Sudden Death.—Mr. Emil Wittig, a German, died some time during the night between Saturday and Sunday, the 16th and 17th inst., at the residence of Mr. A. Schenck, corner of Center and East streets. Mr. W. had been an invalid ever since his arrival here, some twenty months ago. He formerly resided at Valparaiso, South America, but left that city for his health, and went to San Francisco. He subsequently came to Los Angeles and thence to this place, where he has lived with Mr. Schenck. He appeared in usual health on Saturday but was found dead in his bed on Sunday morning. He had the consumption, but it is thought that an affection of the heart was the more immediate cause of death. He left no relatives here, but is believed to have a brother in Davenport, Iowa. OLDEN happy to sta quently came to Los Angeles and thence to this place, where he has lived with Mr. Schenck. He appeared in usual health on Saturday but was found dead in his bed on Sunday morning. He had the consumption, but it is thought that an affection of the heart was the more immediate cause of death. He left no relatives here, but is believed to have a brother in Davenport, Iowa. He was a rope-maker by trade. He was a quiet, unassuming man, of gentlemanly deportment, and kind, and courteous demeanor, who won the friendship and respect of all who knew him. Acknowledgment.—The position of a country editor is an enviable one indeed, when surrounded by the pleasant associations which our bean-tiful town affords; and blessed with such kind and appreciative friendship as the Southern Californian enjoys. Mrs. M. Luedke has sent us an offering that is tempting enough to turn the head of any one who loves good things, and we have a very strong weakness in that way. It is a large basket full of the finest of semi-tropical dried fruits. Raisins, figs, peaches and apples, beautiful to the eye and exceedingly pleasant to the taste. An elegant boquet, composed of the most beautiful flowers, and artistically arranged, accompanies the fruit. The gift of Miss Luedke. Many thanks. We Rise To Explain.—We had a toothache this week and found it a relief to tie up our jaw in a handkerchief to keep the cold air from striking it. This was all well enough but we are grieved to observe that our position has been misconstrued by some invidious persons, who persist in asking us if we have "had a head put on us." Now we desire to notify all whom it may concern that we have not had a head put on us, and furthermore, that we can punch the upper story of any misguided individual who has the temerity to propound that conundrum again. "Shoo Fly!" by some invidious persons, who persist in asking us if we have "had a head put on us." Now we desire to notify all whom it may concern that we have not had a head put on us, and furthermore, that we can punch the upper story of any misguided individual who has the temerity to propound that conundrum again. "Shoo Fly!" RESTAURANT.—The long talk of new restaurant is at length to become a reality. Mr. Peter Richards informs us that, in company with Mr. Marcovich, he expects to open a fine new restaurant, where fresh oysters and ice cream will be furnished, within three or four weeks from date, in the building adjoining Enterprise Hall, on Los Angeles street. Mr. Marcovich goes to San Francisco on Monday next to purchase supplies. VIEWS OF THE RIOT.—Messrs Flander & Godfrey, of the splendid new Sunbeam Gallery, Los Angeles, have favored us with two large photographic views of the scenes of the great Chinese riot. These gentlemen have on hand a beautiful collection of stereoscopic views of scenery in this county, which meet with ready sale to travelers who visit Los Angeles. They form beautiful and acceptable presents to friends in other states. PERSONAL.—Friend Lawrence, of the Star, paid us a shit Saturday last on the occasion of the Firemen's Ball. HOW IT AFFECTED US.—We learn that when the news reached San Francisco of the beaching of two of the lighters at Anaheim Landing the N.P.T.Co. immediately refused to receive freight for that point, not knowing whether they could discharge it. Our fellow citizen, Phil Davis, Esq., was in the city purchasing a large new stock for his establishment here, but was unable to ship it until he telegraphed to Anaheim and received the assurance that the lighter Company were prepared to discharge freight as usual. EXHIBITION THIS EVENING.—Mr. A. Montargis's Exhibition of Living Wonders arrived in town yesterday and will show this evening at Enterprise Hall. Doors open at 7 o'clock, performance to commence at 8. The performance will consist of the exhibition of the Bearded Lady, the Circassian Girl, the One-armed Violinist, and a performance of Legerdemain. The best of music in connection with the performance. Admission 50 cents, front seats 75 cents, children half price. For one night only. RAIN.—A fine little rain, as well as some hail, fell Monday night. The next day at about 11 o'clock, quite a smart shower as well as a fierce hail storm visited Los Angeles, and we are told the landing also, but did not come here. Made Filed. Jacob Keller, st. ax., to Richard Heimann and Oscar George, a vineyard lot in the city of Anaheim containing 20 4-10th acres, reserving two building lots, for $10,000. William M. Bailey to John M. Bush; a one-fifth interest in a tract of 150 acres of the rancho de Santiago, for $300. Wm. H. Spurgeon to George A. Bemiss, lot in the town of Santa Ana for $250. Lorling W. Kirby to Cyras B. Rawson, portion of the Rancho Las Bolsas, for $1,500. Alfred Robinson, trustee, to Lorling W. Kirby, portion of the Rancho Las Bolsas, for $1,000. Jose S.
