Accepts the Darwinian Situation
Beecher accepts the Darwinian Genesis. In a sermon just made and printed in a New York paper, that Brooklyn divine is reported as saying: "Look at the havoc Geology has made. It completely upset the first chapter of Genesis. In so many days God created the earth. What did we do with this? Why we merely concluded to call-days periods of time, and Geology and the Bible walked hand in hand. Now we have come to Darwin; and have found our ancestors. (A general laugh all over the church.) Adam and Eve are getting to be unfashionable. Some folks don't know so much about the Garden of Eden as they thought they did! and they don't seem quite pleased about this discovery of their ancient relatives, and are trying to shake these things off. You can't rub this out, if it is true. You have got to make your interpretations of Scripture comfortable to nature. Scientific disclosures are the best illuminators that can be given to men. Nature makes commentators that stand. We may as well prepare ourselves to accept this theory of elimination—this growth from the animal to the spiritual; and I for one am already for it. The argument which affords the strongest proof of this theory is the essential pliancy and educability of man. He realizes that his way is upward and onward. To go up higher he must be educated—in other words he must advance from the animal to the spiritual. This is just the progress the Bible teaches us to expect."

OUR DRUG BUSINESS located in San Francisco, Cal. After our best wishes, and expressing our thanks for the liberal patronage we have received for more than twenty-one years, during which period we have been steadily engaged in the Drug business in California, we beg to say in consequence of the rapid growth of the Dr. Walker’s California Vinegar Bitters, now spread over the United States and countries far beyond, we are necessitated to devote our entire time to said business.
We are the Oldest Drug firm on the Pacific Coast and the only one continuous under the same proprietors since 1849, and have determined to sell our large, prosperous, and well established business on favorable terms.
