ANAHEIM GAZETTE. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1870. Plant the Olive. An Eastern paper makes the suggestion that, in view of the high price of butter, a good vegetable substitute might be introduced to take its place. Olive oil is extensively used in Southern European countries, and in portions of Asia, as we use butter, and the taste for it once acquired, the dairy product is comparatively insipid. Even in the United States there is a large consumption of this oil, in cooking and preserving, and for table salads, while inferior qualities are very largely used in the arts and trades. It is singular, when there is such a steady and remunerative demand, that the cultivation of the olive has not been wisely introduced in those portions of the United States that are adapted to it, and particularly in California, where it was successfully introduced from Spain by the Mission Fathers in the last century. Groves planted by them have been in vigorous bearing for over sixty years. In all this time there has not been a failure in the crop of fruit. Such a fact is unparalleled in Europe, where the fruit often fails and the trees become diseased. It can be easily propagated from cuttings like the willow. It will live and bear for hundreds of years. It is a pretty tree and we can think of no product likely to be in more permanent and growing demand than its oil. Obtained fresh and sweet, this would become very popular for domestic use, for it is sweet palatable, entirely wholesome, and could be furnished very cheap. Press, on the return of the rainy season, is generally renewing its advice to plant trees—walnut locust, mulberry, orange, lemon and olive trees, in preference wherever the conditions are favorable; and for the most of these trees that is in a greater part of this State, within the limit of cold sea air. demand than its oil. Obtained fresh and sweet, this would become very popular for domestic use, for it is sweet, palatable, entirely wholesome, and could be furnished very cheap. Press, on the return of the rainy season, is generally renewing its advice to plant trees—walnut locust, mulberry oranges, lemon and olive trees, in preference, wherever the conditions are favorable; and for the most of these trees that is in a greater part of this State, within the limit of cold sea air, and below an elevation of 3,000 in the interior. As oil mills are already established in California, the olive fruit that we may produce will be certain of a market for the oil, if it were only for lumbering, manufacturing and medical uses, which consume it very largely. The pickling of the fruit for the table would be a large item. We have to import table olives now, except the small lots put up in Southern California. They would be a very popular dish if cheaply raised at home. If every farmer would plant a small plot of olive trees, the State would possess in a few years, an additional resource worth millions per annum, while the planter in each case would increase the value of his own resources. —S.
