JUMPING THE GUN o man's first actual trip into outer space, Desilu Playhouse spec lates on what it will be like tonight as they present "Man in Orbit," starring Lee Marvin 30 p.m., Channel 2. Written by Joseph Landon, the story concerns two scientists who decide to fire the rocket without waiting for official sanction. Though this is a forerunner in hundred of space stories yet to hit the TV screen, one can't help thinking about the old Buck Roger comic strip. So many of the feats performed by that space man years ago are becoming actualities in our generation.

Smog Damage Hitting Farmers' Pocket Book
RIVERSIDE, CALIF., — (U.S.) Air pollution is hitting more and more California farmers in their pocketbook, according to a University of California scientist.
John T. Middleton, Riverside plant pathologist, says that statewide smog damage to crops now amounts to eight million dollars a year.
Although crop damage in Los Angeles county has decreased the last year, Middleton points out that it is increasing in the River side-San Bernardino area, in San Francisco Bay area and the San Joaquin Valley.

Texans Build Air Conditioned Fishing Barge
BY CHARLES ROBERTS LAKE DALLAS, Tex. (UPI)
PEDESTRIAN DEATHS DECLINE
Seven per cent fewer pedestrians were killed in California traffic accidents in 1958 than in the previous year, and walking across or along streets and roadways was 18 per cent safer last year than it was six years before.
This fact was announced today by Robert McCarthy, Director of Motor Vehicles, and chairman of Governor Brown's Transportation and Traffic Safety Committee.
"Fewer pedestrian deaths shows greater caution by motorists and walkers alike, but both groups can do much more to help reduce the death and injury toll for those on foot." McCarthy noted.
Crossing streets and roadways between intersections was by far the most dangerous pedestrian action, accounting for 266 deaths last year. Crossing at intersections where there were no traffic signals was next more hazardous, taking 175 lives.
Night was the most dangerous time for pedestrians, accounting for nearly six out of 10 of those who were struck and killed by motor vehicles.
Aged persons and the very young accounted for the greatest number of victims, although more than one-fourth of the casualties were between the ages of 45 and 64; and men outnumbered women more than two to one as pedestrian accident victims.
"An analysis of these accidents indicates that a large majority resulted from violation of the law by either the motorist or the pedestrian, or by both." McCarthy said.
"Stricter enforcement of California's traffic laws is the answer to our shameful traffic death toll."
Clear Plug With Bug Inside Good For Fishing

"If the plug doesn't get the bug certainly should," Denton, a husky former fighter and one-time retainer.
One day nearly three years Anderton was in a novelty toying with a plastic "ice containing what seemed to insect. The idea was for jokers to drop the cube drink so the drinker would there was a bug in his ice.
Anderton recalled that he watching him said, "Boy, had some hooks on it. I would catch some fish."
"That started me thinking said, "I realized I would come up with the right wei-ance to get the right action water."
Anderton made a mod- tried it out.
"The first time I used caught a six-pound bass," He said.

Texans Build Air Conditioned Fishing Barge.
By CHARLES ROBERTS
LAKE DALLAS, Tex. (UPI) — Three men from north Texas have come up with the answer for people who prefer an air-conditioned living room with television to fishing in 100-degree heat.
They have built an air-conditioned fishing barge where a man can sit in a comfortable armchair and not only look at television while he waits for the fish to bite but also can have coffee, sandwiches and cold drinks served to him.
The three owners of the Lewisville Fishing Barge — K.P. Massey, W. D. Barrow and J. W. Jaego — have provided a place for both the comfort - loving fisherman and the one who, for some physical reason, can't go out on the lake.
A 90-foot pontoon bridge connects the barge with the shore so persons in wheel chairs can coast down without any danger of plunging into the 35 feet of water.
Seven - hundred oil drums keep the barge afloat. Inside there are three fishing wells, each 40 feet long and 12 feet wide. Around the outside for those who want fresh air, the casting deck is 228 feet around and 14 feet wide.
The barge is located about 30 miles from Dallas on Garza-Little Elm Lake which is connected to Lake Dallas by a small pass. The fishing's excellent.
The three owners, as soon as the barge was complete, scattered alfalfa bales and cottonseed cake around the area. This baiting has brought in the minnows that larger fish feed on.
For the fisherman who boards the barge without tackle, rods and reels are rented by the day.
Since the white bass started running, both the outside area and the inside wells have been jammed with anglers. It's not unusual to catch two fish at a time on a double - rigged line.
The barge is air-conditioned by 17½ tons of air-conditioning units. In the winter, a central heating system keeps the temperature at about 70 degrees.
Accounted for the greatest number of victims, although more than one-fourth of the casualties were between the ages of 45 and 64; and men outnumbered women more than two to one as pedestrian accident victims.
An analysis of these accidents indicates that a large majority resulted from violation of the law by either the motorist or the pedestrian, or by both. McCarthy said.
"Stricter enforcement of California's traffic laws is the answer to our shameful traffic death toll. Both pedestrians and motorists must obey the law or pay the penalty."
Federal Matching Funds For CD Just Announced
SACRAMENTO — Harold G. Robinson, Director, today announced that the California Disaster Office assisted city and county defense organizations in obtaining approximately $475,258.70 in Federal matching fund assistance for procurement of civil defense equipment and for civil defense training during the first three - quarters of the current fiscal year.
Orange County received $25,073.95 in Federal financing to further its civil defense program during the period, Robinson said.
Federal contributions were made during the July-through - March period for purchase of such items as communications equipment to strengthen the local fire and police capability for civil defense; local warning systems and generators to supply electricity, heat and light to public buildings, civil defense control centers and hospitals; and training programs.
Under the Federal matching funds program, cities and counties contributed one - half of the total amount for these items.
Purpose of the program, authorized under the Federal Civil Defense Act of 1950, is to provide states and their political subdivisions with financial assistance by contributing one - half the cost of approved civil defense equipment, supplies, and some training activities.

Clear Plug With Bug Inside Good For Fishing
By JOE McDAVID
United Press International
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (UPI) — Aance remark gave Walter Anton the idea for a new fishing bag—a two-in-one lure he hopes attract both fishermen and fishers called "The Plug With the Bug." It is made of plastic—half colored and half clear. Encased in the ear plastic is a bug which seems wiggly invitingly as the plug loves through the water.
If the plug doesn't get 'em, the bug certainly should," said Anton, a husky former prize winner and one-time restaurant owner.
One day nearly three years ago, Anton was in a novelty shopping with a plastic "ice cube" containing what seemed to be an object. The idea was for practical users to drop the cube into a sink so the drinker would believe there was a bug in his ice. Anton recalled that a man watching him said, "Boy, if that did some hooks on it, I bet it could catch some fish."
That started me thinking," he said, "I realized I would have to come up with the right weight balance to get the right action in the latter."
Anton made a model and fitted it out.
The first time I used it I caught a six-pound bass," he said.
That convinced him. He scraped together $10,000, then started out find someone to make the molds and manufacture the plug for him.

Soap Opera Heroine Nixs Nighttime TV
"Search for Tomorrow," a CBS-TV daytime soap opera, tickled off its 2,000th telecast Friday, May 8, and actress Mary Stuart hopes to be around for at least that many more.
Miss Stuart, who is Mrs. Arthur Tate in the series and Mrs. Richard Krolik in private life, has played the starring role for the entire seven years and eight months of the show. During that time, she has had two babies in real life — Cynthia, now 3½, and Jeffrey, 2.
Miss Stuart has turned down offers for parts in nighttime TV and Broadway plays because she enjoys her daytime work too much.
"The hours are perfect," she explained. "I'm through early enough to do the housework."
