MOTOR TRANSIT STARTS THROUGH SERVICE TO BAY CITY
through motor stage limited service the inland route to San Francisco Oakland and the ferry has been ranged by the Motor Transit Comording to W. D. Howell, general eager, the schedule provides for delayed running time of only seven- and a half hours, stages leaving the Union Stage Depot in Los Angeles every morning at 6:30 o'clock and arriving in Oakland at midnight.
The only stops made are one at Baker's field for lunch and one at Merced for dinner in the evening. Passengers travel on the same reservations for the entire distance, it is announced. Calling to mind the plan by which the old horse-drawn overland stages used to operate the motor stage service to San Francisco provides for relief drivers a new pilot taking the helm after each stop.
"Sensing the increasing demand for through stage service to the Bay City we began planning such a schedule several months ago," says Mr. Howell.
HOW MANY CYLINDERS SHOULD MY CAR HAVE
By H. S. GELENETTE,
Oldsmobile and Harry C. Stutz Motor Cars.
All talk about a six giving continuous power and a four not giving continuous power is the bunk.
Just watch a heavy loaded truck running down the street or on a steep grade. Do they run steady or do they go by jerks? If the power was not applied to the rear or driving wheels evenly the truck would go down the street just like a small wagon—if you were to kick it and when it slacked up, kick it again. The power that drives your car is applied through compound gears, that is, your crankshaft makes (differs in different cars) from 3 1/2 to 5 1/2 revolutions to every revolution of your rear or driving wheels.
If the six is the motor, why not one (you cannot name one) make of truck that uses a six cylinder motor. Surely the truck manufacturer want to build a truck that will operate economically and stand abuse, such as no pleasure car is called upon to stand.
All racing cars are and always have been four cylinder and eight cylinder. Why? Because a six would not stand the strain. Porter Brothers of Indianapolis spent a fortune trying to build a six that would stand up in a race. So have numerous manufacturers, but they all gave it up as impossible. One manufacturer of only six cylinder cars is making capital out of their car winning second and third in races the last year. They don't tell you that the motor in the car with their name on it was an eight cylinder special that turned the trick.
Why go to the expense of building a special sight when they claim a six is the thing.
Power. A four with the same piston displacement has more power than a six. If any dealer is from Missouri and wants to be shown I know...

HAPPY CHRISTMAS
We are profoundly grateful for the patronage that has been ours and for the many wishes for a Happy Holiday Season that have been extended to us. In return we express the desire that every one may find this build a six that would stand up in a race. So have numerous manufacturers, but they all gave it up as impossible. One manufacturer of only six cylinder cars is making capital out of their car winning second and third in races the last year. Why go to the expense of building a special eight when they claim a six is the thing.
Power. A four with the same piston displacement has more power than a six. If any dealer is from Missouri and wants to be shown, I know a four that sells for less than $1400 that will out demonstrate any six cylinder car on the market selling for less than $2500 in a hill climbing test in high gear.
Why does a Ford stand up? Why does a Dodge stand up? Why does the four cylinder Olds stand up? Because they are four cylinder.
Next week I will tell you why they don't use six cylinder motors in trucks and racing cars. You will admit that they have to stand more abuse than anything running on the earth.
AUTO INSURANCE RATES
WILL BE RAISED
JANUARY 1
AUTO INSURANCE 6...6...6...6
Increasing numbers of automobile thefts and the continued carelessness of motorists in failing to lock their cars when parked will cause another skyward shoot of auto insurance rates in Southern California on January 1.
This announcement has just been made by the Automobile Club of Southern California, which did not raise its rates in conformity with the conference companies in November.
Insurance rates, it is pointed out, reflect directly the cost of the losses to the insuring company, and in the case of the Insurance Department of the Automobile club, this holds true as well as write the general companies.
The club as usual, however, will write its insurance for auto owners at actual operating cost, and while the premiums are increased, any portion of the original deposits made by motorists not used will be returned to the insured parties at the expiration of the policy, or when the policy is canceled.
Self-lieness on the part of motorists who fail to lock their cars when leaving them at the curb, muttering to themselves as they jump out: "Oh, well, what's the difference, I'm insured anyway, so let'em steal it!" is one of the big causes which makes necessary for the raising of rates by this popular medium of insurance.
If all auto owners would exercise care in safe guarding their cars whether they are insured or not, but even more particularly if they are insured, there would be no necessity of
