Walnut Trees—Transplanting Of.
At almost any season of the year, but especially soon after the putting forth of leaves in the spring, the most casual observer will not fail to see that the extremities of many of the branches of the walnut trees are dead. For years I have been convinced that the cause of this condition of the trees was the cutting off or the injury done to the tap root of the tree at the time of transplanting. A fact has come to my knowledge within the past few days which strengthens my belief. The gardener of a resident of this county planted walnuts for a nursery; when the trees were one year old they were still taken up; the tap root taken off, and then replanted in a nursery, where they were carefully nursed and tended until they were of sufficient age and size to plant out in the field. They have at this time been in bearing a few years, but are dying from some unknown cause. A black rot seizing the stems of the trees at the surface of the ground. From inquiries respecting the soil and cultivation, I have no doubt that the death of the trees is owing to the cutting off of the tap root. It is my opinion that one walnut tree grown from the seed planted in the place where the tree will remain, is worth more than ten trees transplanted after they have had two years growth. J.J. WARNER in the Los Angeles Star:
