Route of the Railroad.
Conjecture is rife upon the subject of the route to be taken by the California Southern Railroad, through this part of the State. And although nothing positive can be known until the corporators thereof indicate to the public their intentions, yet we venture to give our views, based upon the bill as it passed, and the topography of the country.
According to the bill, the California branch is "allowed to connect with the main trunk at or near Fort Yuma," and to go to a point in the mountain range in the 35th parallel, at or near Tehatchapee Pass, where the California Southern Pacific (Gilroy) Railroad is now being constructed."
The connection may be made above Ft. Yuma on the Colorado, and no doubt will be made as far up that river as possible, as the Gilroy Company have a land grant from the Tulare Valley to Fort Mojave. The indication is, then, that the line of the new railroad will pass east of Death Valley, strike through the San Gorgonio Pass to San Bernardino, and from thence down to Los Angeles via El Monte and San Gabriel. It would undoubtedly be better for the coast, and if freight and passengers are a consideration, better for the company to swing their line west of Death Valley and come in by Warner's Ranch, San Luis Rey, and up through Anaheim to Los Angeles. But the advantage of their old land grant with selfish motives complished such a benefit.
With this system this system in course with this system coast is prosperous; dise of wealth and all praise to the prising men, who fought this battle of Congress. All mighty, who has, aming, smiled upon exceedingly gracious New York.
Dear Sir:—The final of the 11th instat eated mo. I send couple of circulars of my Thompson pa and you might be an article which wo readers.

through the San Gorgonio Pass to San Bernardino, and from thence down to Los Angeles via El Monte and San Gabriel. It would undoubtedly be better for the coast, and if freight and passengers are a consideration, better for the company to swing their line west of Death Valley and come in by Warner’s Ranch, San Luis Rey, and up through Anaheim to Los Angeles. But the advantage of their old land grant to Mojave, together with the new Congressional land subsidy and right of way, upon similar terms with the Texas Pacific main trunk, will probably take the line through the desert. However, there is a little clause in the bill, thus: "The right to purchase or accept State or individual grants of land for legitimate purposes, is conceded;" and with this weapon the Company may come after us for a subsidy—which they won't get—in consideration of running up the Coast.
From Los Angeles, the route will probably lie through San Fernando Pass and Tejon Pass to Gordon's Ferry (which is in the 35th parallel, comparatively near Tehatchapee Pass, and where the old junction of the Gilroy road was fixed) over a line once projected to Los Angeles by the Gilroy Company, as will be seen on Bancroft's lately published map of the Coast.
Following is a rough map, showing the general direction of the supposed route from Fort Yuma past Los Angeles to Gordon's Ferry:

Undoubtedly, this entire Railroad system will be of far greater value to Los Angeles and this County, than to San Diego. The curve from the Colorado to Los Angeles will hurt San Diego—that is, it will not be so beneficial to that city as if a road went direct to it, and from thence up the coast. But it makes Los Angeles—and must be commenced at once, and the whole system completed in ten years.
If this road crosses the desert according to our conjecture, it will compel the building of a coast road from Los Angeles to San Diego, and, indeed, it is understood that arrangements have already been perfected, by which work will be commenced on the latter road simultaneously with the first operations on the main trunk across the continent.
It is undoubtedly due to the exertions of B. D. Wilson and (always give the Devil his due) P. Banning, that the Los Angeles clause has been inserted in the bill. They may have been personally interested, but their interests were atoms compared to the interests of the County and lower coast at large; and, moreover, we have no right to charge
with selfish motives, men who have accomplished such a magnificent public benefit.
With this system in prospect—with this system in course of construction—with this system completed, the lower coast is prosperous, rich, and a paradise of wealth and refinement.
All praise to the persistent, enterprising men, who have successfully fought this battle of years. All praise to Congress. All praise to God Almighty, who has, after years of frowning, smiled upon our land with an exceedingly gracious smile.
New York, Feb. 27, 1871.
Dear Sir: The article in your journal of the 11th inst., has greatly interested me. I send you by the mail a couple of circulars giving full accounts of my Thompson patent Road Steamers, and you might be able to work out an article which would interest your readers.
I believe the day is not far distant when these engines will be running over many parts of the Pacific States, and it might be a matter of some little pride to think that you were among the first to publish a description of them.
Yours Truly,
D. D. WILLIAMSON.
