RETURN OF HUSBAND WOULD MAKE HAPPY YULETIDE FOR WIFE
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 21.—Mrs. Pearl Garth has many things to be thankful for this Christmas.
After weeks of imprisonment in the county jail and the psychopathic ward after trying days in court, she is free.
A jury in superior court acquitted her four days ago. She was charged with firing four shots at her husband, R. L. Garth, prominent real estate man of Long Beach.
And yet—
"This Christmas," she said yesterday,
"will be the saddest day of my life, I'm afraid." She set alone in her room, her fingers busy fashioning tinsel ornaments for a' Christmas tree.
"For seven years we have been together on Christmas day. They have been happy, because our love made them so. Every year we've had a little Christmas tree and surprise presents—just like children, she continued.
"I haven't any right—any grounds—to hope so, and still I'm trusting, believing that in spite of all, we will be together again this Christmas."
Mrs. Garth has the typical brunett beauty of her Southern ancestors. She does not deny that she inherits their ardent affections and impulsiveness.
"But it wasn't impulse that made me fire those terrible shots at Mr. Garth," she said. "I wasn't responsible, that's all.
First, you know, he had left me. I was half mad with grief and loneliness. In addition, I developed a peculiar illness that caused me intense physical pain. A physician prescribed a drug for me.
"The drug crazed me. I didn't know what I was doing when I fired those shots—wasn't any more responsible than the delirious patient who fights the nurse who tries to sooth him.
When my mind snapped back into place I could have killed myself in the depth of my anguish. I couldn't believe it was true.
"And I can't help hoping that he will realize that, and come back to me for Christmas day."
There were times when I think I was foolishly jealous," she said. "I"
Airedale Dog Goes to Trial on Charge of Cat Slaughter
SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 21.—Dormie, arrogant Airedale, faced the supreme moment of his life today.
He went to trial—a jury trial—on a charge of catslaughter, resulting from the death of Sunbeam and twelve other cats.
An alibi will be the defense, although before court opened today Attorney James T. Brennan, representing Dormie, had not determined which of the many alibia he will use.
Dormie issued another long statement today denying dogmatically and categorically all of the charges against him. Dormie seemed in excellent spirits before court opened. He arrose early, exercised on the lawn of his home and ate three sausages for breakfast.
"Merely added proof of our contention that Dormie has an insatiable appetite for cats," was the comment of Assistant District Attorney Orcutt, in charge of the prosecution, when he learned of Aormic's breakfast.
The state was known to have in its possession paw prints alleged to be those of Dormie.
"Fine joke," came the answer from Dormie's camp. "Those are the prints of 'Doc,' the Newfoundland who lives in the next block. Poor 'Doc'—he's being used as a catspaw."
Airedale fanciers have come to Dormie's rescue.
As a character witness today they brought forth Rowdy, brother of Laddie, President Harding's dog.
Rowdy was the personal bodyguard of "Mary Ann," Persian cat, for months, they claim, and when "Mary Ann" died from entirely natural causes, he fastened eight days in grief.
The trial was before a jury in Police Judge Lile T. Jacks' court. It has attracted wide interest and is said to be the first time in jurisprudence that an Airedale has been tried for its life.
SELECTS ANAHEIM AS GOOD BUSINESS TOWN
Anaheim has another new industry—an Awning manufacturer.
It will be conducted by Charles E. Davis, formerly of Long Beach.
In an interview today, Mr. Davis said: "I have been planning to locate in Anaheim for some time. I not only think it is a good business town but I think it is a good place to live, too. Your chamber of commerce secretary, Mr. Fraser, has been most cordial and accommodating and it was his initiative and persuasive power that finally settled the matter in my mind. I'm glad I'm here! For the present we will confine our operations to the manufacture of awnings and later will branch out in all kinds of canvas products."
BOY'S DEATH HIDDEN TO SAVE IRON HOOP
KANSAS CITY, Mo., Dec. 21.—A rusty iron hoop, treasure of a boy, 5, played an important role in the mystery which for three and one-half months clouded the death of Joe Le-betski, 9, buried alive in the collapse of a play-cave.
This new angle was announced while the victim was being buried.

"And I can't help hoping that he will realize that, and come back to me for Christmas day."
"There were times when I think I was foolishly jealous," she said. "I took exceptions to the trivial things he did. I know now that I should have been big enough to have overlooked them. Jealousy and resentment poisoned my mind.
"And I'm proud to say that I'd rather—oh, a thousand times rather—have gone through all the anguish of imprisonment and trial, than to have lived and never known the one big thing in life—and that is love."

SHANGHAI, China, Dec. 21—Madam Sun Yat Sen, wife of Sun Yet Sen, president of the South China Republic, has been kidnapped and is being held in the mountains of Kwangsi province by her captors for $500,000 ransom. Madam Sen was en route to join her husband who is at the head of his armies marching toward Pekin. She was to have taken charge of the Red Cross work of the southern armies. Madam Sun is well known in the United States. She is a graduate of the Methodist school at Macon, Ga. Her sister, Neilling Soong is a Wellesley college graduate.
BANDITRY OF YOUTHS LASTS BUT ONE DAY
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 21.—Banditry for three youths, Floyd Adams, aged 15, Otto Adams, his brother, and George R. Curry, the last two about 22 years of age, lasted for just one day. Yesterday before Justice of the Peace Brown, the youths were held on two charges—attempted robbery and grand larceny.
According to testimony introduced by Deputy District Attorney McDaniel, the boys stole a car belonging to D.W. Treece at Merced and drove to Los Angeles. On December 9 they engaged a taxicab at the Southern Pacific depot and instructed the driver to take them to Universal City.
On the Cahuenga Pass, one-of-the youths struck the driver, Ray Anderson, with a money bag containing a billiard ball. When the driver told them he was a married man and had children, they ceased beating him into unconsciousness and left.
Floyd, the 15-year-old boy, confess-
BUT SAVE IRON HOOP
KANSAS CITY, Mo., Dec. 21.—A rusty iron hoop, treasure of a boy, 5, played an important role in the mystery which for three and one-half months clouded the death of Joe Lebetski, 9, buried alive in the collapse of a play-cave.
This new angle was announced while the victim was being buried.
For three and a half months Tony Mackish kept the death of his friend a secret, because he was afraid some other lad would get his hoop out of the cave.
When workmen dug up the body of Joe, Tony was standing nearby. When his iron hoop was unearthed he picked it up and ran. Earl Gilbert, police chauffeur, noticed the incident.
Joe was sitting in the back of the cave on August 25 digging out sand with Tony's hoop, according to the story. Dominick was on top of the cave and his weight, coupled with the digging from the inside, caused the structure to collapse. Tony then fled.
