The unusual and attractive aspects of Descanso Gardens are that such a place can be surrounded by a city and be so locally available. The property was dedicated by Manchester Boddy, former publisher of the Los Angeles Daily News, who is a leader among nature lovers in Southern California. The property was acquired by the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation to be operated much in the same manner set forth by Mr. Boddy. At one time in the history of Descanso Gardens, prospectors discovered gold on the slopes of the southern boundry. About the time the miners had extracted all the gold from the vein of ore Tebucio Vasquez, notorious early California bandit, arrived on the scene and divested them of their wealth. In the process he killed several of the miners and burned their cabin. The foundation of the cabin may still be seen today. Descanso Oaks Old The oaks at Descanso Gardens are estimated to be between 165 and 200 years of age. They are the offshoots of the stumps of much larger oaks, which are believed to have been destroyed by fire. Because each stump produced several offshoots and each of these had to fight the others for existence, the trees have taken on a twisted appearance making the particular stand unique among oak groves. Descanso Gardens is noted for its vast number of camellia and azalea plants which grow untended beneath the spreading oaks. The Motorlog Party borrowed a 1959 Opel for the short trip to La Canada and Descanso Gardens. Because of the distance involved, we didn't get much opportunity to test the complete roadability of the Opel, but the trip up the Santa Ana Freeway over the Pasadena Freeway and the driving through the winding streets of Glendale and La Canada proved the easy handling and extreme comfort of the Opel. Performance rendered by the Opel is such as one would expect from a car twice its size and the rich looking upholstery is keyed to blend accordingly with the individual color of the car. Probably one of the most unique rose gardens in the world is at Descanso Gardens. Under the leadership of Dr. Walter E. Lammerts, world famous rosarian and developer of the Chrysler Imperial Rose, the Descanso Gardens Rose display has been designed as a living museum showing the development of the rose from the earliest known plants. The plants are arranged in order of their historical appearance, beginning with the 13th Century and continuing through the Centuries to a display of the most modern prominent roses. Tram Service Available A new facility which Descanso Gardens has to offer is a tram which will transport many people on a mobile tour of the area, saving much walking. Descanso Gardens is open to the public from 10 am to 4 p.m. daily and sample parking.
