WOLLWEBER, SALE AND RETAIL DEALER IN What to Plant in Southern California. We shall never forget the look of profound astonishment an old gentleman from Ohio gave us when shown a piece of poorly improved land near Santa Barbara, valued at $100 per acre. He had spent nearly a lifetime making a farm, up near the lakes, and getting it well improved. He had been offered thirty dollars an acre for his farm, and came out to California to buy cheap lands for his toys. He thought five or ten dollars an acre a big price for that Santa Barbara land, and yet the owner had cleared a hundred dollars an acre on it the year before on a single crop; in fact, made more clear money in one season than our Ohio friend had made in a lifetime of hard work. The values of the nuts and olives are not given, but making a fair estimate for them, we have a grand total of about $4,000,000. Here is what the Signal says further: But invaluable as are our lands here for agricultural purposes, they are much more valuable for vineyards and semi-tropical fruits. They are entirely too valuable for farming, is the opinion expresed by all far-seeing persons well acquainted with the climate and soil. Every acre planted with English walnuts, olives, and that class of trees, would in a few years be worth ten or twenty times the present value of the land, and that without making its present value less for ordinary farming. —San Diego Union. The Years of Peter. "Non videbis annos Petri" was passed from mouth to mouth, for more than a thousand years. The tradition is, that St. Peter, the first Bishop of Rome, held the post for twenty-five years, and that no successor of his will occupy it for so long a time. In the early days sprang this saying, and the belief that it any Pope should complete the quarter of a century the church would fall. As time went on and various pontiffs almost reached the fatal term, but always died just before its expiration, the belief strengthened and expanded: at the beginning of the present century Pius VII., who is held as quite a saint, and hardly less a martyr because of the persecution he underwent from Napoleon the I., filled he chair for nearly twenty-four years, and beloved and revered as he was, an immense apprehension prevailed that if he reached the mystic "years of Peter," not only the Papacy ,but Rome itself, would perish in some tremendous cataclysm of nature or society. But like all the rest he died in time. Now again a Pope has approached the limit, and nearer than any ever did before. If Pius IX. lives until the 16th of June,他 will have CHINA IN A NUTSHELL—An English writer speaks of China as a country where the roses have no fragrance and the women no petticoats; where the laborer has no sabbath, and the magistrate no sense of honor; where the roads bear no vehicles and the ships no keels; where old men fly kites; where the needle points to the south, and the sign of being puzzled is to scratch the antipodes of the head; where the place of honor is on the left hand, and the seat of intellect is in the stomach; where to take off your hat is an insolent gesture, and to wear white garments is to put yourself in mourning; where there is a literature without an alphabet and a language without a grammar. An immense snake has been captured and killed in a pond at Providence, near Clarksville, Town. It was 32 feet in length, 6 feet in circumference, and its head and tail were tipped with red. A two-foot long apricot twig, from a tree in the orchard of C S Lowell between Sacramento and Stockton bears up it all apricots.
