ANAHEIM GAZETTE. SATURDAY, APRIL 8, 1871. Greasing Wagons. Greasing buggies and wagons is of more importance than some people imagine. Many a wheel is ruined by oiling too plentifully. A well made wheel will endure constant wear for ten to twenty years if care is taken to use the right kind and proper amount of oil; but if this matter is not attended to the wheel will be used up in five or six years, or may be sooner. Lard should never be used on a wagon; for it will penetrate the hub and work its way out round the tenons of the spokes and spoil the wheel. Caster oil is a good material for use on an iron axle: just oil enough should be applied to a spindle to give it a light coating; this is better than more, for the surplus put on will work out at the ends and be forced by the shoulders and nut into the hub around outside of the boxes. To oil an axletree, first wipe the spindle clean with a wet cloth with turpentine, if it won't wipe without it. On a buggy or carriage, wipe and clean off the back and front ends of the hubs and then apply a very small quantity of caster oil, or some especially prepared lubricator near the shoulders and point. LADIES SHOULD READ. - It is a great mistake in female education, to keep a young lady's time and attention devoted only to the fashionable literature of the day. If you would qualify her for conversation you must give her something to talk about; give her education in the actual world and its transpiring events. Urge her to read the newspapers, and become familiar with the present character and improvements of our race. History is of some importance; but the past world is dead; we have nothing to do with it. Our thoughts and our concerns should be for the present world; to know what it is and improve its condition. Let her ed only to the fashionable literature of the day. Let her have an intelligent opinion, and be able to sustain conversation according to the mental, moral and religious improvement of our times. Let the gilded annuals and poems on the centre-table be kept part of the time covered with weekly and daily journals. Let the whole family, men, women and children read newspapers. The best thing any person can do in these times or in any other times, is to mind his own business. In proportion as he minds other people's affairs will he neglect his own, and the result will be small profits and slow returns. Three Things A Lady Cannot Do 1. She cannot pass a millinery shop without stopping. 2. She cannot see a piece of lace without asking the price. 3. She cannot see a baby without kissing it. A lady turns the table on a gentleman as follows: Three things a gentleman cannot do: 1. He cannot go through the house and shut the doors after him. 2. He cannot have a shirt made to suit him. 3. He can never be satisfied with the ladies' fashions. Transportation. The N. P. T. Co's Steamships, ORIZABA and CAIFORNIA. Carrying the U. S. Mails, and Wells, Fargo & Co's Express.
