Southern Californian. SATURDAY, MARCH 16, 1872. Productions of California. Our horticulture, says the Alta, combines the fruits of the temperate and tropical zones. Our wheat ripens in the shadow of the palm tree; the orange and the persimmons grow side by side. We have 2,550,000 trees of the apple kind (including pears and quinces), 870,000 of the peach kind (including apricots and nectarines), 211,000 prunes and plums. 47,000 orange and lemon, 45,000 fig, 83,000 almond and walnut, and 100,000 cherry, 29,000 olive trees and 29,000,000 grape vines. The pomegranate, nopal, and citron thrive but are not numerous enough to deserve counting; the banana, plantain, guava, chirimoya, cocoa palm and pine-apple are growing but their profitable or extensive cultivation in the open air is yet doubtful. Tea, coffee, and African sugar cane can be grown. Many delicate tropical and semi-tropical ornamental trees, and shrubs adorn our gardens. The geraniums, fuschias and finer varieties of the rose, the numerous Australian acacias and Eucalypti with their graceful foliage, the heliotrope, the Indian-rubber plant, the floripendio, magnolia, camellia, and passion flower live through our Winters in open air. She is certainly dressed for a country dinner party, in an orthodox old fashioned black silk dress, and one is somehow always looking for her to pull out a half-finished gray stocking of great proportions unroll it, stick a knitting-needle in her hair and fall to counting stitches. She has a pleasant, motherly way of speaking, and a wide unhandsome mouth, with which to utter the thoughts that arise in her. Her face is very red, the effects of turkey, coffee and oysters, and her hair is combed smooth and shining, with a knot and a fall behind the ears, very common a few years ago, but very ugly now." RAMIE CULTURE.—Assemblyman Crane has introduced a bill in the Legislature to encourage the culture of Ramie in this State. The following premiums are offered by the terms of the bill: To the person or firm producing within the State the first 10,000 pounds of Ramie, dressed ready for the bleaching process and in good marketable condition, the sum of $3,000; and to the person or firm producing within the State the first 2,000 pounds of Ramie, dressed ready for the bleaching process and in good marketable condition, the sum of $2,000; but no person or firm shall have any interest or benefit, or receive any money, directly or indirectly, from more than one of the premiums above recited. GUN COTTON.—Gun-cotton is now manufactured in England to an amount exceeding 100 tons per annum. The cotton fibre is reduced to a pulp, as in paper making, in which condition the excess of acids is readily removed. The pulp is compressed into discs, under a pressure of eighteen tons to the inch, and then dried. These discs are 7-8ths inch to 7 inches in diameter, and 1-2 inch to 2 inches thick. In the open air this compressed cotton burns intense, but without explosion; but when properly exploded under close confinement, its strength is from two to five times that of the same weight of gun-powder. If accidentally wetted, this form of gun-cotton can be redried by exposure to the sun, or even by a gentle heat, without risk of explosion or deterioration. Stokes in Prison.—A New York letter writer thus sketches Fish's murderer, as seen in the Tombs: Stokes rests his curled head on lace bordered pillows. The odor of his cell penetrates the entire Tombs: He orders in perfumes by the box and every time the soup and hash for the common criminals is totted past his door he breaks a bottle of musk. In a crimson-faced dressing-gown, embroidered slippers and silk socks, he smokes the time away, altogether the gayest bit of a criminal that ever lodged in murderers' row. A soft answer may turn away wrath, but it can't prevent judgment by dalamit, if it is not filed within the statutory number of days. An item in a lawyer's bill to his client ran thus: "To lying awake at night thinking over your case, forty-five dollars." Makers. J. BULLIVAN. BULLIVAN. HS. and GON-MAKERS. Longburger & Co.'s, HEIM.
