In order to insure their publication on the following Saturday morning. ADVERTISING!—Keep your name and business constantly before the public. No firm can long succeed which does not advertise. Advertising gives respectability to business, and insures its life and vitality. Temperature at Anaheim. Europo has its Italy, with a reputation for climate which has endured for ages; but its winters are chilly and severe, and its mid-summers are hot and sultry. For the last and most westerly settlements of America—the Southern California coast—it is left to celsius Italy and the whole world for climate. Here it is, that morning noon and evening, throughout every season of the year, the temperature is even and unavailble—the skies are beautiful and pure, and the sun rises and sets at the verge of a canopy of rainbows. The extent of our "desperately" cold winters is 40° Fahrenheit, and at midsummer the harvest fields are greeted with a pleasant sea-breeze from 11 A.M. till 5 P.M. Our land speaks the climate, and in the heavens its glory is read. The sick wond their way hither even now, and are cured; and the time will come when our valleys will be lined with the castles of the wealthy, and our coast be the pleasure resort of the whole world. We are indebted to C. F. Scholl Esq., for the following record of temperature taken at Anaheim during the Our land speaks the climate, and in the heavens its glory is read. The sick wond their way hither even now, and are cured; and the time will come when our valleys will be filled with the castles of the wealthy, and our coast be the pleasure resort of the whole world. We are indebted to C. F. Santa Ana This flourishing village now embraces24 well-constructed and comfortable houses, among which are a store and post office. Parties are talking of constructing a commodious hotel, as constant inquiry is being made for one by travelers and settlers. The indications are that the country around Santa Ana for many miles will all soon be opened by beautiful garden homes, such as only can be brought into existence in this remarkable climate. During last week twelve families camped down on the Williams' estate, and are even now nearly all permanently located thereabouts. While the land around Santa Ana is the very best, the price has thus far been quite low; hence the influx of settlers. We are informed by A. L. Bush. Esq., that the McFadden ranches have been withdrawn from market at $16 per acre, as they were going like "hot cakes" at that value. Bush Esq., that the McFadden ranches have been withdrawn from market at $16 per acre, as they were going like "hot cakes" at that value. It is to be regretted that proprietors withdraw their land from sale because it sells well at a reasonable figure. The same course has hitherto been pursued around Anaheim, and always with a detrimental effect. Let the country be settled up and developed, no matter at how low a price per acre, for therein lies the secret of wealth to proprietors, and prosperity to the community. Latest War News. In the engagement of the 3d at Patay 20,000 French held ground against 60,000 Prince Frederick Charles' army, but were cut to pieces by the shells of the enemy. The German artillery was served with fearful and overwhelming effect. The Papal Zonaves fought bravely, but were nearly all killed. The Prussians sent a flag of truce into Paris, announcing that Orleans had been taken, and the Loire army routed with the loss of 30 guns and 1,000 prisoners. King William telegraphed to Queen Augusta on the 5th: Orleans was occupied last night without being stormed. Third corps took ten cannon and mirailleur. Eighth corps, first Army, on the 4th boat the French in several conflicts north-east of Rouen, taking some guns and 4,000 prisoners—Prussian loss, one killed and 40 wounded. Minister Washburn writes from Paris that the French are beaten at all points, and the capitulation of Paris may be looked for within three weeks. Gossip. The curse of every small town is its gossip. No village of the size of Anaheim is free from it. It has always been the case in small places, and will be so for certainly twenty thousand years hence. Men will talk, criticise, scandal, vilify—so will old women—so will all. If not an inherent instinct of nature, it is certainly a leading fashion that will not soon go out of date. To those who have carefully observed the workings of the human mind, all this "talk"—this idle "gab"—is nothing more than "wind." It is only air put in motion. For the one uttering gossip about another, does it with an easy, accommodating spirit, and does not mean a fiftieth part of it. Really, it is the want of other amusement, or employment, that causes it, and the listener is shallow indeed who gives it the weight of fact. The following is given as a sample of gossip among ladies of fashion: Mrs. A. How delighted I am to see you! It is an age since I have had this pleasure! What a charming bonnet?" Mrs. B. "You think so?" Mrs. A. "It is perfect! But anything upon you looks well" Mrs. B. "I never saw you looking better; that morning dress is so becoming! I have just left Mrs. C.; she was hribbly dressed." Mrs. A. "How can it be otherwise with such an ugly creature? What a beautiful sack that is! Who made it for you?" Mrs. B. "Madame Bonne chose Have you seen Mrs C lately?" Mrs. A. "No; and I don't care to see her; she is such a fool. You know that all or?" Mrs. B. "Yes; with Mr. T." Mrs. A. "I will have to refuse to see her if she calls again. You are Mrs. A. "How can it be otherwise with such an ugly creature? What a beautiful sack that is! Who made it for you?" Mrs. B "Madame Bonnechoe Have you seen Mrs C lately?" Mrs. A. "No; and I don't care to see her; she is such a fool. You know that all or?" Mrs. B "Yes; with Mr. T." Mrs. A. "I will have to refuse to see her if she calls again. You are going already?" Mrs. B "Yes; I have some shopping to do." Mrs. A. "Don't be so long again, my dear Mrs B, before coming, and another time don't go away in such a hurry." Soon after the departure of Mrs. B who goes to another house where she reports that Mrs. A. was looking as yellow as a pumpkin and wore such a common-looking morning dress, Mrs. C and Mrs D arrive. Mrs. A. "How kind it is of you to call! It is an age since you have done me this favor! What a beautiful face with my dear Mrs C; and those shoes of yours, Mrs D, are exquisite; but no wonder, with such feet!" Mrs. D. "Don't talk of my feet, it's you who have a foot worth talking about." Mrs. A. "Mrs. B has just been here." Mrs. C. "Why, she told me she didn't visit you any more." Mrs. A. "What! If she don't take care, what she says may come true. You know what people say about her—" Mrs. D. "It's disgusting!" Mrs. A. "She has the ugliest bonnet on you ever saw; and such a sack! I could hardly keep from laughing And such a bore! I could hardly get rid of her. Going already? Don't be so long another time before coming see me; and try, when you do come, my dear Mrs C, and you, too, my dear Mrs D, to stay a little longer" RAIN FALL — The entire rainfall the present season, as estimated on rain-gages kept by Mr. W. M. Higgins and W. R. Olden, Esq., has been two inches.
