Methods of Using Bone Marrow in Cancer Research Studied
By DAVE NELSON
some years Dr. Elmer W. W. of the National Cancer Institute and Dr. L. O. Jacobson of the Biological Division of the Long Beach VA Hospital were working on the biochemical effects of bone on mice. They discovered they could protect mice against the lethal effects of the cry injecting them with bone now taken from other mice. This seemed surprising, it is known medical fact that and tissues cannot be successfully transferred from one to another or even between individual members of the same cancer. In this case mice, without recipient producing antibodies, reject the received material.
Clarify this, imagine that a bone has suffered a third degree to the face. Our first thought be to remove skim from an person, a donor, and graft it into the burned area. While this be done with the cornea of which is dead matter, the living material and will not be skin may be removed one portion of the burn vicinately and grafted onto the where it will take and grow. Name is true of bone marrow. Then were the mice able to test foreign marrow?
Destigation disclosed that the extent of X-Ray given the mice destroys their cancer was also intent to destroy those cells reable for the production of anticancer agents. It was therefore possible to the transference from one to the other without a sub-
ample of such work was that done by two biologists, Polge and Parks, in preserving and storing bull semen for later use in artificial insemination. The two men had worked out the ideal conditions for freezing bull semen and then storing it in a dry ice machine to be used whenever the need should arise.
Dr. Kurnick, working on a grant from the U.S. Public Health Service, removed bone marrow from four of his veteran volunteers at the Long Beach VA Hospital by injecting a needle into the illium bone of the pelvis, a process very similar to a spinal tap. The men chosen for the experiment were victims of incurably advanced cancers. Short of a miracle there was no chance that the men would recover. They were doomed and had nothing to lose. They might benefit.
Marrow Removed
When the bone marrow had been removed — approximately 3 billion cells from each patient (and each cell must be counted beneath a microscope) — it was slow-frozen in a machine which employs a thermostatic control in conjunction with a time clock. The temperature is lowered one degree minute until the material has reached a temperature of 79 degrees-below zero centigrade. It was then placed in the dry-ice storage machine in readiness for the day when the X-Rays would burn into the implacable cancer — as well as the delicate bone marrow;
It was known that the radiation treatment would be much more intense than the usually applied dosage, and that possibly the men would not survive the injury which was sure to result to the delicate needles. The needles were inserted intravenously, and the rich red fluid pressed into the men's blood streams.
The rest is now medical history. Within one to four weeks, the blood counts returned to normal and the injured bone marrow was producing normal blood again.
What might appear as a tragic aftermath was the subsequent deaths of the four volunteers. But that was expected; no one doubted it.
The experiment was a success, however, for now the Dr. has discovered a new weapon in the fight against cancer. The importance of the experiment lies in the fact that Drs. now have an "insurance policy" in treating their afflicted patients. As Dr. Kurnick explained walker who without a parachute would be loathe to attempt many of the more death defying feats. He would naturally be more strained in his actions. While wearing a parachute, however, he would feel free to take risks which would ordinarily break him up with fear. The same applies to radiation treatment now. It is now possible to give much heavier and more frequent doses of X-Ray, and if they should result in what otherwise would be a serious damage to the life-essential marrow, the patient's stored marrow is on hand to inject.
Will Rise
Because of this, Dr. Kurnick has predicted that the incidence of cancer cures will rise appreciably in the very near future. More advanced cases will be open to help and hope which previously was not forthcoming.
forts at cure. An uncondition fatal disease, in its acute form is a pronounced multiplication of the white blood cells, and although it responds in a limited degree radioactive treatment, never such an extent that the victim life is finally save. Acute Leukemia patients are kept alive through constant transfusions of her blood, a process which obviates cannot go on indefinitely.
Leukemics are subject to Drs. call “remission.” A remission is a false recovery, a temporary turn to normal and his bone row becomes "normal look again." The condition may last a few weeks to mahy months eventually the condition rests and the patient never makes ress again.
Dr. Kurnick's revolutionaryry — and he cautions that theory — is that if the agent which made the bone row abnormal is no longer active, then the "normal low marrow of the remission may be removed and stored at time of relapse. When that comes Dr. Kurnick says, "His hard enough (with X-Ray) to out the leukemia completely inject the marrow."
Will it work? The answer course, lies in the future. Dr Kurnick and his staff are preparing this normal looking row of the remission period for the time to come when will be able to test their results.
"We have a great deal to say," that is obvious. Lapsed leukemia patient has two weeks to live. If our ment works, he will have gone.

Investigation disclosed that the extent of X-Ray given the mice destroy their cancer was also evident to destroy those cells reable for the production of anti-viral agents. It was therefore possible to transferance from one patient to the other without a subsequent rejection.
The question naturally arises, could not the same technique used with human beings? The answer is simple. The amount of dry required to kill the antibiocells in a human being is also sufficient to kill the person infected. The impracticality of such operation may be readily seen that then, could be done?

Embezzlement Plot Told
SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) —Federal and state authorities have revealed further details of a gigantic embezzlement plot —which led to the suicide of a Long Beach banker —indicating nearly four million dollars might be involved.
Wealthy Saul Rafael manufacturer John Hendrickson, 40, walked to freedom Tuesday on $50,000 bail despite protests from the U. S. attorneys office that he was so deeply implicated in the conspiracy "there is a possibility of flight."
Ball for Hendrickson was originally set at $100,000, but U. S. Commissioner Joseph Karesh reduced the amount following a preliminary hearing. Hendrickson is charged specifically with conspiring to embezzle $20,000.
U. S. Attorney Donald B. Constine fought to keep the ball high and disclosed that Hendrickson was named as the recipient of the money in a note left by George B. Hewlett, an officer in the Long Beach National Bank who shot himself last Friday.
In the note, Hewlett stated that total embezzlement came to $3,714,710.96 and that Hendrickson got all of it, according to Constine.
As added evidence, Constine disclosed that FBI agents found a total of 155 checks in Hewlett's garage, totaling $1,765,856, and all made out to Hendrickson.
