SATURDAY, APRIL 8, 1871.
Caucuses.
In all cities of the East or South, it is a rule to hold nominating caucuses previous to charter elections. By this means, the people are allowed fairly to express their choice of candidates in open council. Officers are servants of the people, and the people—the mass of the people, should have full and free action in their appointment. Where caucuses are not held prior to nominations, the people may justly suspect that their voices will be ignored, and that the election will be forced with suddenly sprung candidates of disreputable and selfish "rings." Why should not the people be allowed to select their city officers in open caucuss?
DETAINED LETTERS addressed to K. H. Mills, Sonoma, Cal., and Eric R. Yansen, Haywards, Cal., are detained in the Anaheim Postoffice, for want of postage. Persons mailing letters should not forget to stamp them carefully.
GOOD MOVEMENT.—The Anaheim Water Company, is about taking measures to allow persons owning large tracts, to purchase water rights for a portion of the same, with certain provisions. Heretofore an owner of 50 acres could not purchase a water right for forty acres of his land.
UNCLAIMED PACKAGES—Packages remain in the office of Wells, Fargo & Co., in Anaheim, for the following named items About Los Angeles
We clip the following items from the Los Angeles Star:
There are only three palm trees in this county. That at San Juan Capistrano is the oldest. It is said to have been planted in 1730, by Father/Junipero.
We understand that Don Mateo Keller has sent to Demorara for plantings of ginger, bannana, aligator pear, guava tree, pine apple, bread fruit, and arrowroot.
A gentleman of this city has permitted us to make an extract from a letter which he has just received from General Banning, which will be read with interest:
"Orders to commence work on the harbor have already gone to California, but it will be some time before the plan can be agreed upon. They are going to hurry up this work as fast as possible.
Ben Holladay has lost the down coast mail contract. Some San Francisco people have obtained it, and already have one big iron ship that will carry 1,200 tons, and are going to purchase another, and make five trips per month."
DEPARTING—Chas A. Gardner, Esq., Attorney at Law, leaves Anaheim to-morrow for Portland, Oregon, where he has formed a most desirable law partnership, and where he proposes to make his future home. Mr Gardner is one of our most active and useful citizens, and his many friends regret that circumstances are calling him so suddenly to new fields of labor.
It is disgusting to hear men talk about advertising just to help a paper when every body ought to know that the boot is on the other leg.
FESTIVAL—The ladies of Anaheim
Water Company, is about taking measures to allow persons owning large tracts, to purchase water rights for a portion of the same, with certain provisions. Heretofore an owner of 80 acres could not purchase a water right for forty acres of his land.
Unclaimed Packages — Packages remain in the office of Wells, Fargo & Co., in Anaheim, for the following named persons: W. B Collins, Jr.; Chas F. Dodge; F. W. Athearn and W. M. McFadden.
Brass Band. — The Anaheim Brass Band, is making fine progress; and will soon make a public appearance. Among its members, are Chas F. Lehman, Albert Johnson, N. H. Mitchell, Chas Greety, and E. A. Pullen.
Railroad. — We are informed that there is an exceeding good prospect that the Railroad from here to the Landing, will be built. It is said that the wherewith is really forthcoming.
Doors vs. Curs — Complaint is made that wordless curs are not taxed in our City, while bounded country purprious town have to wear their passports. If this is the case, our City Dog Law is an aristocratic swindle.
Removal. — The meat market of Messrs Ashcroft & Pryor, has been removed from Center street around the corner, upon Los Angeles street. The new place is nicely dotted up.
Dr. Rose's Letter — Elsewhere will be found a communication from Dr Tilh Rose, of Los Angeles. The subject relates to an examination later made by the County Board of a young man named Moores, of Los Nietes, for a teacher's certificate. The standard of excellence for teachers in this County is necessarily high, and we are informed by Mr. McFadden, that the youth in question utterly failed in several requisites.
The children, in many of our public schools, are far advanced in learning, and it would be the greatest folly to appoint teachers who would really have to be instructed by them.
It is disgusting to hear men talk about advertising just to help a paper when every body ought to know that the boot is on the other leg.
Festival — The ladies of Anaheim are making arrangements to hold a fair and festival, in aid of the Presbyterian Church.

Passengers.
The following passengers will arrive at Wilmington on the Orizaba to-day: F. P. F. Temple, T. W. Temple, H. Jones, Dr. J. C. Shorb, Ed. H. McDannial, for Los Angeles, and Mrs C. Schmidt child and servant and Max Strobel, for Anaheim.
The following on the Taber: II. Brommerman, and H. Koenig, Anaheim.
Rev. Josiah Bates, of San Bernardino, (formerly of Anaheim) was the recipient of a donation of $174,50 from fifty-two of his friends, on the 25th ult., In a communication which the Reverend gentleman writes to the Guardian he says:
"The handsome manner in which the whole thing was conducted, and the spontaneous and universal expression of confidence which accompanied the gift, could not fail to enhance its money value doubly in my estimation."
Rev. Mr. Bates reports fifteen at the last communion, and that the Court House is so crowded at the sabbath services, that many are unable to get seats.
The following from the Express: The cigar stand of W. B. Roe has been removed from the place it has so long occupied at the Lafayette hotel, to a store opposite, and next to the barber shop of A. Rendon.
The New Bank.
The Farmers and Merchants Bank, of Los Angeles; Governor J. G. Downey, President; I W. Hellman, Cashier, was opened for the transaction of business on Tuesday last, in the banking house formerly occupied by Hellman, Temple & Co., The accounts of all customers of Downey's Bank, and Hellman's Bank have been transferred to the books of the new institution, where they will always receive prompt and immediate attention.
The man who thought advertising would do him no good, as every body know him, has taken down his sign and converted it into kindling wood; he will soon give up his store because the rent is so high, and move his stock of goods into a barn, where if his customers don't find him the shelter wit.
VERY SUSPICIOUS.-- The Anaheim Gazette of March 18th says:
"We acknowledge a call from the famous Sheriff of Alameda county—she ever popular Harry N. Morse. Harry caught the ransel he was after, at Los Angeles; and continued on to Anaheim to visit his old time friends John Hanna and L. W. Kirby. Should any one in Alameda county desire to know the quality of Anaheim wine, and its effect in fifteen minutes upon the human system, we refer them to Harry Morse."
In the same issue of the Gazette, immediately following the above notice of our worthy Sheriff, appeared this little article:
"One rush away, one dog fight and one general drunk in Anaheim this week? Comment would be superfluous.—Alameda County Gazette."
