Former President to Observe 75th Birthday INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (UPI)—Former President Truman turns a springy 75 years of age next Friday. The man from Missouri, who acts liveller than a lot of people half his age, will be honored by the nation for what he has done but he characteristically insists on looking ahead rather than backward. "A statesman is a dead politician," he says. "I'm still a politician and intend to remain one." Truman is a little heavier at 75 than during his White House days but he gets at least as much exercise now as he did then and possibly more. He looks firm and healthy and, as New York newsmen who accompany him on his morning constitutional when he visits the city will attest, he still sets a breathtaking pace. Wherever he is, Truman's life is a well regulated one. He takes a daily walk, retires early and rises early. DR. Much of his time I taken up with the mountains or correspondence he receives. The former president lives wit his wife, Beas, in an old-fasioned two-story frame home. He says 'a soldier doesn't deserve any medals for doing his duty.' He plans on many more birthlays. JAR DAY'S A SPECIAL DAY AT 8662 South 625 Or Compounds Aid Bacteria In 'Floating in Air' BY DELOS SMITH API Science Editor YORK (UPI)—At least a the chemical compounds reserve people against the tits of sickening bacteria bacteria maintain them a state of suspended animation while floating air. J. Webb discovered this, ected that airborne bacis one reason for the continue increase in bacterial inn hospital patients and personnel in this age of the mighty bacteria - killers, the antibiotics and the sulfa drugs. But how could this be when air usually dries out bacteria in short order and thus kills them? His experiments showed it could be very readily — with one member of the notorious staphylococal family of people-sickening bacteria. In the cells of the bacteria, the proteins are bonded with water. Air takes out the water, the protein structure collapses, and the bacteria are finished. But the antiobiotic chloramphenicol and some of the sulfa drugs substitute for water in this bonding. Air doesn't eliminate them nearly as fast it eliminates water. Meanwhile the bacteria remain in the air, unable to multiply but with their cellular protein structure intact. They get into a human body again and find moisture which dilutes and replaces the antiobiotic or sulfa drug. They begin multiplying — they're in business again.
