ANAHEIM GAZETTE. SATURDAY, JANUARY 7, 1871. Cotton Growing at Anaheim. Mr. Jno L. Strong, a gentleman of thorough experience in cotton producing, and of whose California cotton project our readers have no doubt read of heretofore, has arrived at Anaheim, and has made arrangements, in company with the Land Company, to plant from one to five hundred acres of cotton near Anaheim, the present season. Since his arrival, he has taken a look at the Bolsas, and contracted for the putting in of one hundred acres. Today, in company with Mr. Polhemus, he proposes to take a look over the La Habra ranch. From observation of our soil and climate, he is of opinion that our uplands are the best for producing cotton, in an ordinary season. He proposes, however, to select such locations as will make his experiment a success beyond per-adventure. The crop will be planted about the first of April, and will be ready to gather about the first of September next. He estimates the expense of cultivating, where all labor and teams are hired, to be $10 per acre, and the product to be one hale of 500 pounds per acre, worth $75 on the ground at the present depressed prices of cotton. The cost of putting in a crop of cotton the first year, is materially enhanced by the price of good seed, and the expense of overland transportation. It is unsafe to bring them here for fear of smoothed-out conditions. Our column detailed description who cannot realize reservation read on Claude's Castle by New York. The dullness to acustomed in this been interrupted hitters to vessels undemand, particular Of the four vessels Cadiz, the briga Surprise are reported Teneriffe and St. Teneriffe in a leaky condition and it is remored guarita, has also not known. Our column detailed description who cannot realize reservation read on Claude's Castle by New York. He estimates the expense of cultivating, where all labor and teams are hired, to be $10 per acre, and the product to be one bale of 500 pounds per acre, worth $75 on the ground at the present depressed prices of cotton. The cost of putting in a crop of cotton the first year, is materially enhanced by the price of good seed, and the expense of overland transportation. It is unsafe to bring them by sea, for fear of sweating in the hold of the vessel. The cost of seed the first year would be $2 50 per acre. The seed from one acre will plant 30 acres the second year. Cotton will be planted by farmers on all the different portions of the Stearns Rancho, during the coming year, under his supervision. Thus, a thorough test of the adaptability of this climate and soil to its production will be made. The advantages of California as a cotton producing State, consist, in brief, of uniform seasons, a healthy climate, fertile soil, and superior facilities for marketing the crop. Cotton can be shipped from Anaheim Landing to Liverpool at a cost of $2 50 per bale—30¢ per bale less than the present rates from New Orleans—and by steamer for $7 50 per bale, or $2 50 per bale less than present rates from New Orleans. The difference in exchange between San Francisco and Liverpool will cover all costs of transportation and sale. Thus the California planter actually receives the Liverpool market price at Anabeim for his cotton. Or the Mission Woolen Mills at San Francisco will pay the New York Market price at the date of delivery and transportation from New York to San Francisco in addition. As cotton is an annual crop, from which immediate returns can be had by the producer, it is hoped that the experiments and enterprise of Mr Strong will be successful. Buy a Piece of Land. Buy a piece of land. It does not cost much, and any man with ordinary prudence can save enough in twelve months to buy a hundred and sixty acres, that may in a few years, be worth thousands of dollars. There is nothing like owning a homestead. It is something a man can call his own, and which cannot Buy a Piece of Land. Buy a piece of land. It does not cost much, and any man with ordinary prudence can save enough in twelve months to buy a hundred and sixty acres, that may in a few years be worth thousands of dollars. There is nothing like owning a homestead. It is something a man can call his own, and which cannot perish. It makes him a lord of the soil, and it never decreases in price. Buy a few acres anywhere. It is better to invest even in a ten-acre lot, than what it would cost in whisky and cigars. Buy even a city lot. You cannot lose the lot and you can the small sum it would cost. Fence it and plant a few trees, and its value is at once almost doubled if you buy land, you do an act which you can never regret. The Major Excommunication — A correspondent of the Marysville Appeal, says that the enormous and very cursed excommunication of Victor Emanuel, attributed to the Pope, and now going the rounds of the press, was written by one of the swearing Eidtors of the Sacramento Union. The correspondent referred to, closes his argument as follows: "If Pius the Ninth, like the Roman General Scipio of old, chose to carry the war into Africa, he might hear more tall cursing done about the Sanctum of the Sacramento Union in one day, than he ever heard in the city of Rome." Given Away.—Read the advertisement headed. "Given Away." City lots deaded away, in good faith, and not for coin. Road Appropriation.—The Board of Supervisors, at their session of the 2d instant, appropriated $300 from the Road Fund, to be expended by Pablo Pryor, Road overseer of San Juan Capistrano: The Wine Market New York, January 1, 1871. The dullness to which we have been accustomed in this line of trade, has been interrupted by the reports of disasters to vessels under way to this port, and there is in consequence speculative demand, particularly in Spanish wines. Of the four vessels under way from Cadiz, the briga Fanny and Mary and Surprise are reported to have put into Tenerife and St. Thomas respectively, in a leaky condition, and unloading, and it is remored that a third, the Maguarita, has also put in, but where is not known. As there is but another vessel, the Ricardo, which left Cadiz Nov. 16, under way, and neither of the four can be expected to arrive before Feb. 1st, the wines which may be expected in them must be subject to the increased duty of the New Tariff. In consequence of this there is a stiffness in the market, and prices have an upward tendency. The prices must be considerably affected by the above disaster. A similar fate appears to have befallen the Guiding Star, from Antwerp, with a large cargo of Champagne. She left Southampton Nov. 20, and is therefore 32 days out. At San Francisco they have advices from Montevideo, that the Burdiga, laden with Spanish wines, bound from Marseilles to San Francisco, put in there in distress. This will strengthen the San Francisco market.—W. & P. Rep.
