THE BOLSAS.
Almost every other community in the county has been better written up than this, which has been growing quietly, all by herself, without making any fuss about it, until she has attained astonishing proportions. The settlement (commonly known as the “Sears Settlement”) is about 2 miles by 1¼ in extent and already contains 14 families.
ELECTION OF DELEGATES
According to announcement, a meeting was held on Monday evening last at Justice Davis’s office to elect Delegates to represent Anaheim in the R. R. convention to be held here to-day On motion, S. J. Davis, was., named as chairman, and Chas. A. Gardner Secretary. Judge Davis stated the object of the meeting, and election of Delegates being then proceeded to, John Fischer, Max Strobel and Win. R. Olden were elected as such Delegates. The Delegates elected were then requested to express their opinion in regard to the business of the convention and the policy most beneficial to Anaheim to be pursued at such Convention. Mr. Strobel then expressed himself opposed to the giving of a subsidy to to any Company. Mr. Fischer agreed with the speaker and such indeed seemed to be the general sense of the meeting. After some general discussion the meeting adjourned.
Tustin City — This flourishing town still continues to grow and thrive. Mr. Tustin informs us that he sold 13 town lots last week and donated 12 more to families settling there. The “Tustin City Union Sabbath School” has just been organised and meets regularly at the Union school-house. Mr. Harris from Petaluma is just building. Rev. Mr. Leiby from San Bernardino moved down to Tustin City this week, having already erected a dwelling there.
There are 7 houses now erected including the hotel and school house. The hotel built by Mr. T. M Rikort is about ready to open.
THE BOLSAS.
Almost every other community in the county has been better written up than this, which has been growing quietly, all by herself, without making any fuss about it, until she has attained astonishing proportions. The settlement (commonly known as the "Sears Settlement") is about 2 miles by 1¼ in extent and already contains 14 families and 22 voters. Has bosides an excellent public school with about 40 scholars There are at present about 500 acres under cultivation. A blacksmith and wagon maker would find a good opening there as one is much needed. We are told also that there is good water power for a mill, which a good many can have on application. Some of the best crops in the county have been raised in the Bolsas.
KIND REMEMBRANCE.—We beg to acknowledge receipt of an elegant little lunch, which was most unexpectedly brought to our office while we were working off the Gazette last week. It went far to comfort and sustain our inner man, and filled us with admiration of the gentle, thoughtful heart of woman to whose kindness, of course, we were indebted for the surprise.
SADDLE STOLEN — A new saddle was stolen last week from the residence of Mr. Pedro Blanco, on Center street.
THE CIRCUS.—The exhibition of the New York Mammoth Circus was well attended here on Saturday evening 11th inst., and was an excellent performance. The horizontal-bar, the trained horses, Leroy's riding and the Joint High Commission burlesque, are especially worthy of notice.
A PUFF.—And a very pleasant one can be had by smoking one of Clark's good cigars.
SOWING GRAIN.—Farmers have already commenced sowing grain for winter crops.
CHILDREN'S CONCERT.—We hope the juveniles will be encouraged in their efforts on Thursday evening next. They present a good programme which will been organised and meets regularly at the Union school-house. Mr. Harris from Petaluma is just building. Rev. Mr. Leiby from San Bernardino moved down to Tustin City this week, having already erected a dwelling there.
There are 7 houses now erected including the hotel and school house. The hotel built by Mr. T. M Rikort is about ready to open.
The Pacific Mail steamers offer to call at San Diego if $1,000 per voyage is guaranteed to them. The Union thinks it cannot be done.
It was our good fortune to hear an excellent sermon last Sabbath by Rev. Mr. Webber. Those of us who attend divine service but seldom too little realize the great beauty and promise of those words;
"They that trust in the Lord shall be as Mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth forever.
As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the Lord is round about his people henceforth even forever."
The San Diego Union's correspondent, Mr. Young, writes up Anaheim quite fully in his letters to that journal
Chicago calls for 25,000 chinamen to work for 5 years.
Thirty three whaling ships have been lately wrecked in the Polar Seas.
To BE RETURNED.—It appears that the fire engine which lately arrived from San Francisco, will be returned, not coming up with requirements when tested News
The Rain.
That we have all been talking about so long, has come at last. We felt sure of it all the while; for we saw one man who is Olden-ough to know, carrying tarpaulin on his hat-ches; and we heard another, a prominent sheep owner at Os Nietos, who lives very near to Col. Sanford's, offer to gamble his little flock of 2000 on the proposition that it would raiu, and we know that no man would risk so much mutton on an uncertainty.
Now it has come and we are very thankful indeed. It is to us a new life and a new era of progress; a blessed
They present a good programme which will doubtless be amusing and instructive.
Change of Firm.—Mr. Chas Wille has bought out the interest of his late partner Mr. Rekenboil in the coopering business and will conduct the same alone.
Fischer's Hotel.—Mr. Fischer expects so occupy his new hotel in about a month.
More Rain.—Another considerable shower of rain fell on Saturday last causing all to look glad and feel hopeful of a wet season.
The West.—A fine large 16 page, monthly paper of this name is at hand. It is published at San Francisco by the "Dial Publishing Co." at $1. per year. Its pages are filled with choice and valuable original matter. Success to it.
The Weekly Alta.—Perhaps the largest weekly in the state, is this immense journal with its 64 columns of reading matter. It is a perfect compendium of passing events, a complete history of the times.
We have received a pamphlet of 48 pp. entitled "The Railroad system of California; Oakland and vicinity; State University, etc. It contains two maps; one entitled "Britton and Rey's reduced Map of the State of California," and the other "E.C. Sessions Map of Oakland and Brooklyn." It is a valuable publication, both for its maps and the information furnished.
In Lincoln county, Nevada, there is a huge mountain of rock salt, so completely transparent that, so it is asserted the Mormons of St. George, and other settlements in Utah, use it for window panes. The formation is such, that it can be split out in flakes of almost any desired thickness, and when placed in windows, the light reflected is similar to that from the ordinary frosted glass.
Owing to the fact that but little rain falls in that section, this chyrstalized salt is found to be an excellent substitute for glass. News.
Frentice Malford is going on a three year voyage round the world, to lecture on California.
