SEPTEMBER 2, 1871
Eloquence of Written Words.
The following was written many years ago by Washington Wright, then editor of the Sacramento Age, upon the occasion of the first planting of the American Flag on Cape Mendocino, who put it there?—The American flag has been placed at the top of a tall tree or Cape Mendocino. This is the most westerly point in the Republic; its rough and mountainous front rises haughtily out of the sea, and away down at its base the waves make foam, and roar, and strike in direst anger the great and unchangeable rocks. Gales whirling up the coast or dashing along from Oregon, lodge with the grand family of trees whose leaves are never still at the green summit of the Cape. Who put the starry flag upon that lotty tree? Who so cognizant of sublimity as to elime above the nation's land—verge and decorate the aerial desert there with his country's glorious sign and gladdening emblem? Let him be praised with those who have patriotic inspiration in the hour of peace, and advance to difficult distances—the standard of their native land. Full in the presence of all nations that flag now waves—its trembling shadow is on all the seas!
But it has had the strangest of adventures. It was borne near to the mysterious sources of the Nile, with but one freeman to protect it, and in the cloudy solitudes of highest mountains its sacred threads have been apportioned to resistless storms. It was left alone on one of nature's towers reared in the new Antarctic continent, and within its folds have been gathered the glittering frosts where eternal winter builds huge icebergs round the northern pole.
