep and to saw the stalk some six inches below the level of the surface. Several different tools have been used to make the spilt or cut in which to insert the scion, as the vine does not generally split straight. Some use a double bladed saw which takes out a thin cut in which to fit the scion. The most common way is to make a straight split with an ordinary fine saw, then use the wedge as in common split grafting, and where one has but a few to do, this is a very practicable way. Before inserting the scion, the edges of the sawed split must be smoothly shaved with a keen knife. The scions should be made from strong well ripened growth. The best for cuttings to plant, are the best for scions. The scion should be cut to fit the slit as nicely as possible, and be firmly inserted. A bud, shouldn’t always govern the wedging of the scion cut so that the lower bud will be even with the shoulder as it will granulate sooner and be more likely to throw out roots. Mr. Geo. G. Briggs, of Oakland, a gentleman of much experience who has converted several wine and mission grape vineyards into useful and valuable table and raisin vineyards by grafting—uses a hook-shaped implement that cuts a smooth slit into one side of the stalk. It has a shaped point, and by making two cuts forms a dovetail in which the scion can be fitted with precision and strength without spitting the stalk at all. By his method of grafting, three men can graft 1,000 vines or one acre daily: The first man digs away the earth and saws off the vines about 8 inches below the surface. He is followed by the grafter, who makes the dovetail slit and shaves the scion on three sides so as to accurately fit into its place. The last man applies melted wax with a brush or paddle from a kettle which sets on a portable stove, so as to keep uniformly warm and pliable, and then brings the earth about the scion, leaving one or two buds about the surface. Mr. B seldom loses a graft. Vines 6 years old or upwards, will, when thus treated, produce one ton of fruit the first season; the second year, about three tons, and after that a fall crop annually. There is no mystery about grafting the grape so as to make it live and do well. Only a few principles need to be comprehended and observed. If grafted too early in the Spring, the The new territory of Ojibway which it is proposed to set off in the northern part of Dakota, will contain about 74,000 square miles, being nearly one-half the present area of Dakota. It contains a large area of fertile and well watered lands, but its inhabitants consist, as yet, almost entirely of Indians.
