For Helping 'Buddy' Escape
By Orange County News Service
A man who aided in an escape of a "buddy" from Santa Ana police last Friday night has been sentenced to 120 days in the county jail for petty theft and malicious mischief.
Specifically, Jack L. Reece, 21, of Sacramento, was accused of stealing a pair of handcuffs and kicking out a squad car window.
Slightly embarrassed police arrested the man after he aided John Francis Johnson, 21, of 1031 N. Rose St., Santa Ana, escape from the Santa Ana Police Station. Johnson reportedly fled the station while still handcuffed to a chair but was apprehended after a high speed chase.
Johnson had been arrested as a suspect in an assault and battery charge and Resce and another man had accompanied the group to the station.
Johnson reportedly broke the chair and jumped into Reece's ear. Reece, who also had bolted out of the station at the same time, joined his friend.
After a fast chase, the suspects were stopped on West 17th St.
This time both Johnson and Reece, later found to be an ex-capee from Pine Grove Camp near Sacramento, were handcuffed. Both reportedly became belligerent on the way to the station, kicking out the rear window of the police car.

SUPREME Court Splits on Labor Leading Ruling
WASHINGTON (UPI)—The Supreme Court, splitting 5-4, ruled today that a labor leader who disputes union welfare funds to his use cannot be punished under Taft-Hartley law unless bribery and extortion are involved.
The court overturned the conviction of Puerto Rico labor official Aldelmiro Arroyo. It held that such misuse of funds should be prosecuted under local criminal law, not the federal labor statute.
The government had charged at Arroyo, a local president, received two $7,500 checks from two sugar firms in 1953, properly deceived them in the union's welfare fund bank account, but then drew out some of the money for his own use. Government prosecutors accused him of violating Taft-Hartley through "larceny by trick."
In other actions today, the court:
—Declined to grant a hearing to three Negro doctors who have been trying to obtain permission to practice at James Walter Memorial Hospital in Wilmington, N.C. Lower courts had held the hospital was a private rather than a city operation, therefore not subject to constitutional rulings on the integration question. The Supreme Court left this order in effect.
—Decided, again 5-4, that a city health inspector does not have to obtain a warrant from a magistrate before he can enter a private home to carry out his duties. The case came to the court from Aaron D. Frank, Baltimore, who denied a city inspector admission to his home.
