Church News SECTION B Saturday, May 9, 1959 FATHER-SON Louis Zamperini To Be Speaker At Central Baptist Ranquet FATHER-SON Louis Zamperini To Be Speaker At Central Baptist Banquet Louis Zamperini, former Olympic track star and world’s champion miler, will be guest speaker for the second annual Father-Son banquet of the Central Baptist Men’s Club. The banquet will be held at 8745 Magnolia Ave., Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Vocal selections will be sung by Joe Ganzales of Anaheim and unison singing will be led by Dale Drummond. The war experiences of the noted speaker, (Captain Zamperini) were recognized by the U.S. Air Force Public Relations department as one of the best and most exciting stories to come out of World War II. During World War II, he was better known as the Army Air Force captain who crashed at sea and spent 47 days adrift on a small rubber raft. He was rescued from the sea by the Japanese, and subsequently spent two and one half years as a P.O.W. In a starving condition, he was, on occasion forced to run against well-fed Japanese runners. He was recognized as one of the 10 men who suffered most during World War II. Due to his disappearance, and consequently being officially declared dead, he now has an Air Field named in his honor, and an athletic event at Madison Square Garden, New York. Following the war, Zamperini returned to Japan to bring the Christian message to those who had inflicted atrocities upon him, even though he once vowed never to return to that country of unpleasant memories. Zamperini has been featured on Ralph Edwards’ N.B.C. “This Is Your Life” T.V. show. His currently popular book, “Devil at my Heels” was released by Dutton of New York, with a foreword by Billy Graham. During the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Zamperini almost touched off an international incident when he tore down the Swastika from Hitler’s Chancellery. While attending the University of Southern California, he broke the National Collegiate mile record which he held for 15 years. Now helping the younger generation, Lou Zamperini’s Victory Boys Camps is dedicated to delinquent and underprivileged boys. He says, “These boys are given a new chance for a better future by your gifts or free will offerings and would not enjoy this opportunity unless this support was forthcoming.
