ANAHIM GAZETTE. SATURDAY, JANUARY 7, 1871. The Grape Sugar Industry. The manufacture of grape sugar has assumed large proportions. In Germany there were in 1868 sixty establishments in operation which produced that year 22,000,000 pounds of syrup, and 8,000,000 of sugar. Since that time, other and more extensive factories have been established, and the cultivation of potatoes for the purpose also covering a large extent of territory. The potato plantations are usually in sandy districts, adapted to their growth. The method pursued in nearly all of the refineries is identical. The wet starch is first put into a large wash-tub, where, under constant stirring for an hour, it is entirely dissolved in water and diluted acid. From the wash-tubs it is run into vats where it can be boiled by steam—here it remains for sugar four or five hours, for syrup two or three hours. It is then put into the neutralizing tanks to be treated with carbonate of lime and left until the sediment, chiefly composed of gypsum, has settled—this usually requires six hours! The sweet liquid thus obtained is evaporated in vacuum pans, filtered, and left to crystallize, if sugar is to be made, or is manufactured into syrup. The process does not essentially differ from that pursued in the United States, where corn starch is chiefly employed. The great increase in the wine growing districts of America has occasioned an enlarged demand for glucose, and the manufacture of this article appears destined to assume large proportions in the United States, where corn can be obtained in unlimited quantity. In 1854 Paris chewed, snuffed, and smoked 3,800,000 pounds of tobacco, for which it paid 17,725,262 francs. The habit of taking snuff is on the decrease; that of smoking, on the contrary, has been of late years, and still is in course of wonderful development. Between 1839 and 1854 the consumption In 1854 Paris chewed, snuffed, and smoked 3,800,000 pounds of tobacco, for which it paid 17,725,262 francs. The habit of taking snuff is on the decrease; that of smoking, on the contrary, has been of late years, and still is in course of wonderful development. Between 1839 and 1854 the consumption of tobacco in all France nearly doubled in quantity. This increased consumption helps to plump up the government finances curiously. The manufacture and sale of tobacco is a State monopoly in France. It produces a clear yearly profit (benefice net) of more than 100,000,000 francs, or one fifteenth of all the receipts of the public treasury. Exemption from care is not happiness; on the contrary, a certain degree of care is essential to promote enjoyment. Miscellaneous. RINALDI & CO. Allow me to call your attention to my Preparation of Compound Extract Bucha. The competent parts are Bucha, Long Leaf Bucha Juniper Berries. Mode of Preparation—Bucha in vase. Juniper Berries, by distillation, to form a fine plan. Bucha extracted by displacement with spirit then tainted from Juniper Berries; very little sugar is used, and a small proportion of spirit. It is more palatable than any now in use. Bucha is prepared by Druggists in a dark color. It is a plant that contains its fragrance; the action of a flame destroys this (its active principle), leaving a dark and glistuous decoction. Mines in the color of ingredients. The Bucha is my preparation predominates; the smallest quantity of the other ingredients are added, to prevent fermentation; upon inspection it will be found not to be a Tincture, as make in Pharmacopoeia, nor is it a Syrup—and therefore can be used in some where fever or inflammation exist. In this, you have the knowledge of the ingredients and the mode of preparation. Hoping that you will favor it with a trial, and that upon inspection it will meet with your approval.
