The property sought in the six condemnation suits is located east of Anaheim and follows a course along the Santa Ana river near Taylor St., past Imperial, and curving up to Esperanza Rd. Named as defendants in the six cases are George A. Collman, Meryl F. Collman, August and Regina Bieger, Joe L. Young, Walter and Alfred Kraemer, Braford Bros., Mabel Yorba, the Federal Bank of Berkeley, and others. Liquor Peddling Probe Delayed for Anaheimer SANTA ANA (OCNS) — Arrangement here of Paula Colt, an Anaheim cocktail waitress, on a federal charge of illegally selling liquor was continued here Tuesday until 10 a.m. May 19. Southeast United By DELOS SMITH * UPI Science Editor NEW YORK (UPI) — Unless stern measures are taken, warns a highly informed scientist, most of the southeast United States are going to be occupied by invading foreigners who have the capacity of supporting ten million of their individuals on one acre of land. When they get up to that density per acre, there's little food left for anyone else, and what's more, added Dr. Edward O. Wilson, associate professor of entomology of Harvard University, these invaders could do no less well for themselves in California. Wil-ciate professor of ento-of Harvard University, leaders could do no less themselves in California. At the rest of the country was safe because of climates distasteful to the invaders. Wilson was speaking of ants, but what ants! These South American fire-ants are "exploding populations" in Texas, Louisiana Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina. And all this came from a tiny and insignificant-looking beachhead in Mobile, Alabama, which was first noticed around 1910! Eat Anything These ants eat anything, animal or vegetable, and they're ferocious about it. Wilson noted that they have consumed pigs, calves, and whole broods of chicks. Disturb a nest, which Wilson estimated could contain up to 250,000 individuals, and ants swam out in dense packs eager to attack. Some Southern farm workers refuse to work in fields infested with nests. Yet the sting is much less fiery than that of the bee, Wilson said. Th danger is in being stung by many ants all at once. At least two children have died of fire-ant venom because they happened to be especially sensitive to it. This ability of the ants to assemble in masses in a flash for defense or attack on their prey, makes these pests different from other ants. Wilson said science had much to learn about what causes imported life to "explode" in a new environment. One obvious reason of course is that it leaves behind its natural enemies and competitors. In South America, this wriety of fire-ant isn't numerous enough to be considered much like a pest. Multiplication Rate Increasing Nor was it much of a pest Mobile through the 20's and into the 30's. Then something happened which caused it to "explode." Wilson suggested a change in evolution brought about in the animals made it ideally suited to thrive in the South. At any rate, it has been thriving ever since and Wilson was positive the "explosion in multiplication rate was not only continuing but was also "celebrating." He believed the ants had reached the borders of their possible range in this country. DAM RUBBER CUSHION SPECIAL ANNIVERSARY SALE PRICE. But unless a strict quarantine is established, they will be carried by motor traffic from the present western limit in Texas to California, which has climates it would like. Wilson has been a scientific investigator of the ant since 1949 and is considered an authority. He summed up entomology's present knowledge, which, he said, has a number of holes, in an organ of the American Museum of Natural History. The first message by telegraph — Samuel F. B. Morse's immortal "What Hath God Wrought!" — was transmitted on May 24, 1854, from the Supreme Court, room of the U.S. Capitol.
