St. VALENTINE'S DAY.—Wednesday next, 14th inst., will be the day for sending valentines. This being leap year, the fair sex will doubtless avail themselves of the opportunity of sending tender love missives to our bashful young men. In this connection, we beg leave to present the following statute, in such cases made and provided, from the old Saxon code: "Albeit, as often as leape yearre doothe occurre, the women holdeth prerogative over the menne in matters of courtshippe, love and matrimonie; so that when the ladye proposeth it shall not be lawful for the manno to say nae, but shall entertainne proposall in all gude courtesie." This Co. is governed by the beneficent “Nan: forfeiture law” of Massachusetts which provides that “No policy of Insurance on life shall be forfeited or become void by the non payment of premium thereon.” Under this law the payment of one annual premium continues the policy in force 2 years and 3 days, and so on in proportion. The Co., is fortunate in being represented at Los Angeles by no experienced and popular agent as Mr. Carlin. OIL WELL.—About four years ago Postmaster Clark of this city, and a party of prospectors, found a small spring of petroleum at San Fernando.
