Southern California. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 1872. At Santa Barbara a gallon of oil is made from eight gallons of olive and one tree there, when ten years old, produced sixty gallons of olives. Mr. Mayhew, of that place, thinks it safe to count on a net annual yield of two hundred and forty dollars per acre from an olive orchard ten years old, and that the cultivation of the tree would be profitable for fuel, so rapid is its growth. He thus communicates some of his experience to the Santa Barbara Press. I then obtained five hundred cuttings, from one inch to three inches long. In February, 1868, I put them in the ground so that their ends were little above the natural level of the ground, and covered them by making a little mound. About one half of them started that spring, and are now from ten thirteen feet high, and spread about seven feet, the trunk of the main stock being from two to four inches through. Some of the cuttings lay dormant through one season, and started about one year from the time they were planted, and a few sprouted even two years from the time of planting, which are doing well. The cultivation of the olive has been attracting much attention late-ly in Australia, where the oil of home productions finds a ready sale at $3 per gallon. In California, something that is supposed to be the best quality of olive oil retails at about $5 per gallon, but the purity of it is subject to grave doubt. The olive tree is productive in only a few small districts, and its cultivation, when properly managed, in those districts, cannot be unprofitable until the oil loses the credit which it now has throughout the world, of being unequaled for table use. Our largest olive orchards in California are not yet in full bearing, and neither oil nor pickled olives of domestic production are, so far as we know, obtainable in our city. The different varieties of the olive have not, we think, been studied in our State. Baron Von Mueller, Superintendent of the Botanical Gardens at Melbourne, recommends the following varieties: 1. Verdale.—Available as a good table oil, as well as for green conserve. This, and the next following, are early and abundant bearers. 2. Blanquet.—Adapted for day ground. The oil is of a particular sweet, delicate taste, and more palath than other kinds, but does not keep so long. This and the Verdale produce the fruit on low-growing branches, so as to be accessible for hand-picking. 3. Boubuettiar.—for superior oil. 4. Redoumana.—Eligible for colder regions; produces table oil; and is also esteemed for conserves. Some other kinds are locally available, among them the Olivier de Grasse, the latter yielding an execellent table oil, and oil for perfumery; but the plant is high of growth, and the gathering of the fruit more expense; it is of a weeping habit.—Alta. The Last of Fort Smith. Last Saturday, December 30th, the last day but one in the year of our Lord, 1871, witnessed the transfer, from military to civil authority, of what was known for almost half a century as Fort Smith. On that day Col. G. W. Dustin, Qr. Mr. Agent U.S. Army, turned over to Col. On that day Col. G. W. Dustin, Qr. Mr. Agent U.S. Army, turned over to Col. Logan II Roots, U.S. Marshall, the control of the Government reserve near this place, comprising about 800 acres of very valuable land immediately contiguous to the business portion of this city, with all its buildings, improvements etc. The fort, so called, though it never was a fort, in the proper sense of the word, was established some 40 or 50 years ago, on the grounds now occupied by the Catholic Seminary, and was then called Fort Belknap, in honor of the late General Belknap, father of the present Secretary of War. Some years afterwards those grounds were sold and the fort was established at the mouth of Poteau river, at the foot of what is now one of the finest avenues and business streets in the West. In 1841 the present fort was built, consisting of a low, massive looking wall of granite, more ornamental than other walls making the garrison proper, which consisted of two very fine blocks of brick building used as officers' quarters, two massive twostory rock buildings used respectively as quartermaster and commisary buildings, one large and commodious house for soldiers' quarters, beside several smaller ones. The first two, elegant and roomy buildings, burned down, one in 1865, the other in 1869. The reserve will probably soon be sold, under the direction of the Secretary of the Interior. As the land is absolutely necessary for the extension of the town, which has grown up around it, the sooner it done the better.—Fort Smith, (Ark.) New Era.
