ANAHEIM GAZETTE. SATURDAY AUGUST 19, 1871. The Soledad Turnpike. A most important work for the welfare of this county is the above road which opens an easy way through the mountain range by the Soledad Pass. It is to be the means of saving to us the large and valuable trade of the Owens River country, which by the present travelled route is very likely to soon leave Los Angeles altogether for the easier road down the Santa Clara valley to another port of shipment. The turnpike grade is admirable and is described as "a scarcely perceptible ascent, clear to the summit." The most important consideration is the saving of forty miles in distance which this road effects. The road is being constructed under the supervision of Capt. Moore, to whose zeal and efficiency is, to a great extent, due the successful prosecution of the work thus far. The entire cost of a good broad turnpike over Soledad Pass is estimated at $50,000 and it is to the pecuniary interest of Los Angeles people to see that the enterprise is pushed forward to a speedy completion. Deeds Filed. C. Tustin et ux. to P. J. Schaffer two blocks in Tustin city, for $400, and one block for $100. W. Bradford to C. C. Breyfogle, lot in town of Santa Ana, for $100. A B. Chapman to P. J. Eastern papers brag of a day plays euchre. That's nothing, lots of overgrown men here when same thing and we don't take an in the fact either. Other people have their little time as well as ourselves. The follow from New Jersey: "What sort of son do you call this? First we dried up, then blown down, now being drowned out. What next? The "Moravia (Iowa) Vedette," contains a most kindly notice of Anabeim papers, which is appreciated by his distant collaborers. Thanks, friend Vedette, you are a faithful sentinel in the newspaper corps. The August number of the American Agriculturist is at hand. Orange Judd knows something about farming, and the fact sparkles out all over from the magnificent publication that is an enduring monument to his ability. Mr. Peel of Los Angeles, formerly agent of the William Taber, is endeavoring to get stock enough subscribed to purchase a steamer for opposition on the San Francisco route. The subscribers are to be free to purchase any ship that suits them, and select their own officers and managers. He says that his purpose is to get the name of every citizen in the country first, and then make up the amount needed in the cities. He is confident of success. Screw Loose. — Owing to somebody blunder we do not receive our exchange the San Diego Union, due from that city as formerly, but have wait for it to visit our county seat return after many days, in the Newern Mail. Wilt thou reason with offender, O benevolent Uncle Sam. Santa Ana. — Grasshoppers have most entirely disappeared from section of country. The artesian water is in a condition of statu quo; the paving a few days since struck a large of something which it could not penetrate, supposed to be quicksand, and was found necessary to re pipe the entire distance. The work will go on as soon as this is accomplished, and the borer expect to strike the desired way within twenty feet as the indication are good. The Pope writes to the Committee offering the title of Pins the Great and the Throne of Gold, that he refuses during his lifetime. The money-supplied for the throne will be used for exempting Seminarists from military service. San Bernardino coroner's juries go long ways in their verdicts. One recently found, not only that the deceased was killed by a certain person, but also that that certain person was guilty of murder in the first degree! Which is assuming dangerous powers. Hotel Matters — Mr Fischer informs us that the question of the insurance upon the late Planter's House has been settled and that he proceeds immediately to the erection of a new building upon the site of the old one, to be 72 feet front on each street, and two stories high. Hammes has suffered two visitations; first losing a valuable chess-table, and set of chessmen, and secondly, a couple of clocks, one of which was a valuable regulator and had several articles of value inside of it, all of which were carried off. Our citizens must watch their goods; thieves are here. HOUSE THIEVES RENDEZVOUS. — It seems certain, from many indications that there is and old and well established strong hold of horse thieves somewhere in the timber on the Bolsas ranchos in this township beyond the limits of the present white settlements. Horses have disappeared in that direction, beyond the ken of civilized men, but could be readily ransomed by a five dollar fee to a greaser. The officers of justice should see to it that this dun is ferreted out and broken up. TRANSPORTERS — Three men were committed to the County Jail, by Justice Davis on Monday last. The Markets.
