Postal Agent About: With the exceedingly regular and prompt stage line which carries the mail between this city and San Francisco, it seems as though letters and newspapers from the latter city ought to be as exact and envirring as clock work in their transmission to us but such unfortunately is not the case. The stage time is only 2½ days through, and transient papers are all the way from 4 to 10 days in coming. The packages of San Francisco dallies to the news agent at this place, carefully put up and having printed labels fail at least every other day to arrive on time, and come in lots, of 2 or 3 days at a time. Somebody fails to do their duty in the premises and the matter needs the attention of the Postal Agent. PERSONAL—Mr. John Fischer, the popular host of the Planter's House, returned from San Francisco on Monday last, and was greeted in the waiting by a moonlight coronade, from the Anheim brass band. Mr. F. reports business as improving at San Francisco, except the drawback to the insurance interests caused by the Chicago fire. We learn that Mr. Ed. Polhemus is expected to return from San Diego county next week. Rev. L. P. Webber returned from San Francisco on Monday last, bringing with him two new settlers for Westminster. Meers S. Goldstein and Gas, Davis are absent on a visit to San Francisco. Mr. Geo. C. Knox has been restricting at San-Bernardino this week. Slavery has been abolished in Brazil Belfast, Ireland, gave $15,000 to the Chicago fund. Rise in Coffee. Coffee has advanced 3½ cents per lb at San Francisco within a week, owing to heavy orders from St. Louis and Salt Lake. The port of Magdalena Bay, Lower California, will be closed from December 31st. The city debt of New York is $141,470,000. Hotel Dedication. Kroeger's Hotel was on Saturday evening last, appropriately dedicated to the cause of hospitality by the lessee, Mr. Henry Bremmerman. The building was ornamented with the national flag and a large wreath and music furnished by the Anaheim brass band. An excellent supper was provided of which a large company partook and all enjoyed a pleasant evening's entertainment. New Photographer —Mr. S. W. Watrous, from San Bernardino, has succeeded Mr. Vale in the photographic business at this place, and may be found at the old stand on Los Angeles street. Religious —Rev. L. P. Pupils received from 5 to 14 years of age. Terms, including board and washing, $20 per month. Halter Lost —The well known white horse that belongs and appertains unto the Gazette establishment, dragged anchor on Sunday night last, drifted away from his moorings, and evidently fell into bad company somewhere, for when found he had lost from his head an elc. We learn that Mr. Ed. Polhemus is expected to return from San Diego county next week. Rev. L. P. Webber returned from San Francisco on Monday last, bringing with him two new settlers for Westminster. Messrs S. Goldstein and Gas, Davis are absent on a visit to San Francisco. Mr. Geo. C. Knox has been rusticating at San-Bernardino this week. Mr. W. The building is 20 by 42 in size and is quite a notable addition to that part of the city. Special Council Meeting —A special meeting of the Common Council will be held at 8 o'clock this afternoon to deliberate upon certain new ordinances which are under consideration. Jack Frost --This gentleman left his card lately on the Bolsas, in the Williams settlement, and at various other places. Fair Items. —No smoking is to be allowed on the Fair Grounds at Los Angeles during the coming fair. Theo Reiser of this city has entered a two year old filly. A Tarantula has been found in an office in Downey's block, Los Angeles. The Monterey Republican has suspended publication. Failed to Connect --The morning papers from Los Angeles failed to arrive on Saturday last. Eighty-nine newspapers, including dailies, weeklies and monthlylies, were destroyed by the Chicago fire. The New Bank. We are reliably informed that the new bank of Mr Temple; in this city, will commence operations on the 1st of November next.-Star HALTER LOST — The well known white horse that belongs and appertains unto the Gazette establishment, dragged anchor on Sunday night last, drifted away from his moorings, and evidently fell into bad company somewhere. For when found he had lost from his head an elegant headstall which was the handiwork of friend Jander, and which was a credit to its maker and ornament to the horse. And now we are unhappy and will not be consorted, unless the honest man who took that headstall shall return the same to this office, and receive our blessing. RAIN. The pleasant sound of rain, patterning musically upon the roof, greeted our ears on Sunday last. Every body looked up to see it, and opened his mouth and tasted it, to see if it was real gennine wet rain and no humbug; and when a drop fell in his eye, and another took the starch out of his shirt-collar, he was satisfied and was happy. The tail continued for about an hour, and wet the dust very well, making everything cool, clear, bright and pleasant. "Do so some more"! BALL AT GALLATIN. Mr. Leonidas Bales will give a ball and general house warming on Monday evening 30th inst at the house of Mr. W. W. Standiflor merchant at Gallatin, and the proposals are to be applied to the benefit of the new school house at that place. Go and enjoy yourself and assist a good cause. team Fire Engine. The Star says a steam fire engine is expected in city to-day. Eighty-nine newspapers, including dailies, weeklies and monthlys, were destroyed by the Chicago fire. THE NEW BANK. We are reliably informed that the new bank of Mr Temple, in this city, will commence operations on the 1st of November next. A new style of revenue stamps has been issued. Mr. Kern County Weekly Courier! Please take notice that "Oivia" was written by Edward Pollock, and not by Joaquin Miller, to whom you erroneously give credit. Yours Truly. NEW PAPER. The Deutsch-Amerikanische Wein Zeitung, a beautifully printed 8 page paper in the German Language has come to hand. It is published by J. A. Schmidt, New York and is devoted, we believe to the wine interest. "The Drum Major." — This is the title of a new comic song of the Emerson Minstrels, which has just been published by M.
