THE OVERLAND MONTHLY.—This favorite home magazine is at hand for September. We are proud of it as a California production and enjoy reading it much better from the fact that its articles are all complete in each number. The publishers (John H. Carmany & Co., San Francisco) say that in future issues they intend to illustrate such articles "as will have special interest for readers on both sides of the continent."
STATE FAIR.—We acknowledge receipt of a complimentary season ticket to the California State Fair for which kind remembrance the gentlemanly officers of the State Board of Agriculture have our thanks, and we only regret that our remote location will probably prevent our attending. The coming fair commences on the 18th and ends on the 25d inst. and it should be well patronized, to further the noble ends of the association having it in charge.
BAD BOYS.—Our attention has been called to the persecution of Chinamen by rowdy boys of this place who seem to emulate the unenviable notoriety of San Francisco roughs. Our officials would confer a favor upon the comu-

Our present Sheriff announces itself as a candidate for re-election. Burns has resided a long time county and has filled many imp offices. That he has satisfactorily charged their several duties is attested by the fact that the people have expiration of each term promoted to a still higher position.

Bad Boys.—Our attention has been called to the persecution of Chinamen by rowdy boys of this place who seem to emulate the unenviable notoriety of San Francisco roughs. Our officials would confer a favor upon the community as well as a lasting benefit upon the boys themselves by promptly arresting the perpetrators of such unmanly outrages.
A third aspirant has appeared for the Owens River trade. Wynema, a new shipping point on the coast some 16 miles below San Buenaventura, puts in her claims and alleges that the road from that point is better than any other. The new rival has already a fine wharf and an artesian well that is said to flow water enough to run a mill.
We clip the following from the Los Angeles News of the 20th alt:
Pala Mission, August 27 via Las Foyres.—Capt Brown, with Mr. M. A. Forster as interpreter, arrived at Pala 22nd last, with a small body of troops for the purpose of protecting Manucheito. The present Indian Chief, appointed by Government, from Olegario and his party, who have appointed him chief in opposition to Manucheito. Capt Brown immediately after arriving, sent a message to Olegario, requesting an interview which Olegario refused. A similar message was sent on the 23d instant when Olegario promised to meet Capt Brown at Pala the following day. The delay was supposed to be for the purpose of collecting his forces. A meeting was effected on the 25th, when Olegario appeared with a large body of Indians, refusing to submit to the authority of Capt Brown or Manucheito. Olegario and five other chiefs have left where and for what objects is not known, but supposed to be to collect their forces. Capt Brown and the troops remain in Pala to protect Manucheito and the peaceable Indians, and awaiting further orders and assistance.

We are pleased to find in the Guardian evidence of the successful ministration at that place of Rev. Josiah Bates, formerly of Anaheim. A new Congregational church is to be erected there toward which $750 has already been subscribed.
St. Vincent College.—Those having youth to instruct will be interested in the fact that this old established institution of learning is now empowered to confer degrees and can thus offer all the advantages of its eastern rivals. It has stood well the test of time and gains in good will as it grows under.
The steamship Lodono stranded on the Florida coast on the 27th ult. and the Capt. and twenty of the crew were lost.
Visitors.—Sheriff Burns, candidate for re-election, and Dr. V. Geleich candidate for county Coroner visited Anaheim this week.
The Terrestrial Dial Between Prussia and France is over, but thousands of battles between Dr. Walker’s Vinegar Britters and dyepalms and liver complaint are now going on in every state of the Union. The issue of such contests is now for one moment in doubt. The conflict may last longer in some cases than in others, but the Leading Vegetable Tortoise and Alternatives is the nineteenth century invariably triumphs.

For Justice Of The Peace.
The Judicial Election is still some distance off but it is not too early, to seek the best candidates for an office on which depends so much of the welfare and good order of the community. Mr. John W. Clark, whose announcement will be found elsewhere, is a gentleman of unspotted private character, and is eminently qualified for the position. He has gained a high reputation by the able manner in which he discharged the duties of the same office in Napa County and his election to the position here would insure us an able, honorable and conscientious Judge.
We have recently had the pleasure of an interview with Mr. A. E. Horton of San Diego whom we must regard as the most notable instance of a successful man that Southern California can furnish. He settled at San Diego about four years ago. Soon after his arrival the pueblo of Old San Diego sold at public auction eight hundred acres of land belonging to Mr. II. became the purchaser at less than fifty cents per acre. His purchase was derided as "tools investment" but he laid out a town; the present city of San Diego was soon built thereon, and now the happy owner realizes not less than $1,500,000 from his sagacious venture. Mr. Horton has done much for the country by his enterprise and has lately been nominated for the office of State Senator from the counties of San Diego and San Bernardino. He is a man who furnishes his own ideas and acts upon them promptly.

The Democratic Meeting — Owing to the short notice given the Democrat speaking here on Friday evening 25th and was not as well attended as it would otherwise have been, but still, a very fair audience assembled at the speakers stand. Salutes were fired as usual upon such occasions. The meeting was called to order by J. J. Johnson Esq., of Santa Ana, who also introduced the various speakers to the assembly. John R. McConnell of Sacramento first spoke. His remarks were quite lengthy and consisted principally of an elaborate review of the trial question from the origin of that feature of government policy down through its various changes to the present time. He was followed by Judge O. Melvany of Los Angeles who briefly discussed the political situation as illustrated by the relations existing between the government and the people. Frank Truman Esq., of Los Angeles succeeded the judge upon the speakers stand and made some good hits which his audience applauded. C. E. Thom Esq., District Attorney of county closed the meeting by referring briefly to his participation in the measures for the incorporation of Anaheim.

This is a newspaper advertisement for storage services in Los Angeles. It offers a charge for storage by E. E. Hewitt, superintendent. The ad includes details about the location (San Francisco and San Diego) and the time frame (November 18th, 1830). It also mentions that the service will run regularly and provides contact information for further inquiries. The ad emphasizes the quality of the goods referred to by the business circulating it.
