The Sure Shot Oil Company's No. 1 snow on the beam. Completed at 2337, some cleaning out work had to be done with cable tools before the well went on production. On account of sanding up no figure on the production is yet available, but it is thought the well will make about 275 barrels.

NOTES FROM BIG
that drilling can be resumed at 2975. No well in the Montebello field has resisted all efforts to shut off water as stubbornly as the Arcadia.
The Comanche Oil company will soon add new production to the Montebello output. At the Manly a string of 8 inch was set and cemented at 2680. Calking No. 1 is rigging up for rotary to go deeper. The idea is to get the Calkins into the deep Eggleson sands and make a big well out of it.
Keeler No. 2 was finished at 3865 and went on a production. To date this well is pumping about 300 barrels of fluid of which close to 58 per cent is water. No. 1 at 3055 is fishing for tools.
The Pan American Petroleum company is having its troubles getting Pasadena No. 2 down. Sidetracking pipe and junk is now at 3180.
The Potter Oil company has about completed its sidetracking job and is ready to resume drilling at 3160.
The Petroleum Midway stopped drilling on Prugh No. 9 at 3456 and preparations are being made to put the well on production. Baldwin 7-A is drilling at 2965 in hard sand. Baldwin No. 11 at 2905 is drilling on iron.
Eggleston No. 1, the St. Helen's new Montebello wonder, continues to be the field's master producer. Doing close to 1700 barrels of 26 gravity oil the Eggleston well opened up a new field and started some five new wells drilling. Monterey No. 4, adjoining the Eggleston, is rigging up the rotars to deepen. Monterey No. 6 spudded in and shows 800 feet of hole. Monteyre No. 7 is building rig.
Drilling on Howard-Smith No. 1 is scheduled by the Standard to start in a very few days. On the Baldwin the following new wells have been located: Baldwin No. 59, 60 and 61.
The Western Pacific is putting up a fight against the trouble that makes the oil man's life interesting. With a string of tools in the hole at 3125 the outlook is not pleasing. The tools a well on the Farwell, the Alexander, the Sanchez, the Flood, and two wells on the Bell properties.
The Standard Oil Company, bidding against the Shell and General Petroleum, secured the 62 acre Sanchez property, paying a thousand dollars bonus and giving a sixth royalty. The Standard has a rig up and will start drilling before the end of the week.
The Chansler-Canfield Midway has a lot of railroad land adjoining the Union's Bell on which a well is to be started at once.
Dan Murphy, president of the Brea Canyon Oil Company, owns the property on which the tile factory is located. Murphy has already staked out a number of wells and will begin drilling at once.
The Central Oil Company has seven acres lying right in line. The property has room for two wells. The Central will probably begin operations soon.
In addition to the Sanchez lease the Standard secured the Brownrigg-Kelar holdings and is building a rig to start drilling at once.
The General Petroleum has a 50 acre lease on which drilling operations will start soon.
According to present plans about 15 wells will be started at Santa Fe Springs within the next ten days.
The Union Oil Company's Meyer No. 5 is now drilling in the hard sand at 4800 and as yet struck no favorable oil showings. The Union's only producer on the Meyer is No. 3, a well completed at 4595.
Whittier
All that seems to stand in the way of the Bandini becoming an oil well is the water problem. Drilled to 4050 this well has showed excellent indications of light oil. Water trouble at 3600 feet has prevented the well from making the showing it is believed it could make. At this depth the well is now standing cement under pressure.
The Central Oil Company, operating in the old Puente field, has three wells drilling. No. 67 shut off water successfully at 1871 and is now drilling gas in quantity and shows oil colors.
HAWTHORNE-INGLEWOOD
Kitselman is satisfied with a showing that appeared in the Hicks well at 3800 and is trying to shut off bottom water so that the showing can be satisfactorily tested out. Playa Del Rey No. 1 at 1700 had the 6 inch casing string freeze.
Although the Standard Oil Company has abandoned the wells on the Bohon and Landowners leases the properties have not been relinquished.
REDONDO
Satisfied that there is a deep oil sand carrying light oil at Redondo the Chansler-Canfield Midway is making preparations to go on down with Redondo No. 1. At 3035 this well started off with an initial production of 200 barrels, but like all top sand wells it did not hold up. Redonde like all the other Southern California fields is believed to have a second sand and in this sand the C. C. M. O. will bring in a real oil well soon.
The Union Oil Company's Sommers No. 1, now drilling at 4350, is in brown shale and shell. This well is falling into the doubtful class and will probably ont make a producer. The Union's Redondo well on the Francis lease is drilling at 2600 and has had some showings.
LOS ANGELES
Beaat drilling a tEagle Rock states that at 2600 the formation is sandy blue shale and the outlook for a well is not discouraging.
The Burkhart well at Palms is drilling at 3745 in sandy brown shale.

WHITTIER-SANTE FE SPRINGS
The Union Oil Company's Bell well is the greatest oil well of its kind in the west. Completed at 3788 and flowing between 2500 and 3000 barrels of 31 gravity oil, the well is the greatest producer of light oil in the state and probably in the United States. Six inch pipe was set at 3781, the oil sand was just tapped. The gas pressure has increased from 400 pounds to 525 and the well is flowing steadily.
Drilling obligations of the Union Oil Company on the aggregate leased properties of 500 acres at Santa Fe Springs includes the starting of six wells at once. The Union will start

All that seems to stand in the way of the Bandini becoming an oil well is the water problem. Drilled to 4050 this well has showed excellent indications of light oil. Water trouble at 3600 feet has prevented the well from making the showing it is believed it could make. At this depth the well is now standing cemented under pressure.
The Central Oil Company, operating in the old Puente field, has three wells drilling. No. 67 shut off water successfully at 1871 and is now drilling at 1955. No. 68 at 2480 is in the brown shale and No. 66 is making hole at 1955.
Drilling on the La Habra Midway's wild cat is now at 1767, the formation shownig hard sandy shale. The showing of oil heralded last week was in the shale and consisted of colors only.
Standing cemented at 2345 the Southern California Oil Company's Sanderson No. 1 is ready to go ahead. The lost tools were fished out and the hole is now in perfect condition.
The Murphy-Coyote, famous for its big wells ten years ago, is till under heavy development by the Standard Oil Company. Drilling now includes ten wells. The drilling wells are Nos. 79, 80, 84, 85, 86 and 87. Nos. 80 and 90 are new locations.
On the Bastanchury lease the Stadard has No. 1, a former producer, redrilling and deepening at 4475. No. 5 was put on production at 4728 and makes about 50 barrels.
Active drilling on the Whitley property now includes two wells. Whitley No. 5, the new well depened to 2565, is doing about 125 barrels. No. 6 at 2875 is in brown shale and is beginning to look favorable. At No.7 the pipe froze at 1960 and the well is standing.
PUENTE HILLS
After battling with water for a month or more the Bardeen Oil Company is making preparations to receive Getty No. 1 at 2250. Indications point to a good well for Bardeen with the water shut off.
The Chino Corona United produced heavy oil at 3678. Cable tools are now being installed to go on down in search of a deeper and lighter sand.
The Gold Seal Petroleum Company is now drilling at 4035. At this depth the well is not showing any encouragement.
Contrary to the expected the Mahala Oil Company's No. 1, completed at 4010 feet, failed to flow when tried out for production a few days ago. The rods and tubing are being installed and the well will be on the beam before the end of the week. With close to 1200 feet of oil in the hole Mahala No. 1 should make a commercial producer on the pump. The well seems to have plenty of gas to bring out the production and flow, but the oil seemingly did not come in fast enough to maintain the column. Pumping and agitating will bring the oil in and probably after being on the pump awhile the well will flow.
The Pasadena Puente Oil Company set 10 inch at 820 and is getting ready to make a production test from this lease is drilling at 2600 and has had some showings.
LOS ANGELES
Beaat drilling a tEagle Rock states that at 2600 the formation is sandy blue shale and the outlook for a well is not discouraging.
The Burkhardt well at Palma is drilling at 3745 in sandy brown shale.

NEWPORT-SAN JOAQUIN HILLS
Drilling on the H. T. & K. Syndicate stopped at 3102 and the well is standing idle. It is understood that the company is awaiting developments.
At 1250 feet the Northland Oil Company set 12 1-2 inch but did not get a shut off.
The Nu Santa drilling at 2335 feet is showing considerable oil and looks rather good. The Nu Santa got a shut off without any trouble.
That the Wircher-Gray oil interests think well of the Newport field is evidenced by the fact that this company is starting a rig for the fourth well. No. 1 is down 2800 feet in clay and gravel. No. 2 shows 2500 feet in the sandy shale and No. 3 is a rig. No. 4 is building.
At Newport the Interstate Oil Company has resumed work on one well.
BIG OIL FIELDS
NEW OIL DEVELOPMENT ON SIGNAL HILL IS PREDICTED NOW
Alexander Hursh, general sales director of the Fifty-Fifty Oil and Land Syndicate of Long Beach, was a business visitor today at the branch office in Anaheim.
In an interview with a Herald representative Mr. Hursh said:
"There will be big developments in the Signal Hill oil fields within a few weeks which will mark the beginning of a reign of prosperity unparalleled in the history of Southern California, and that's saying a good deal for a section of the state whose dynamic enterprise has astonished the whole world."
"Signal Hill is proven oil territory. The best proof next to the gushing oil itself is the fact that the Standard Oil Company, the biggest operating oil concern in the United States, and the Shell Oil Company, the biggest in Great Britain, are contending for supremacy in this field and have planned to spend millions of dollars in development."

"This was the statement in court this morning of Luis Guillen, alias Vicente Melgosa, alleged slayer of Denny Sheriffs Theodore Crossley and Henry Nelson. But after consulting with W. J. Bensheof, who was appointed his attorney, Guillen decided to enter a plea of not guilty.
He was secretly brought here from San Bernardino at 8 o'clock this morning. The preliminary hearing was conducted without delay and he was ruled back to jail in the neighboring county. The trial was set for November 22 before Judge George Freeman.
Trial by jury is said to have existed in 2,000 B.C."

A better flavor, yes; a more pleasing aroma, yes; but more than that, a rounded out "completeness" that is wholly satisfying.
That's how Chesterfields "satisfy."
And the blend—that's why Chesterfields "satisfy." A blend of Turkish and of Burley and of the choiceest of other fine home-grown tobaccos in a new com-
