ANAHEIM GAZETTE. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 24, 1870. We Must Divide this County. The population of Los Angeles county, as shown by the mongre census returns, is now 20,000. Ten thousand of these reside south of the San Gabriel river, through an extent of county; the limits of which are nearly seventy miles from Los Angeles. The business before the Courts, and the county officials generally, is too great for the public convenience, and ought to be divided. The new county of Anaheim would have a population of upwards of ten thousand, amply sufficient for all county purposes, and larger than the population of thirty-five of the counties of California. It is very inconvenient for the citizens of Capistrano to be dragged away to Los Angeles, and be kept there three or four weeks, in attendance upon the protracted sessions of the Courts. The saving in mileage, traveling expenses, etc., would go far to compensate the citizens of the new county for the cost of erecting new buildings, while the impetus it would give to trade, and the advance it would occasion in the price of property, would be sufficient to unite all our citizens in an earnest effort to have the County-Seat erected here. The citizens of the lower section of the county would all favor it, because it would be a great convenience to them, and a saving of time and money, to have RATHER PERSONAL often blamed for indicties, and if the public knew the subjects we doubt not but in would be quite justifiable. Following is that line, taken from and relating to a no-gathers up Oakland Referring to that in says: We can only suggest him of any commercial value; first, an alkali country, in a quantity of salaries him into a tub of sewility might not for toilet purposes, very well for a first rate cases, in Chinese ondly, by inserting his head, he might cheap and convene the calaboose, as we combination of alo creates a light intensity of calcium. RAIN' FALL.—At according to the Gazette, the total rain been two and two inch. At Anaheim inches and eight-s THE "CALL" Francisco Call con nine columns to gantily printed. Tition makes it th state the citizens of the new county for the cost of erecting new buildings, while the impetus it would give to trade, and the advance it would occasion in the price of property, would be sufficient to unite all our citizens in an earnest effort to have the County-Seat erected here. The citizens of the lower section of the county would all favor it, because it would be a great convenience to them, and a saving of time and money, to have the County-Seat located at a point so convenient and easy of access. Hapily, all south of the San Gabriel are united on this question. The only opposers to the measure are the tax-burdened citizens of Los Angeles; and really, they are not to blame for growing at the prospect of a division. But our citizens are to blame, for paying attention to them or the leading old ogles who manage to manage their affairs. Another Coast Steamer. By reference to the following telegraph dispatch, it will be seen that we are to have competition on the Coast Route between San Diego and San Francisco: San Francisco, Dec. 21, 1870. Chas. R. Johnson, Esq., Anaheim: Sir:—The steamer William Tabor, on the San Diego route, will land at Anaheim Landing on the up trip on Tuesday, Dec. 27. Passage, $15. Freight at reduced rates. Wm. E. Plummer. Master. This steamer left San Francisco, down, on the 22d inst. Outlook for Congress. The public mind is being attracted to the necessity of having a Congressman, for once, from the lower counties of California. San Francisco has, by hook or crook, ruled us out heretofore, and the southern half of the State (large enough for a state by itself) has thus not only been neglected, but positively damaged. The necessity is now so great for a lower coast man to succeed Axtell in the House, that the most avail able man, regardless of politics or any- the necessity of having a Congressman, for once, from the lower counties of California. San Francisco has, by hook or crook, ruled us out heretofore, and the southern half of the State (large enough for a state by itself) has thus not only been neglected, but positively damaged. The necessity is now so great for a lower coast man to succeed Axtell in the House, that the most avail able man, regardless of politics or anything else, should be selected and put before the people for their nomination. STILL THEY COME — Rather more than the usual number of new settlers have taken up their abode in and around Santa Ana and Anaheim, this week. They mostly drove down, bag and baggage, from the upper counties. On Wednesday, we interrogated two wagon loads of live folks from Watsonville, Monterey county, who were going to settle at Santa Ana—had never seen the place, but heard about it. The time is not far hence, when we will be the centre of a thriving and densely populated agricultural country. SHIPMENTS OF NEW WINE — The shipments of the new Anaheim vintage, thus far in the Season, as appears from the Freight Lists published in the Gazette, are upward of 800 pipes, containing in the neighborhood of forty or fifty thousand gallons of wine of the very best quality. It is estimated that within the course of the next six weeks, there will have been shipped from here, altogether, from one fourth to one half of the entire vintage—thus, from the favorable season, being thrown upon the market much earlier than heretofore. As the wine is better in quality, it is hoped that better prices will prevail for it. RATHER PERSONAL—Newspapers are often blamed for indulging in personalities, and if the public but thoroughly knew the subjects of their comments, we doubt not but in many cases the news would be quite justifiable, if not pardonable. Following is something fresh in that line, taken from the Oakland News, and relating to a noted old fraud, who gathers up Oakland items for the Alta. Referring to that individual the News says: We can only suggest two ways to make him of any appreciable or commercial value; first, to drive him through an alkali country, induce him to swallow a quantity of salaratus, and thus turn him into a tub of soft soap. The commodity might not be exactly suitable for toilet purposes, but it would answer very well for a first course, in desperate cases, in Chinese laundries. Or secondly, by inserting a wick in the top of his head, he might be used as a large, cheap and convenient lamp in front of the calaboose, as we are informed that a combination of alcohol and spermaceti creates a light nearly equaling the intensity of calcium. RAIN’FALL.—At Oakland California, according to the Alameda County Gazette, the total rain fall this season has been two and twelve-sixteents of an inch. At Anaheim we have had two inches and eight-sixteents. THE “CALL” ENLARGED.—The San Francisco Call comes to us enlarged to nine columns to the page, and elegantly printed. We think that competition makes it thrive. New Advertisements Our readers would do well to notice the advertisements of S. Prager, Walter & Smith, L. W. Kribbs and Chas. P.
