Make The Most Of Probabilities
Do you play with or against the probabilities? In some hands this is no problem; in others it is the most important factor.

You start the hand with eight tricks in top cards. How do you try for the ninth trick?
Should you finesse dummy's queen of diamonds, or should you play to develop an extra trick in spades or hearts?
As the hand stands you have no problem since you can play for everything. You can find out about the hearts and spades before you need to decide for or against the diamond finesse.
After winning the first trick with the ace of clubs, lead out all of dummy's top hearts. If the suit breaks 3-3, your last heart will be a sure winner.
As it happens, hearts break badly. The next step is to cash dummy's top spades and then lead a spade to your own queen. As it happens, the spades break 3-3. Hence dummy's last spade is a sure winner.
It would be foolish to jeopardize a sure contract. You lead a diamond to dummy's ace, refusing to finesse, and cash dummy's last spade. The contract is now home.
If the spades had broken badly, you would know about it on taking the queen of spades. Your only remaining chance would be the diamond finesse. It is quite all right to risk a finesse when everything else has already failed.
Make Slight Change
Make a slight change in the hand by giving dummy the queen of spades and giving South one of dummy's low spades. Now South wins the first trick with the ace of clubs and knows that he will never again have the lead in his hand. He must decide at once whether or not to take the diamond finesse.
The only alternative is to find a 3-3 spade split. South has an even chance to succeed with the diamond finesse.
Laguna Beach Woman 'Bags' Deer on Highway
THREE ARCH BAY (OCNS) — A Laguna Beach woman bagged a deer here Thursday evening — unintentionally that is.
Elaine L. Risheberger, 609 Cliff Dr., told Sheriff's Deputies that the animal crossed in front of her as she drove along Coast Highway. She stepped on her brakes but could not avoid hitting the animal. Its body was taken away by the Forestry Department.
In neighboring San Clemente, residents on the south side of town were a bit jittery after a rattle snake was reported. Police have not found the poisonous snake yet but neither has the snake found any San Clemente residents.
Bill to Allow Probe Of Vet Loans Gets Okay
SACRAMENTO (UPI)—A bill to allow the state to investigate finances of state veterans home applicants to insure that only needy vets are admitted was approved Thursday by the Senate Finance Committee.
Assemblyman Lester McMillan (D-Los Angeles), author of the bill, told the committee many veterans were in need of financial assistance and, "They are the ones this veterans' home program was set up to help."
He said the Department of Veterans Affairs presently could not check to see if only needy veterans were being admitted.

Republicans
Chosen By LBSC
Student Body
Students at Long Beach State College believe Richard Nixon and John Kennedy will be their party's choice in the 1960 presidential elections.
In a recent poll conducted by the LBSC Young Republicans, Nixon led Nelson Rockefeller (93-62), followed by Henry C. Lodge (23), Harold Stassen (15), and William Stratton (4).
Kennedy led the Democrat hopefuls with 99 first place selections, more than the combined total of Adlai Stevenson (38), Lyndon Johnson (26), and Hubert Humphrey (19).
State students also favored more spending for defense (128-88), the current U.S. stand on Berlin (189-52), scholarships for athletes (147-68), and a summit meeting between President Elsenhower and Mr. K. (157-61).
The LBSC student body is opposed (164-51) to a nuclear test ban, voted (141-72) against birth control as a check on expanding population, and turned thumbs down (120-96) on U.S. recognition of Red China.
Other items on the poll showed that Long Beach State students:
1. Think religion will be an issue in the next presidential election (128-88).
2. Favor shifting control of their school from the State Superintendent of Education to board of regents (137-63).
3. Are against their college paper being responsible to the LBSC administration (164-51).

Daily Question
Partner bids two notrump, and the next player passes. You hold: Spades 9 7 6 Hearts 10 7 Diamonds 10 9 8 Clubs K J 9 7 3. What do you say?
Answer: Bid three notrump. A bid of three clubs would ask partner to show a major suit. In this case you are interested only in game at notrump.

Buena Park Schools Get Federal Money
WASHINGTON (OCNS) — According to an announcement by Congressman James B. Utt, (R) of Orange County, Buena Park School District has been awarded the sum of $5,573.00 for school operating funds pursuant to public law 874.
Schools which are heavily burdened by the impact of federal installations in their area are eligible for financial assistance under the public law provision.
The amount certified for payment is determined from the tentative entitlement for the fiscal year computed on the basis of information and estimates contained in the application. The total entitlement for the Buena Park School District for the fiscal year 1959, has been set at $8,742.56, of which the above amount has been certified for immediate payment. Additional payments will be subject to such adjustments as may be required by actual data and be the availability of funds in relation to total entitlements for financial assistance.
HOLLYWOOD (UPI) — The millionaire movie magnate strode purposefully through his plush office, removed a life - sized picture of himself from behind his desk and prepared for an hour's work.
He removed his jacket and slid into his swivel chair dressed only in slacks and a T-shirt.
It was conference time. Two lieutenants sat formally in deep leather chairs before the high-powered company president. The scene would be ludicrous anyplace but in Hollywood.
The bigshot reached down and exploded the quiet afternoon air with a lengthy blast of a ship's horn attached to a crompressed-air container. He yelled, "It's war!" and fired a water pistol into the face of the nearest henchman, an impeccable dressed man of rotund proportions.
The wounded assistant leaped behind a chair and screamed, "You rat fink!" at his boss, who calmly squeezed the trigger again - this time hitting his target on the forehead.

Traffic Deaths Show Increase Over Last Year
First quarter traffic fatalities in the Southland increased 4 per cent over the same period last year, the Automobile Club of Southern California reported today.
Highway deaths in the 13 southern counties totaled 483, an increase of 19 from the 1958 first quarter toll of 404. Fatality decreases were recorded in only four counties: Imperial, Inyo, Kern and Los Angeles.
Pedestrians comprised approximately 28 per cent of the fatalities throughout the Southland, with 124 deaths in that category. This represents a 13 per cent decrease from the first three months of 1958 when 140 pedestrians were killed.
Orange County suffered a sharp 109 per cent increase in fatalities during January, February and March, with 46 deaths in traffic as compared with 22 during the similar period last year.
Pedestrian fatalities in Orange County also increased from two in the 1958 first quarter to six during the first three months of this year. For motorists, the most hazardous day appears to be Saturday, according to an analysis of county fatality statistics conducted by the Auto Club's Engineering Department. About 22 per cent of the fatal crashes occurred on that day. Thursdays were most dangerous for pedestrians.
Some 30 per cent of the fatal accidents occurred during the early morning hours, midnight to 2 a.m., and 72 per cent of the victims were males. All of the pedestrians killed in Orange County traffic during the first quarter were males.
Although the young driver group, age 18 to 23, accounted for 20 per cent of the deaths, they were followed closely by the 36 to 41 age

WOOD (UPI)—The miliev magnate strode pur-hough his plush office, life - sized picture of him behind his desk and on hour's work. He loved his jacket and sided rivel chair dressed only and a T-shirt.
Not reached down and the quiet afternoon airghy blast of a ship'shed to a crompressed-er. He yelled, "It's fired a water pistol of the nearest hench-mpeccable dressed man proportions.
Undated assistant leaped chair and screamed, link!" at his boss, who sneezed the trigger again hitting his target on end.
Remains Calm
No. 2 sat calmly swung open instantly. Two more underlings collided in their rush to accommodate the master.
"You've ruined my suit!" exclaimed one of the newcomers.
"So what," his partner said.
"It's an old one the boss gave you anyhow. Lemme see the label."
"Take your hands off me!" cried the first.
"Out! Get out!" the boss bel-owed as they beat a retreat.
"I can't stand all this con-fusion," bosso went on. "I need some music to steady my nerves."
With that the millionaire producer reached for a bottle of pills and turned on a record player, full volume. He then raced to a book shelf to set five miniature toy animal musicians clanking away.
"That's better," the executive exclaimed. "Restful.
Time For Refreshment
"How about some refreshment before we get down to business?" he asked his employees. Before they could answer he pushed a button and hollered into the office intercom. "Draw three beers!"
